Walking Around Kinmen's Jincheng (Kinmen, Taiwan)
Jincheng Township / 金城鎮 is an urban township on the southwestern corner of the island of Kinmen (Quemoy) and is the county seat of Kinmen County.
The town contains Jicheng Old Street for food and Mofan Street / 模範街 which means Model Street - its name comes from the uniform hybrid architecture of Chinese and Western styles. The construction of the street started in 1924 when the President of Kinmen Junior Chamber Fu His-chi held a fundraising drive among overseas Chinese. The street was completed in 1925. The 75 meter long street features buildings with brick exteriors and arched door fronts modeled after the Japanese, Fujian and Western architecture. There are 16 buildings at each side connected by a common arcade.
The Kinmen Military Headquarters of Qing Dynasty / 清金門鎮總兵署 is also a museum in Jincheng Township. The building was originally built as a study place for a scholar during the Ming Dynasty under the name Cong Qing Xuan. It was then transformed into the Kinmen Military Headquarters of Qing Dynasty during the rule of the Kangxi Emperor when Commander of Kinmen relocated his office from Jinmencheng to Jincheng due to a situation change and loss of population in Jinmencheng.
After the establishment of the Republic of China in 1912, the office building had been used for several different purposes, from Kinmen County Government, Defense Headquarter, Fujian Provincial Government and Kinmen Political Committee during the Taiwan Strait Crisis. In 1995, the Kinmen County Police Department and Tentative County Assembly were relocated to other place.
The building is a four-section house with three courtyards in between. The front courtyard spans over a wide area with a Leafy Banyan trees. At the back lies the centuries-old ceiba tree.
Making Maestro Wu Bombshell Steel Knives (Kinmen, Taiwan)
Making Maestro Wu Bombshell Steel Knives / 金合利鋼刀 金寧廠 at the main factory / store. Maestro Wu's grandfather started the tradition of using bombshell steel in the early days of WWII, where the small (now) Taiwanese island of Kinmen had little steel for the production of knives and tools. He combed the beach in search of shrapnel, using it to forge high quality knives and tools with the forge that he carried on his back from village to village. On August 23, 1958, the Second Taiwan Straight Crisis started, with Mainland Chinese troops bombarding Kinmen for 2 weeks straight with over 400,000 shells. Taiwan retained control of the island, and for the next 18 years, propaganda shells were fired every other day. There was an estimated 1 million shells in all that were used, with the majority of them unexploded. Ironically, this has provided the very materials which have lasted well into its third generation of Maestro Wu knife making.
A blacksmith in Kinmen generally produces 60 cleavers or Kinmen knifes / 金門菜刀 from one artillery shell and tourists often purchase Kinmen knives as souvenirs together with other local specialties.

Kinmen
Kinmen or Quemoy is a small archipelago of several islands of Taiwan including Great Kinmen, Lesser Kinmen, and some islets. Administratively, it is Kinmen County of the streamlined Fujian Province, Taiwan. The county is also claimed by the People's Republic of China as part of its own Fujian Province's Quanzhou Prefecture. It is geographically very near Xiamen, no more than 2 kilometres. Some islands of other counties, such as Wuqiu, were transferred to the jurisdiction of Kinmen County by the ROC government following its defeat in the Chinese Civil War and retreat to Taiwan. Matsu is the other set of islands on the Fujian coast controlled by the Republic of China.
