Monarch Sanctuary, Pacific Grove, California
Taking a break from crafting to share a video clip of a lovely afternoon I had at the Pacific Grove Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary. The weather was gorgeous and the Monarchs were fluttering all around. If you are ever in the Monterey, CA area between November and February take some time to visit this beautiful gem on California's Central Coast.
Monarch Butterflies at Pacific Grove, California
Pacific Grove is a coastal city in Monterey Co., California. It is known as Butterfly Town U.S.A since it is a western wintering site for migrating Monarch butterflies. From October until early March of the following year, Monarch butterflies cluster in semi-hibernation on the branches of Monterey pines and eucalyptus trees, especially in the Monarch Grove Sanctuary mini-park of Pacific Grove.
The migrating generation of Monarch butterflies that arrive in Pacific Grove in the late autumn do not mate until the following mid-February, and then leave northwards to the Sierras and onwards, and also northeast to the Rocky Mountains. Along the way, successive broods of female butterflies lay eggs on Milkweed plants, and in this way create four to five generations of butterflies before shorter daylight hours trigger a final southward migration back to coastal California.

Overwintering Monarch butterflies at Pacific Grove, California
The video was shot at Monarch Grove Sanctuary, Pacific Grove, Monterey, California on January 2016.
These butterflies fly from far as Canada to California and central Mexican fir forest.
Monarch butterflies are the only insect that migrate to a warmer climate that is 2,500 miles away each year.
They cluster together to stay warm. Tens of thousands of monarchs can cluster on a single tree.
An amazing view. Best time to see Monarch clusters, larvae in California is October, November and they hang around till mid February.
#PlantMilkweed and #SaveTheMonarch, as their population has reduced drastically in the last 20 years in eastern US.

Monterey, California
The City of Monterey in Monterey County is located on the southern edge of Monterey Bay, on Central California's Pacific coast. It stands at an elevation of 26 feet (8 m) above sea level,[2] on a land area of 8.466 sq mi (21.927 km²). The 2010 census recorded a population of 27,810.
Monterey was the capital of Alta California under both Spain and Mexico. It was the only port of entry for taxable goods in California. In 1846 the U.S. flag was raised over the Customs House, and California became part of the United States after the ensuing Mexican-American War.
The city had California's first theatre, public building, public library, publicly funded school, printing press, and newspaper. The city and surrounding area have attracted artists since the late 19th century and many celebrated painters and writers have lived there. Until the 1950s, there was an abundant fishery.
Among Monterey's notable present-day attractions are the Monterey Bay Aquarium, Cannery Row, Fisherman's Wharf and the annual Monterey Jazz Festival.

Monarch Habitat Pacific Grove, CA 2012.mp4
March 2, 2012 This small out of the way haven for Monarchs was a highlight of our trip for me. Monarchs flittering all around you and hanging on Monterey Pines like ornaments. Then, thanks to the advice of one woman who volunteers from time to time told us where to see the large clusters hanging. They are so well camouflaged. It's not touristy at all!! Nothing being sold here, just like a neighborhood back yard. Somehow the community has managed NOT to capitalize on these lovelies.
Pacific Grove
Pacific Grove, California is one of the most beautiful places to live. As America’s last hometown we celebrate “PG” for it’s charm, classic landscapes, coastal access, historical architecture and naturally for it’s legacy as a monarch sanctuary. This short film features the lifestyle of locals in the community and the places we love; like our local organic restaurants and historical sites such as the Point Pinos Lighthouse. Outdoor adventures on the recreational bike path right along the Pacific Ocean, yoga, picnicking, tide pooling and gathering as a community to enjoy music and healthy food. Pacific Grove is a refuge for rejuvenation, offering lovely beaches for surfing and children including Lover’s Point and Asilomar state beach, all apart of the incredible Monterey Bay Sanctuary and just minutes down the path from worldwide renowned Monterey Bay Aquarium. Wild ocean life such as otters, whales, and seals can be seen right from the shoreline that circumnavigates the Monterey Peninsula. Our Certified Farmers Market offers organic produce from Salinas Valley and Santa Cruz County. We feel blessed to live in such a beautiful community on the California Coast and celebrate this sweet hometown video with original song by native musician Josh Hollinger, directed by Michelle Magdalena Photography and shot and edited by Christopher Johnson.
