Modoc National Wildlife Refuge ☼ Alturas, California
Out of all the wildlife refuges I've been to in northern California, Modoc National Wildlife Refuge is my personal favorite. This gorgeous spot in remote Alturas has 360 degree views and hardly anyone around to distract you from getting your nature vibes.
There is a walking trail, viewing blind, a 3 mile auto tour route, and the Visitor Center is shiny and new after being rebuilt after a fire in 2015. The staff is very friendly and helpful.
During our visit, we spotted Northern Shrike, American Kestrel, Northern Harrier, Black-necked Stilt, Sandhill Cranes, Cinnamon Teal, Marsh Wrens, among dozens of other birds.

SUMMARY
=======
Modoc National Wildlife Refuge is a National Wildlife Refuge of the United States located in northeastern California. It is next to the South Fork of the Pit River in Modoc County, southeast of Alturas. The area was first claimed by the Dorris Family in 1870 under the first of the federal Homestead Acts. The family developed a livestock ranch and built a reservoir. The first 5,360 acres were purchased from the family in 1960 to establish the refuge. Over the years more territory was purchased from several landowners, and today the refuge covers over 7,000 acres. The refuge is located about 60 miles outside the Klamath Basin. It is on the western edge of the Great Basin and includes many types of habitat, such as seasonal and semi-permanent wetlands, wet meadows, riparian zones, sagebrush steppe, reservoir, and cropland. It is a staging area and wetland breeding habitat for migratory birds of the Pacific Flyway, such as waterfowl and the sandhill crane. More than 250 species of birds have been recorded on the refuge. The functions of the refuge include preservation and conservation of habitat and flora and fauna, and recreation and public services such as hunting, fishing, boating, hiking, wildlife observation and photography, and education.Management activities in the local habitat include grazing and crop cultivation, prescribed burning, and water manipulation. The wetlands are stewarded to provide healthy vegetation for the use of resident and visiting birds.

Postcard From Modoc National Wildlife Refuge
In the extreme northeast area of California there is an oasis for wildlife in the high desert. Fed by the Pit River watershed is a wide valley of wet meadows, ponds and fields. This is one summer home of California's Greater Sandhill Cranes. It is a protected area managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service known as the Modoc National Wildlife Refuge. The Greater Sandhill Cranes
of California Central Valley migrate north in the spring to return to their traditional nesting territories. Mated pairs claim their summer turf year after year to breed and raise their young. In the fall they bring their young back to the
Central Valley to spend the winter in the wetlands and surrounding fields that have been their homes for thousands of years.
This video / photographic / audio essay is a glimpse of the Crane's spring and summer home and the vibrant community of creatures that bring the wetlands
to life. It is inspired by the volunteer work of Save Our Sandhill Cranes and made possible by the dedicated staff of the Refuge. The value of maintaining, protecting and promoting wetlands can not be over stated. It is critical that
this important habitat be honored and allowed to flourish.

How to Find the Land:
To best help you find the property and any of the boundary line corners, copy and paste any of these GPS coordinates into Google Maps on your computer or smartphone with your GPS turned on:
Northeast Corner: 41.40473, -120.63519
Northwest Corner: 41.40473, -120.63573
Southwest Corner: 41.40331, -120.63573
Southeast Corner: 41.40331, -120.63518
For example: copy and paste “41.40331, -120.63518” (with the comma and the dash) into the search bar in Google Maps to find the exact location. We recommend this method as the best way to locate the property because the land will be unmarked with no signs or survey stakes.

134-Manzanar Relocation Center, Owens Valley CA
Manzanar is most widely known as the site of one of ten camps where over 110,000 Japanese Americans were incarcerated during World War II. Located at the foot of the Sierra Nevada in California's Owens Valley between the towns of Lone Pine to the south and Independence to the north, it is approximately 230 miles northeast of Los Angeles. Manzanar (which means apple orchard in Spanish) was identified by the United States National Park Service as the best-preserved of the former camp sites, and is now the Manzanar National Historic Site, which preserves and interprets the legacy of Japanese American incarceration in the United States.

Citius. Alturas. Fortius. The Olympic motto could well apply to this little Via Destinatum that takes you fast and high into the paralympic Warner Mountains and then finishes strong with a sweeping descent down to the quiet, quaint village of Cedarville in the Surprise Valley, close by the Nevada border. It may be a couple of miles short of a marathon but it will still appeal to some competitors. Modern bi-wheeled athletes will find it a little narrower, rougher and not too curvy when they cross-country the portions where CR 56 skirts the edge of the Modoc National Wildlife Refuge and CR 58 bisects a sloped foothill plain. But the Hwy 299 sprint track has moderate, sweeping Twistius and better Pavementus that allows you to ride faster, higher and stronger while striving for a personal best. Just remember: this is a state sanctioned venue, so you do have to watch for those pesky Accelero Tributum Exactors eager to javelin a ticket into you. If they do, take heart from your own motto: Illegitimus non carborundum.
Lower Klamath Wildlife Refuge February 12-15, 2018
A small portion of my experience during my fantastic adventure to the Klamath Valley near Klamath Falls, Oregon and into Northern California during February 12th - 15th 2018.Just amazing beauty everywhere I looked, and Eagles, lots of Eagles. From December through February the area is a hotspot for Raptors due to the multitudes of migrating waterfowl that settle in the valley temporarily, providing a plentiful feast for birds of prey.It is one of the largest concentrations of eagles in the lower 48 states.I was there mostly to try to improve my photography skills, but managed to grab a few chances to pull out my G85 and get some video. Not real pleased with the quality here, but I think it tells a story worth sharing.Saw close to 100 Eagles of all ages each day I was there, from dawn to dusk, as well as all kinds of hawks.Needless to say I was in Paradise.Hope you find some enjoyment here. Thanks for watching.
