- The 2015 Gallatin Whitewater Festival on the Gallatin River near Big Sky, Montana shot in 4K aerial video. Kayakers and rafting companies mixed company as the busy Mad Mile saw one of its busiest days of the year in this low water, low snowpack year.
Gallatin River on U.S. Highway 191 in Montana
Highway 191 follows the Gallatin River between West Yellowstone and Bozeman, Montana. The Gallatin, a tributary of the Missouri River, is incredibly scenic and one of the premiere rafting rivers in the West, not to mention a popular fly-fishing destination as well. Calm water alternates with beautiful rapids and challenging whitewater. I didn't get the chance this trip to do any rafting but it's high on my must-do list for next time. What I did get this trip are a few video shots of the Gallatin as I rode Scenic Highway 191 to Bozeman from Yellowstone.

Floating the Smith River Montana (Shortened) - Family Rafting Adventure with Kids
After years of wanting to, we finally got our stuff together, teamed up with some friends and managed to draw a Smith River permit. The Smith River montana river rafting trips permit is one of the most sought after montana rafting trips and the only permitted river in Montana. Smith river rafting is not without it's tricks and tips though. Montana rivers are all open to the public, but floating the smith river requires special Fish Wildlife and Parks permit. The weather can be, uh, variable as we found out but it's an amazingly beautiful place, secluded and relaxing. Floating the smith river is a real treat if you get the chance. We ran into cold and rain and ended up pulling out early but the trip before us got a lot of warm sun and cloudless days.
The rafting is not particularly technical even in high water but you do need to be careful and aware of getting pushed into the walls on tight turns.

Smith River is a tributary of the Missouri River, in central Montana, in the United States. It rises in southern Meagher County in the Castle Mountains and flows northwest in the valley between the Big Belt and Little Belt mountains, past White Sulphur Springs and past Smith River State Park. It turns north-northwest (NNW), and is joined by Hound Creek in Cascade County, and joins the Missouri approximately 9 miles (14 km) southwest of Great Falls.
The Smith is a Class I river from the Camp Baker Fishing Access site near Ft. Logan to its confluence with the Missouri River for public access for recreational purposes.
Noted for its spectacular scenery and blue-ribbon trout fishery, the Smith River is unique in that it has only one public put-in and one public take-out for the entire 59-mile (95 km) segment of river. Boat camps located along the remote river canyon help preserve the unique quality of this area. The Smith River between Camp Baker and Eden Bridge is the only river corridor managed by Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks as a permitted river. Permits for private floats on the Smith River are allocated to the public via a lottery system prior to the spring season. Permit applications are typically available the first week of January each year, with an application deadline of mid-February.
Areas near the Smith River are currently under review as nearby Meagher County and state agencies investigate construction of the Black Butte Copper Project.

The hunting on the ranch is absolutely superb offering upland birds, trophy Rocky mountain elk and nice populations of both whitetail deer and mule deer.
Hiking opportunities are abundant with two of the State's premier recreation drainages in West Rosebud and East Rosebud very close by.
The closest small town is Absarokee, Montana which is located right on the Stillwater river, a blue-ribbon fishery, and it is approximately 20 minutes from the ranch. Adventure Whitewater, one of Montana's top rafting companies is also located in Absarokee and rafts on the Stillwater and Yellowstone rivers for the thrill-seekers in the family.
The ranch is approximately 90 minutes away from the northeast entry to Yellowstone National Park located in Cooke City, Montana. The Beartooth Pass is closed in the winter but the Cooke City area of the Yellowstone National Park is accessible through Gardiner, Montana all winter long and is one of the premier snowmobiling destinations in North America.
There are several great locations on the ranch to build a home, or guest houses, that all have phenomenal Beartooth mountain views. Septic permits are run through Montana DNRC, as are the water well approvals. Stillwater County would be the authority in charge of issuing building permits.
Several forks of Fiddler creek run through the ranch creating a nice riparian corridor and there is significant dry land hay ground that should produce great results from a first cutting in June. This makes the ranch well suited to supporting horses.

Here is some compiled raw footage from some thanksgiving fishing on the Gallatin River. There was only really nymphing producing fish. More specifically stoneflys were working the best.

Established in 1872, Yellowstone National Park is America's first national park. Located in Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho, it is home to a large variety of wildlife including grizzly bears, wolves, bison, and elk. Preserved within Yellowstone National Park are Old Faithful and a collection of the world's most extraordinary geysers and hot springs, and the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone
Yellowstone National Park, established by the U.S. Congress and signed into law by President Ulysses S. Grant on March 1, 1872, is a national park located primarily in the U.S. state of Wyoming, although it also extends into Montana and Idaho. Yellowstone was the first national park in the world, and is known for its wildlife and its many geothermal features, especially Old Faithful Geyser, one of the most popular features in the park. It has many types of ecosystems, but the subalpine forest is dominant.
Native Americans have lived in the Yellowstone region for at least 11,000 years. The region was bypassed during the Lewis and Clark Expedition in the early 19th century. Aside from visits by mountain men during the early-to-mid-19th century, organized exploration did not begin until the late 1860s. The U.S. Army was commissioned to oversee the park just after its establishment. In 1917, administration of the park was transferred to the National Park Service, which had been created the previous year. Hundreds of structures have been built and are protected for their architectural and historical significance, and researchers have examined more than 1,000 archaeological sites.
Yellowstone National Park spans an area of 3,468.4 square miles (8,983 km2), comprising lakes, canyons, rivers and mountain ranges. Yellowstone Lake is one of the largest high-altitude lakes in North America and is centered over the Yellowstone Caldera, the largest supervolcano on the continent. The caldera is considered an active volcano. It has erupted with tremendous force several times in the last two million years. Half of the world's geothermal features are in Yellowstone, fueled by this ongoing volcanism. Lava flows and rocks from volcanic eruptions cover most of the land area of Yellowstone. The park is the centerpiece of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, the largest remaining, nearly intact ecosystem in the Earth's northern temperate zone.
Hundreds of species of mammals, birds, fish and reptiles have been documented, including several that are either endangered or threatened. The vast forests and grasslands also include unique species of plants. Yellowstone Park is the largest and most famous megafauna location in the Continental United States. Grizzly Bears, wolves, and free-ranging herds of bison and elk live in the park. The Yellowstone Park Bison Herd is the oldest and largest public bison herd in the United States. Forest fires occur in the park each year; in the large forest fires of 1988, nearly one third of the park burnt. Yellowstone has numerous recreational opportunities, including hiking, camping, boating, fishing and sightseeing. Paved roads provide close access to the major geothermal areas as well as some of the lakes and waterfalls. During the winter, visitors often access the park by way of guided tours that use either snow coaches or snowmobile.
