Elephants in Cambodia! I LOVED Mondulkiri
After Kratie, we drove to Sen Monorom in Mondulkiri, Cambodia, which is maybe the most well-known area in eastern Cambodia, famous for elephants and trekking, although very small. We stayed in the cutest hotel in Sen Monorum called the Indigenous People Lodge, owned by a Bunong woman, and also went to an elephant sanctuary called The Elephant Valley Project. This was my favorite stop on our trip!

What to do in Cambodia:
Mondulkiri ELEPHANT Project
The elephant sanctuary in Mondulkiri has definitely been my favourite place in Cambodia, we got to spend the whole day with rescued elephants. The charity are friendly people and they rely on tourism to keep their non profit organisation going. If you are ever in Cambodia I suggest this place should be first on your list, I’ve linked their website below so you can see more information about them.
Don't forget to hit that like button and subscribe for more awesome adventures.
Until next time, happy travels.

Based at the nature lodge animal sanctuary which trains local people in ecotourism skills such as hotel work, cooking, English, organic farms and livestock ranching, we joined our tour guide Prek to explore the Pnong hill tribe homeland where we could walk and bathe with elephants in the valleys below the Ho Chi Minh trail.
Mondulkiri Elephants - Mondulkiri Elephant & Wildlife Sanctuary by L.E.A.F Cambodia
The Mondulkiri Elephant & Wildlife Sanctuary is a developing ethical and sustainable eco-tourism project situated in Sen Monorom, Mondulkiri in the Kingdom of Cambodia. The project is a joint initiative between the Bunong hill tribe, locals and L.E.A.F, a local non-profit organization that works towards wildlife conservation through ethical elephant tours and community-based eco-tourism projects.
The Mondulkiri Elephant & Wildlife Sanctuary currently sponsors the release and care of six (6) ex-working Cambodian elephants that are negotiated to free them from logging work, commercial tourist rides and heavy farm work. The elephants at the sanctuary are given the opportunity to have a safe and peaceful home and the chance to socialize and roam around the jungles with other elephants – allowing these gentle giants live freely in their natural habitat.
HIKING WITH ELEPHANTS (ETHICALLY)!: Elephant Valley Project, Cambodia!
Seeing elephants in an ethical way can be difficult, but we found a wonderful sanctuary outside of Senmonorom, Mondulkiri, Cambodia. It's The Elephant Valley Project!
Unlike the fake sanctuaries around South East Asia, this one was legit. The places that let you ride, pet, feed, play or bathe with the elephants... The places that force these animals to do tricks for you like pick you up with their trunks or paint you a picture... Those places don’t have the animals best interest at heart and often do major physical and mental and emotional harm to their elephants. Elephant Valley Project, however, is different.
Their elephants are out enjoying their lands while being watched and cared for by their mahouts. When groups of visitors come to see the elephants, the mahouts radio their location and we hike off to them. We watch the elephants enjoy going where they like and doing what they want. Because these aren’t wild elephants that can’t care for themselves, this is the closest to natural their lives can get.

The Mondulkiri Project in Cambodia
The Mondulkiri Project is an award winning elephant sanctuary in Cambodia. They have signed an agreement with Bunong indigenous elders to rent a large area of forest close to Sen Monorom to protect it from logging. They also plan to start an elephant breeding program there soon. The Mondulkiri Project is a community project, with monies raised being used to protect the forests for their elephant sanctuary and to support the local Bunong hill tribes with employment, medicine and food donations.

About the mondulkiri sanctuary
The Mondulkiri sanctuary is an Eco-tourism visitor center established by L.E.A.F (local environmental awareness foundation) Cambodia, a nonprofit community organization, which helped to develop forest / wildlife Eco-tourism attractions that directly sustain local forest and animal conservation projects.
The center is located within a natural wildlife corridor area, which is made up of several primary rain forest sections, active / inactive indigenous farms and deforested sections that are currently used to plant crops for feeding the animals.
The lush Otai river, which runs along the valley and attracts local wildlife, hides several beautiful waterfalls, natural pools and rapids.
The center activity provides regular support for indigenous communities in Mondulkiri and for sponsoring the retirement and release of working elephants. For more information about our activity, visit our website project page.

This is how you are supposed to experience elephants in Southeast Asia! No chains, no hooks and no fences. Just watching, feeding and washing them :) The Mondulkiri Project doesn't offer or allow elephant rides and lets them walk freely around the protected forest.
