The Ride Up To Scotts Bluff National Monument - Scottsbluff Nebraska
Sometimes the weather doesn't always do what you want it to do, or requires time to initiate. On May 23rd 2018, we had some time to kill in Scottsbluff, Nebraska and as such we took opportunity to visit the Scotts Bluff National Monument. The drive up to the national monument was a long and twisty road, which was fun to drive along. I decided to use my phone to record the drive - as it seemed interesting at the time!
Once at the top, we had some beautiful views across Scottsbluff and the surrounding areas of Nebraska. The skies were blue and it was very warm. Looking around, we heard a rattler or two.
Sometimes, chasing storms takes you to places you wouldn't dream of visiting - or even have heard of. Scotts Bluff National Monument was one of them. The video also shows how we came across this landmark - chasing storms the night before - and includes a few of our long exposure shots - where the monument and the storm clouds almost make the world appear as a martian landscape.

Nebraska Land For Sale | Three Oak Ranch | Springview, NE
Location, location, location! Here is an excellent opportunity to purchase prime recreational land that is nearby the Thomas Creek Wildlife Management Area and within 2 miles of the Niobrara National Scenic River! Three Oak Ranch consists of 164.45 +/- Acres of spectacular recreational opportunities with an abundance of wildlife and has great access right off Highway 183. Dry Creek meanders through a portion of it and the tall ponderosa pines and bur oak trees provide excellent deer habitat and turkey roosts.
Extensive improvements have been done throughout the last two years of ownership. Approximately 81.4 acres of clearing was done to remove cedar trees and stumps in cohesion with the Nebraska Forest Service. After the removal of these trees, the weeds were sprayed, and grass was planted which will aid in reducing woody fuels buildup and will improve forest health. This also allowed for food plots to be created, numerous trails were made, and a culvert was added creating better access and allowing more hunting to take place for the many white-tailed deer, mule deer and turkeys that have been seen. Bobcats have also been sighted on the game cameras and an occasional elk has been heard. This is the perfect set up for the addition of blinds, tree stands and feeders to be installed. More trails could also be added if you are an avid ATV enthusiast.
In 2017, a new 280 Sq. Ft. cabin was added near an overlook of the scenic Niobrara Valley. It was tastefully finished with pine wood that came from the land and was milled in the nearby town of Springview. A generator and wood burning stove have been sufficiently supplying heat and electricity to the cabin, it’s wired for electricity and solar options could also be an option. There are two lofts that will accommodate two queen size mattresses and there is ample room for additional seating or sleeping space. The private bathroom has a composting toilet and there is a charming covered front porch perfect for those rocking chairs. A firepit area has also been created should you want to roast marshmallows, star gaze or warm up while being in the great outdoors.
Talk about storage….a 30’ x 40’ shop with a concrete floor was added, along with a 12’ x 24’ garage and a 12’ x 12’ tool shed.
New fencing was installed along the North & East sides of the property along with several new gates.
This property could potentially qualify for a conservation easement and has cattle grazing opportunities.
Three Oak Ranch and its surroundings have all the amenities an outdoor enthusiast would desire. Whether you are a hunter, fisherman, ATV rider or that person just looking to find peace & quiet in a beautiful and relaxing setting-this is the place!

A Surprise in Nebraska
Scotts Bluff Monument was, without a doubt, the biggest surprise during our trip to the Midwest. Towering above the nearby town of Scottsbluff, Ne, this bluff separates the Oregon and Mormon Trails and offers some of the greatest views in Nebraska. Nebraska Back Roads
Four clips are shown in this video which starts with a dirt road in the Platte River Valley near Kearney. The next two clips are in the hills near Lexington. The last is in eastern Nebraska near Blair. I enjoyed traveling these roads and it's really neat that there is hardly any other traffic on the roads. My favorite clips are in the hills. There are hardly any trees and I could see almost every fold of the land. So, take a trip on what might be called the frontier........

Chimney Rock, The most picturesque landmark along the Oregon trail in Nebraska, California
Chimney Rock, located in Morrill County in western Nebraska, California. A prominent geological rock formation Rising nearly 300 feet above the surrounding North Platte River valley, the peak of Chimney Rock is 4,226 feet above sea level. During the middle 19th century it served as a landmark along the Oregon Trail, the California Trail, and the Mormon Trail, which ran along the north side of the rock. It is visible for many miles from the east along U.S. Route 26. It was first recorded mention of Chimney Rock was in 1827 by Joshua Pilcher, but in 1813 it was first non-natives to see the pillar were probably the Astorians of Robert Stuart in their eastern journey from the Pacific Ocean. The name Chimney Rock probably originated from early fur traders. It went through a variety of names before becoming Chimney Rock such as Chimley Rock, Chimney Tower, and Elk's Peak, but Chimney Rock had become the most commonly used name by the 1840's.
The pillar consists primarily of Brule clay interlayered with volcanic ash and Arikaree sandstone. The harder sandstone layers near the top have protected the pillar since it broke away from the retreating cliff line to the south, dating back to the Oligocene Age around 34 million to 23 million years ago. Chimney Rock rises approximately 286 feet above its surroundings. Some travelers believed that the rock spire may have been upwards of 30 feet higher than its current height, suggesting that wind, erosion, or a lightning strike had caused the top part of the spire to break off. It is approximately 6.5 km. South of the current Bayard in Millard County. Today it was Chimney Rock was designated a National Historic Site on August 9, 1956 and is a National Park Service affiliated area. It is maintained and operated by the Nebraska State Historical Society. Chimney Rock and Independence Rock further west are probably the most famous features along the Oregon Trail. In March 1, 2006, the Nebraska State Quarter was released. The quarter features a covered wagon headed west past Chimney Rock, memorializing Nebraska's role in westward migration.

2016 Panhandle Polar Plunge
Despite temperatures that didn't feel very polar Saturday, February 27th, the 2016 Panhandle Polar Plunge took place in the North Platte River as 20 teams participated in temperatures in the 60's. But with water temperatures in the low 40's, many of the plungers commented that it still felt very cold.
Scotts Bluff County Sheriff Mark Overman says it's such a fun atmosphere with people dressed up in their colorful costumes. Overman says the community always comes out strong to support Nebraska Special Olympics
Overman says final numbers were not in yet, but said preliminary figures show around $22,000 has been raised, with 110 plungers paticipating for 2016.
Special Olympics Nebraska serves 4,000 individuals across the state. Its mission is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic- type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy, and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills, and friendships with their families, and other Special Olympics athletes and the community.
