Monterey Bay Coastal Recreation Trail
From the series HIDDEN STORIES OF MONTEREY, highlighting lesser known, people, places and things in Monterey.
What is the story behind the waterfront recreation trail from Castroville to Pacific Grove? How did it start? What did it used to be? We get to the bottom of these stories and more about the beloved and scenic Monterey trail.
Monterey Bay Coastal Recreation Trail
The Monterey Bay Coastal Recreational Trail runs some 18 miles from Castroville to Pacific Grove passing through Fisherman’s Wharf, Cannery Row, the Monterey Bay Aquarium and Downtown. Thousands of residents, visitors and commuters use the trail every day but this popular segment of the California Coastal Trail almost didn’t happen. In the possession of the Southern Pacific Railroad Company for almost a century, the land was initially slated for major development until the newly formed California Coastal Commission stepped in and preserved both the trail and the coastline for future generations to enjoy.

Exploring the Monterey Bay Coastal Bike Trail
The Bike Trail stretches from Castroville to the Monterey Peninsula. A large portion of the trail is actual a bike path while some very small portions are shoulder of the road riding. Well maintained and used by both joggers, skaters, walkers and cyclists. Use proper road etiquette when on the bike trail, be courteous to other trail users and stay either to the left or right of the trail.

Monterey is a waterfront community on the central coast of California with a temperate climate year-round. Kayaking, scuba diving, surfing, whale watching and beach-going are just some of the activities to be enjoyed in and around Monterey. Golf, shopping, and driving the spectacular coastline to Big Sur are a few of the many land-based adventures.
Monterey is home to the world-renowned Monterey Bay Aquarium, a must-see attraction that delights and educates millions of visitors every year. Step outside the Aquarium and you're on Cannery Row, where John Steinbeck drew inspiration for his novel about life in Monterey during the heyday of the sardine canning industry. Today the Row is lined with hotels, shops and restaurants and features fun activities for the entire family.
From Cannery Row, you can walk or ride a rented surrey along the scenic Recreation Trail to Fisherman's Wharf. Along the way, you'll see harbor seals, sea otters and pelicans in natural habitats on the dazzling waterfront of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary
Monterey is one of the most historic cities in California. Original adobes are found on many street corners. Some are open for tours while others house contemporary businesses. Visitors can wander through Monterey's rich past, from California's first theatre to Colton Hall, where the state's original constitution was written.

Monterey Fisherman's Wharf - Monterey Bay California
CaliWeGo.com Monterey's Fisherman's Wharf is lined with seafood restaurants, gift shops, jewelry stores, art galleries, and candy shops. Whale watching tours are available in the area. And don't forget to check out the sea lions that seem to sleep all over the bay. Monterey Bay California Fisherman's Wharf. Monterey's Fisherman's Wharf is lined with seafood restaurants ranging from casual, open-air clam bars, to formal indoor dining with views of Monterey Bay. Along with Cannery Row, Fisherman's Wharf is one of the few areas in Monterey that sells souvenirs, so the restaurants are interspersed with gift shops, jewelry stores, art galleries, and candy shops. Whale watching tours and fishing trips leave from the wharf, and sea lions often sleep on the pilings, buoys, and moored boats in the bay.
At the entrance to the wharf is Custom House Plaza, the historical center of Monterey. Here you will find the Custom House, the first government building in California and the location where the United States took Monterey from Mexico in 1846. The Monterey Maritime Museum is also located in Custom House Plaza, detailing both the maritime and cultural history of Monterey and the surrounding area. Many other historic buildings are located in this plaza. It is also the location of the last whalebone sidewalk in the United States.
Accessible almost exclusively to pedestrians, Fisherman's Wharf is located at the end of the Alvarado Mall, just west of the municipal wharf on Lighthouse Avenue. It is also on the Coastal Recreation Trail, providing pedestrian access to Cannery Row and Pacific Grove From Memorial Day to Labor Day the city of Monterey provides a free trolley service to Cannery Row and the Monterey Bay Aquarium. A favorite activity on the wharf, for both tourists and locals, is sailing on the Monterey Bay along Cannery Row.

Day Hikes - Monterey & Carmel - Quarry Park to Veterans Park
Hiking distance: 1.3 miles round trip
Hiking time: 40 minutes
Configuration: out-and-back
Elevation gain: 100 feet
Difficulty: Easy
Exposure: mostly forested
Dogs: allowed
Maps: U.S.G.S. Monterey
Quarry Park is a forested ten-acre park with towering pines and oaks and a lush box canyon. The natural, undeveloped park is tucked into a quiet neighborhood in the hear of residential Monterey. Quarry Park is connected to Veterans Memorial Park, a short distance to its north, via a hiking trail. This short but scenic hike meanders through Quarry Park to the small canyon. The trail then weaves through the hills, skirting homes into Veterans Park. To add distance to the hike, Veterans Memorial Park continues into Huckleberry Hill Nature Preserve.
To the Trailhead:
From Pacific Street, head west on Martin Street. Drive 0.3 miles to Via Gayuba and turn right. Continue 0.2 miles to Via Del Pinar and turn right(north). Go 0.1 miles to the signed park on the left. The park is located between Stephen Place and Herrman Drive.
The Hike:
Pass the trailhead sign and enter Quarry Park. At 100 yards is a signed junction with the Veterans-Quarry Park Trail, our main route. For now, continue straight ahead, staying on the canyon floor. Parallel the stream on the right while strolling under the canopy of towering pines and oaks. At 0.2 miles, the path ends at the base of the vertical-walled box canyon.
Return to the junction and take the Veterans-Quarry Park Trail up the north wall of Quarry Canyon and behind the homes on Dorey Way. At the top is a grassy flat overlooking the canyon. Veer right up a few steps and follow the trail sign. Wind through the greenbelt corridor, with views of Monterey, the bay, and the surrounding mountains. The trail ends at the Veteran Memorial Park parking lot by the campground on the left. The park entrance and Skyline Drive are 250 yards to the left. Just before the entrance, on the north side of the road, is the Huckleberry Hill Nature Preserve trailhead.
Return along the same path.
***I recommend that you bring some bottled water, wear a pair of walking shoes, some sunscreen and some sun glasses with U/V protection for your eyes.
