Mongoose in Yala National Park
Bathing in Jaffna's Holy Pond. ????????
After a breakfast of 10 different Sri Lankan foods we found a small shop to hire scooters for the day. That gave us the freedom to explore much more of the Jaffna region than we did the previous day by walking.
We left the city to look for somewhere to relax and swim and found a beach resort hotel on an island connected by a bridge. Unfortunately it was never ending shallow water so we couldn't swim there.
Somewhere that we definitely would be able to swim was Keerimalai Pond, an ancient and holy water spring next to the sea.
The legend goes that there were two people in India, one cursed with a mongoose face and one with a horse face. They crossed the water to bathe in this spring that was known by Hindus to have miraculous healing properties and their faces then changed into humans.
There were quite a few visitors to the pond but they were all coming just to look at it. We were the only ones to actually go for a swim. I enjoyed it a lot more than the pool in my Jaffna hotel.
On the way back to Jaffna city we stopped off to eat some delicious local mangoes and chat with the local Keerimalai people. Apparently the type of mango we tried were called Vlad. I've never seen them before. They were small and extremely sweet. I'll definitely be looking for them again during my travels in Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka Yala Safari - Am I Being Scammed?
One of the favourite tourist stops in Sri Lanka is Yala National Park. The park has the highest concentration of leopards in the world, and an organized safari promises a 50% chance of seeing one.
We had a bit of a rough time with this one. At 4:30 AM, we were picked up by the man who sold us the tickets, and he walked us over to the vehicle we would be taking (he wouldn't be coming). He claimed that his manager took the money we gave him and he needed to borrow 2500 LKR in order to have enough for the park admission. He said he’d be able to pay us back when we got back from the safari. It wasn’t a great way to start off the tour. It smelt like a scam to me, but our options were limited - give him the extra cash, or don’t go on the safari? I reluctantly paid and we headed out.
The park was packed with trucks and tourists. It was Christmas holiday in Sri Lanka - something we did not anticipate - so it was extra busy. We spent a lot of time in lines of vehicles, but we did manage to see some amazing wildlife.
Yala National park has leopards, elephants, deer, buffalo, monkeys, bears, crocodiles, boars, mongoose, snakes, lizards, turtles, 215 species of bird, and much more.
It’s possible to do 1/2 day tours (from around 5AM-noon), or full day tours. We paid about 4500 LKR each for a half day tour. This included the park's admission, which is something like 3000. I think the guides get a group deal, so they end up making more that it may seem. At any rate, it’s a pretty good deal and an enjoyable half day. I probably wouldn’t take a full day tour though, as I think it would get too repetitive.
New videos are posted every Tuesday and Thursday at 3PM EST.

Sri Lanka doctors battle dengue fever
Cases of dengue fever have increased dramatically around the world in the last few decades.
The virus that causes the disease is transmitted by mosquito bites and more than 2.5 billion people, over 40 per cent of the global population, are at risk from the disease.
The World Health Organisation said that there are likely to be 50 to 100 million dengue infections every year.
The countries that have the highest cases are in Southeast Asia and the Western Pacific where many victims are children.
Al Jazeera's Minelle Fernandez reports now on what Sri Lanka is doing to combat the disease.
