I have shot the video during a vacation in California in 1996. (Still on VHS tape)
L.A to Bakersfield On U.S. Route 99 with Ridge Route High Speed
This is the original drive from Los Angeles to Bakersfield via the Historical U.S. Route 99 with the Ridge Route included. If you had to drive anywhere from Calexico to Canada on the west coast during the years of about 1915 to 1932, this is likely the route you would have taken. After 1933, the Ridge Route was bypassed by the U.S. Route 99 Alternate, which used Piru Canyon and went through current day Pyramid Lake.
This drive starts near the north end of the Arroyo Seco Parkway, north of the tunnels, at Figueroa and 26th Streets. The U.S. Route 99 then turned northeast onto San Fernando Blvd all the way up to Newhall. On the way up, through the City of Burbank, I had to jump a couple of obstacles using dissolves. The first is Burbank's Village Center Mall, which was built directly on top of old U.S. Route 99, making the alignment no longer passable. Second, I had to jump over the Interstate 5 Freeway from San Fernando Road from Grismer Avenue to San Fernando Road and Empire Ave on the other side of the Interstate. There was once a long existing tunnel there, but construction was going on while I did this video.
We then drive Sierra Highway to Newhall Road, then to Railroad Avenue to what is now Magic Mountain Parkway. As we approach the Old Road, we jump past it for a moment onto Feedmill Road, which was the old alignment before the bridge over the Santa Clarita River was washed out by the collapse and subsequent raging flood caused by the San Francisquito Dam collapse up on San Francisquito Canyon and washed things and bodies all the way to the Pacific Ocean, and even to San Diego.
We then jump on the Old Road as a sort of proxy for the old alignment, which is really under the Interstate 5 easement. We then jump over Interstate 5 and hook into Ridge Route Road. Please see my video description for Ridge Route Road for more information.
After passing over the glorious Ridge Route and arriving at the town of Grapevine, we continue on northward through Lebec, do a quick running jaunt on Dead Man's Curve (I felt because of my rinky-dink handling of the video while running, 12th Street Rag was appropriate). We then head north on Interstate 5, with another quick run on the last remaining part of the old Ridge Route, which sits between the northbound and southbound lands of I-5. Then back on I-5, which covers the old U.S. Route 99 alignment until we split off just past Wheeler Ridge on the original road on Union Avenue north to Bakersfield. Once in Bakersfield, one notices all of the old, run down hotels that once were actively dotted along the old U.S. Route 99 up to what is now signed as Route 204, which bears left and carries us over the Kern River and we then join the current Highway 99. Like San Fernando Blvd in Los Angeles, the old 99 went through an older part of Bakersfield east of the current 99. The newer parts of the city mostly lie to the west of the current 99 freeway.
For more information:
PLEASE NOTE: If you have the SLIGHTEST interest in the Ridge Route, you MUST read Harrison Irving Scott's Book, The Ridge Route: The Road That United California. He wrote the most comprehensive and most fascinating book on this historical road. Many of the facts, and the reason I knew where to look for things, are because of Mr. Scott's great research and written efforts. He is the go-to person for information on the route.
With the exception of 12th Street Rag, by Johnny Maddox from his album, Red Hot Ragtime, published by Crazy Otto Music, Inc., ©2000, all other piano tunes are from Autumn 20th Anniversary Edition album © 2001 Composer: George Winston, Label/Publisher: RCA Victor. There is also some incidental classic country music from XM Radio as well 100% speed playback moments. I do not claim any ownership to any of the music.

EXPLORING THE GREAT CINDER CONE ARRAY / MOJAVE DESERT
Go south across the freeway bridge in beautiful downtown Baker California. head towards the Kelso whistle Stop. At the 19 (Give or Take) mile mark, bang a left on the trail that you'll see there. You will be in the cinder cone area within minutes. As many as thirty of these giants await you. Cinder cones are different then volcano's in that the lava spews out of the base of the mountain. This trail will lead you all the way to Interstate 15 about 50 miles out of Lost Wages. The trail itself was 20 miles long, I believe. No airing down or trail bosses needed, unless of course you can't live without them. Two giant cinder mines are back here in which this is one of them. Also, the largest concentration of Joshua trees in the world are here along this trail. If Joshua's are your thing this is the place.

