ART IN THE ADOBES Festival 2012, Monterey, CA
The Art in the Adobes Festival is a unique event combining Monterey's historic art collections and buildings. This year's theme was Rediscovery: Monterey Peninsula Artists at Home and Abroad.
Flows to Bay Opening at the Museum of Monterey
Formerly the Monterey Maritime Museum, the Museum of Monterey (MoM) has been reinvented by the Monterey History & Art Association (MHAA) for a new era.
California's progressive, inclusive and creative spirit is a lighthouse to the world and it all started in Monterey. In 1846, without firing a shot, Commodore John Drake Sloat captured Monterey and claimed California as American domain. In 1849, the California state constitution was written, debated and signed in Monterey. Within the next year, California became the first state in the West. In 1931, a group of Monterey visionaries created the MHAA to honor this unique contribution to the west's history.
MoM will continue MHHA's mission to identify and preserve those objects that tell the story of Monterey's historic role in the birth and development of the wildly innovative state of California. And further to provide an environment and support for those individuals and organizations whose new stories demonstrate and celebrate that bold creative spirit.
Building on the past, MoM will help make living history -- locally, regionally and globally.
MoM is open Tuesday -- Sunday 10 a.m. -- 5 p.m. The Museum is closed Monday. The cost to visit is $5. Lobby exhibits are free. For more information please call (831) 372-2608 or go to montereyhistory.org.

Monterey Fisherman's Wharf - Monterey Bay California
CaliWeGo.com Monterey's Fisherman's Wharf is lined with seafood restaurants, gift shops, jewelry stores, art galleries, and candy shops. Whale watching tours are available in the area. And don't forget to check out the sea lions that seem to sleep all over the bay. Monterey Bay California Fisherman's Wharf. Monterey's Fisherman's Wharf is lined with seafood restaurants ranging from casual, open-air clam bars, to formal indoor dining with views of Monterey Bay. Along with Cannery Row, Fisherman's Wharf is one of the few areas in Monterey that sells souvenirs, so the restaurants are interspersed with gift shops, jewelry stores, art galleries, and candy shops. Whale watching tours and fishing trips leave from the wharf, and sea lions often sleep on the pilings, buoys, and moored boats in the bay.
At the entrance to the wharf is Custom House Plaza, the historical center of Monterey. Here you will find the Custom House, the first government building in California and the location where the United States took Monterey from Mexico in 1846. The Monterey Maritime Museum is also located in Custom House Plaza, detailing both the maritime and cultural history of Monterey and the surrounding area. Many other historic buildings are located in this plaza. It is also the location of the last whalebone sidewalk in the United States.
Accessible almost exclusively to pedestrians, Fisherman's Wharf is located at the end of the Alvarado Mall, just west of the municipal wharf on Lighthouse Avenue. It is also on the Coastal Recreation Trail, providing pedestrian access to Cannery Row and Pacific Grove From Memorial Day to Labor Day the city of Monterey provides a free trolley service to Cannery Row and the Monterey Bay Aquarium. A favorite activity on the wharf, for both tourists and locals, is sailing on the Monterey Bay along Cannery Row.

Monterey, California
The City of Monterey in Monterey County is located on the southern edge of Monterey Bay, on Central California's Pacific coast. It stands at an elevation of 26 feet (8 m) above sea level,[2] on a land area of 8.466 sq mi (21.927 km²). The 2010 census recorded a population of 27,810.
Monterey was the capital of Alta California under both Spain and Mexico. It was the only port of entry for taxable goods in California. In 1846 the U.S. flag was raised over the Customs House, and California became part of the United States after the ensuing Mexican-American War.
The city had California's first theatre, public building, public library, publicly funded school, printing press, and newspaper. The city and surrounding area have attracted artists since the late 19th century and many celebrated painters and writers have lived there. Until the 1950s, there was an abundant fishery.
Among Monterey's notable present-day attractions are the Monterey Bay Aquarium, Cannery Row, Fisherman's Wharf and the annual Monterey Jazz Festival.
