Great White Shark Attacks Kayaker in Monterey Bay, California
Gene Mace captured the moment a kayaker was attacked by a great white shark in Monterey Bay, California, on March 18.Gene Mace and his wife were out in Monterey Bay when he noticed a man had been flipped from his kayak. Mace took out his camera and saw that the man was under attack by a great white shark. Mace continues to capture the attack as he tells his wife to call for help. His wife can be heard speaking to authorities over the phone. The couple watches helplessly as the kayaker tries to swim away from the great white.
After a few minutes, a boat approaches the kayaker and a man, Lt. Cmdr. Kyle Franklin, can be seen trying to help the kayaker up to the small sailboat. Franklin was out sailing with his wife and daughter when he saw the kayaker frantically swimming away from the shark.
The video cuts off when Franklin approaches the kayaker, but a 29-foot Coast Guard Response Boat, stationed in Monterey Harbor, later arrived to rescue the kayaker, who was too tired and cold to get on the vessel on his own. Credit: Gene Mace Jr via Storyful

Viewing Otters in the Monterey Bay Marine Sanctuary
Sea Otters in the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary face challenges every day to survive but we do not have to be one of those challenges. The explosion of kayak and paddle board traffic on the water has increased the disruptions to the daily lives of these otters therefore, increasing their stress and possibly leading to their early demise. The Marine Mammal Protection act states that you must maintain a distance away that does not change or alter the behavior of the animal (whether that is 10 kayak lengths or 20 kayak lengths). The Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary recommends a distance of 150feet or 15 kayak lengths.
There are fewer than 3000 of this southern sea otter species left and they can only be found here in the Central California coast.
We are trying to educate people and particularly kayakers and paddle boarders to the needs of these animals and asking that we all do our part to help them survive and even grow in numbers.
Kayaking Del Monte Beach to Lover's Point in Monterey Bay California
Monterey Bay in California is one of the most popular recreational kayaking sites in the world. This short video shows kayaking from the Municipal Beach at the end of Del Monte Beach, to Lover's Point and back. Playful sea lions, otters and sea gulls are met along the way with views of the breakwater, cannery row, and the Monterey Bay Aquarium.

Welcome to Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary
A short, acoustic series of images and video representing much of the life and activities you will find within the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. The Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary (MBNMS) is a Federally protected marine area offshore of California's central coast. Stretching from Marin to Cambria, the MBNMS encompasses a shoreline length of 276 miles and 6,094 square miles of ocean. Supporting one of the world's most diverse marine ecosystems, it is home to numerous mammals, seabirds, fishes, invertebrates and plants in a remarkably productive coastal environment. The MBNMS was established for the purpose of resource protection, research, education, and public use of this national treasure. The MBNMS is part of a system of 13 National Marine Sanctuaries and one marine national monument, administered by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The Monterey Bay Marine Sanctuary and Disturbances
The Monterey Bay, known around the world for its beauty. It is home to an astounding array of wildlife. Casual observers can see more than 300 species of birds here at various times of the year, 33 kinds of marine mammals and thousands of different fishes and invertebrates that thrive in the rich waters.
It is such a natural wonder that the bay was designated a national marine sanctuary in 1992 to extend extra protections to this jewel. Since then, the state of California and local communities have enacted more restrictions to protect plants and animals along and in the bay.
Still, Monterey Bay has problems with people interfering with nature, intentionally or otherwise. It is hard enough for the wildlife to survive in the harsh environment of the ocean without humans disrupting their daily cycles and adding unnatural stresses.
In the past few years there has been a proliferation of kayakers and more recently paddle boarders in Monterey Bay and not all of them know how to or care to avoid the animals that are trying to rest. Several times a day now we see kayaks or paddle boarders ride right into the kelp with sleeping otters and get so close the animals wake up, dive and flee for their safety. We've also seen many go into restricted coves and land on no-access beaches scaring away colonies of harbor seals trying to sleep there.
While such intruders may not see animals die in front of them, they are contributing to shortened lives.
We are working to educate those kayakers and paddle boarders who are violating the law and not maintaining a safe distance from the wildlife. Here in the Monterey Bay Marine Sanctuary we care about our wildlife and are taking actions to protect them. Please share this video and the series of videos to come to help spread the word and protect the amazing creatures that live among us. Monterey, CA
Today we continued our drive up the California Pacific Coast Highway, Rt 1 from Big Sur towards Monterey! Of course the scenery was spectacular, and the drive less scary as I am getting used to hilly twists and turns with no room for adjustment hauling an RV... We took the local bus line to Cannery Row and had a great day exploring all over. The next day was a short scooter ride to Fisherman's Warf. Here we saw many sea lions, kayaks and boats in a truly scenic waterfront surrounding!