Mojave Desert, Afton Canyon trains and bridges
A visit to Afton Canyon of the Mojave Desert outside Barstow, CA. The canyon is the current route of the Union Pacific Railroad and historically was the route of the old Mojave Road that was used in wagon train days for crossing the desert from the Colorado River to Barstow. Today the access is by hiking or 4x4 vehicle with care needed when crossing a deep section of water at the West end of the route. Filmed with DJI Mavic 2 Pro and iphone.

Route 66 - the Mojave Experience
Hello, my name is Kevin Wong, and I am creating a book that is a collection of stories and candid portraits of people who live on and/or near Route 66 as it passes through the Mojave Desert. I will record the images of the people who have settled there to live or to work and the passing tourists who revel in the cultural icon that is Route 66.
Route 66 once saw its share of the many migrations of the American people until the modern interstate was built in the early 70's. Now the remaining populations along this 150 mile road through the Mojave Desert, which include Ludlow, Amboy, Cadiz, Chambless, Goffs, Fenner and Needles, are relics of the most famous road in American history.
I will establish myself in each of these remote locations during the project where I will offer to photograph and record stories about life on the Mother Road (term coined by John Steinbeck). Sign boards will be placed along the highway, in both directions, advertising the project's goals in the form of a Burma Shave limerick to attract the storytellers:
(first sign) The Desert is Hard / It's Lonely and Desolate (second sign) Tell Me Your Story / For a Free Portrait (third sign) 1 Mile Ahead
Please share with me a cool jingle and I'd love to post it on Route 66! Remember, it must fit on three sign boards that will be carried in my van and that the objective of the signs is to encourage travelers to consider stopping to participate in the storytelling/portrait sessions.
Now, the goal of this project is to raise $3000 in 25 days to cover the expenses of funding a traveling, gypsy-like, photo/recording studio along with a major publicity campaign to attract attention for the project, and printing of books. I appreciate any amount you can contribute, and every single dollar means a lot. Plus, I have some really cool rewards!
The whole process is going to be really fun, too. Whatever the level of support gets you behind-the-scenes access, and I'm going to share stories, photos, observations, and questions as I travel down Route 66.
My deadline for conducting interviews and photographs is October 31st. I'll finish design and layout of the book in two weeks after that, then get it printed and send it your way.
So, get in, sit down, strap on the seat belt, and get your kicks on Route 66.

SUMMARY
=======
The Mojave Desert ( mo-HAH-vee) is an arid rain-shadow desert and the driest desert in North America. It is in the southwestern United States, primarily within southeastern California and southern Nevada, and it occupies 47,877 sq mi (124,000 km2). Very small areas also extend into Utah and Arizona. Its boundaries are generally noted by the presence of Joshua trees, which are native only to the Mojave Desert and are considered an indicator species, and it is believed to support an additional 1,750 to 2,000 species of plants. The central part of the desert is sparsely populated, while its peripheries support large communities such as Las Vegas, Barstow, Lancaster, Palmdale, Victorville, and St. George.
The Mojave Desert is bordered by the Great Basin Desert to its north and the Sonoran Desert to its south and east. Topographical boundaries include the Tehachapi Mountains to the west, and the San Gabriel Mountains and San Bernardino Mountains to the south. The mountain boundaries are distinct because they are outlined by the two largest faults in California – the San Andreas and Garlock faults. The Mojave Desert displays typical basin and range topography. Higher elevations above 2,000 ft (610 m)) in the Mojave are commonly referred to as the High Desert; however, Death Valley is the lowest elevation in North America at 280 ft (85 m) below sea level and is one of the Mojave Desert's more notorious places. The Mojave Desert occupies less than 50,000 sq mi (130,000 km2), making it the smallest of the North American deserts. The Mojave Desert is often referred to as the high desert, in contrast to the low desert, the Sonoran Desert to the south. However, the Mojave Desert is generally lower than the Great Basin Desert to the north. The spelling Mojave originates from the Spanish language while the spelling Mohave comes from modern English. Both are used today, although the Mojave Tribal Nation officially uses the spelling Mojave; the word is a shortened form of Hamakhaave, their endonym in their native language, which means 'beside the water'.
