A Walk Around Monument aux Girondins, Bordeaux, France
Monument aux Girondins (The Girondins Monument) is a dramatic fountain statue in Bordeaux which commemorates the Girondists.
The Girondists were originally part of France’s Legislative Assembly, becoming one of the groups which supported the French Revolution as it began. In fact, they were one of the legislature’s most militant sections.
However, in October 1793, the Girondists were executed under the orders of one of the leaders of the Revolution, Maximilien Robespierre after they began opposing the movement.
Monument aux Girondins was built in the early twentieth century as a memorial to the Girondists, now considered to be political martyrs. Depicting the Statue of Liberty standing atop a large pillar and flanked by two pools containing spectacular statues, Monument aux Girondins is a striking memorial to the Reign of Terror.

The monument to the Girondins , located in Bordeaux , Place des Quinconces , was built between 1894 and 1902 in memory of the Girondin deputies victims of the Terror . The Bordelais commonly call it column of Girondins or monument of the Girondins. It is classified as a historical monument since March 16 , 2011after being registered on July 8 , 2004 , the classification having been approved by the Bordeaux City Council on October 25, 2010.
As early as 1868, the architect Julien Guadet , grand-nephew of the Girondin deputy Elie Guadet , established a project for the memory of the Girondins for the place Dauphine - today Place Gambetta - in Bordeaux. It is on this place that the last executions of Girondin deputies, including Elie Guadet, and their supporters, took place in 1794 . Exhibited at the Salon de Paris in 1870 , the project will not be realized. In 1881, the city council of the city of Bordeaux made the decision to erect a monument in memory of the deputies of the group of Girondins.
It consists of a large base framed by two basins, decorated with horses and bronze groups, and surmounted by a column of 43 meters where culminates (at 54 meters height) the bronze statue of Liberty breaking its chains .
The following groups are among the sculptures :
to the Grand Theater : the triumph of the Republic . At the foot of the chariot and its horses : Ignorance, Lie and Vice. The quadriga of the sea horses is a representation of Happiness;
towards the Chartrons: the triumph of Concorde ;
towards the river: the Tribune with the Gallic rooster , on its right: History, and on its left: Eloquence (two seated people);
to Place Tourny: the city of Bordeaux sitting on the bow of a ship with a cornucopia . To the right of the base, a river allegory : the Dordogne , and left the Garonne .
The realization of all the sculptures was shared between several art founders with the following distribution:
the Denonvilliers foundry of Sermaize-sur-Sault (Marne): the four reptilian horses and Liberty;
the Establishments Leblanc-Barbedienne of Paris: the first group realized for the basin of the Republic, the lie, the vice and the ignorance;
the Durenne establishments of Sommevoire (Haute-Marne): The triumph of the Republic, the shells, the frogs, the reeds and the six children (the first group of three children represents Trade and Industry, the second group evokes the Fine Arts)
the foundry of Val d'Osne (Haute-Marne): the Republic, the basin of the triumph of the Concorde , and the four horses-fish.

A Walk Around Place de la Bourse, Bordeaux, France
Place de la Bourse is a square in Bordeaux, France and one of the city's most recognizable sights. Built from 1730 to 1775 along the Garonne River, it was a multi-building development designed by architect Ange-Jacques Gabriel. It is within the historic part of the city that has been recognized on the UNESCO World Heritage List as an outstanding urban and architectural ensemble of the 18th century.
In the original plan, a statue of King Louis XV of France was erected in the square. This statue was destroyed during the French Revolution. After the destruction of the statue, a Corinthian column-fountain was built on the square. Finally, in 1869 the sculpture Three Graces was installed in the same location.
Design of the surrounding buildings was finished by Ange-Jacques Gabriel in 1739; the project was issued for construction two weeks after the architect's death. After his death, his son was put in charge and finished the construction of the buildings.
This square is one of the most representative works of classical French architectural art of the eighteenth century. In the north stood the Palais de la Bourse (current Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Bordeaux) and in the south the Hotel des Fermes (now Interregional Directorate of Customs and Indirect Rights, which houses the National Museum of Customs). It was designed by Ange-Jacques Gabriel between 1735 and 1738. The sculptures represent Minerve protecting the arts and Mercury favoring the commerce of the city.
In 2007 it was included on the UNESCO World Heritage List as an outstanding urban and architectural ensemble of the 18th century.
