Seal's Narrow Escape from Great White Shark off Chatham, MA
A seal narrowly escapes the jaws of a Great White shark by leaping out of the water. The shark follows close behind and both breach in a stunning bit of footage captured by Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries.
“The escape was incredible to witness. We’ve seen three predations over the last two years and this was a first — to watch a white shark leap from the water in an attempt to grab a grey seal. The seal won that battle but shortly after the same shark successfully consumed a different seal further offshore,” Cynthia Wigren, president of the conservancy, said in a statement.
The conservancy posted a photo on its Twitter feed of blood in the water and a dark shape beneath, saying, “The research team witnessed a successful predation (white shark eating a seal) today.”

CAPTION: Officials in Chatham, Massachusetts, say they are relieved that Earl has weakened but are still warning residents and tourists not to tempt fate by venturing too close to the water at the height of the storm Friday night. (Sept. 3)
They are battening down the hatches in Chatham, the quaint Oceanside town on the eastern edge of Cape Cod.
Hurricane Earl pounded North Carolina and Virginia over night and it's projected path has it hitting Cape Cod with heavy winds and rain late friday.
The Chatham institution, the Squire is were many locals plan to ride out the storm.
(SOT)(Richard Sullivan - Manager of The Squire)We're here, we're gonna be open as long as we can. You know depending on how the storm moves - if it's closer to us we may have to close down a little early tonight to get our staff home to our families, but we are just gonna see what happens.
Out at the Chatham Lighthouse, hurricane flags blew as people came out to take a look at the ocean for the last time before the storm hits.
Some tried to take advantage of the last few hours without rain, but most came just for a look.
Bill Carey is from alaska and while he think there might be a little wind he isn't too concerned.
(SOT)(Bill Carey) A little rain and wind doesn't bother those people from Ketchikan, Alaska, But I also lived here in my youth and people get used to these things, we should be able to survive.
On any other labor day weekend this beach would have been filled with kids playing in the water and along the beach.
Today though, the water is off limits and children on the beach are onlookers like everyone else.
(SOT)(Michael Vaughan)(father with kids) I think it is gonna be interesting, we are all real excited about it. we think it is gonna be exciting and interesting.

Cape Cod is a peninsula Destination & Attractions | VisitCape Cod is a peninsula
Cape Cod is a peninsula that juts out into the Atlantic Ocean in the easternmost portion of the state of Massachusetts, in the Northeastern United States. Its historic, maritime character and ample beaches attract heavy tourism during the summer months.
Cape Cod stretches from Provincetown in the northeast to Woods Hole in the southwest. Cape Cod, as defined by the Cape Cod Commission's enabling legislation, is comprised of Barnstable County. The Cape Cod Canal cuts 17.5 miles (28.2 km) roughly across the base of the peninsula, though the western boundary of the cape extends to include small portions of the towns of Bourne and Sandwich which lie on the mainland side of the canal.[2]
Two road bridges cross the Cape Cod Canal: the Sagamore Bridge and the Bourne Bridge. In addition, the Cape Cod Canal Railroad Bridge carries railway freight and limited passenger services onto the Cape. Cape territory is divided into fifteen towns with many villages Like Cape Cod itself, the islands south of the Cape have evolved from whaling and trading areas to become resort destinations, attracting wealthy families, celebrities, and other tourists. These include the large nearby islands of Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket, which are themselves famous summer tourist destinations, commonly accessed by ferry from Cape Cod. The phrases Cape Cod and the Islands and the Cape and Islands are often used to describe the whole region of Barnstable County, Dukes County (including the Vineyard and the smaller Elizabeth Islands), and Nantucket County.
Several small islands right off Cape Cod, including Monomoy Island, Monomoscoy Island, Popponesset Island, and Seconsett Island, are also in Barnstable County,More Info
