Monument to the People’s Heroes
There is a simple tall tower erected in Huangpu Park at the northern end of Bund alongside River Huangpu towards Waibaidu Bridge which is assigned as Monument to the People’s Heroes or Shanghai People Yingxiong Memorial in the line of another monument of the same name erected in Tiananmen Square in Beijing. This tower is erected as memorial to those soldiers and heroes who laid down their lives in the Second Opium War (1856-60) imposed by the allied powers of England, France and America against the Chinese to sell opium in China forcibly in return for silk, tea and porcelain.

Senior Chinese Leaders Pay Tribute to Deceased Heroes at Ceremony Marking Martyrs' Day
Chinese President Xi Jinping and other senior Chinese leaders attended a ceremony to honor and remember deceased national heroes on the third Martyrs' Day at the Tian'anmen Square in the center of Beijing on Friday morning.
The leaders together with some 3,000 representatives from all walks of life, including veterans who participated in the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, laid flower baskets at the Monument to the People's Heroes at the Tian'anmen Square.
Following a period in which the whole crowd bowed their heads in silent tribute and a patriotic chorus song by the children, nine baskets of flowers were laid in front of the monument. Taller than a man, each basket was carried by two soldiers.
President Xi tidied the red ribbons tied on the baskets and then led a group of senior officials on a walk of tribute around the monument.
Premier Li Keqiang and other senior leaders including Zhang Dejiang, Liu Yunshan, Wang Qishan and Zhang Gaoli attended the ceremony.
The ceremony was presided over by Guo Jinlong, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and Beijing's Party chief.
In August 2014, China's top legislature approved September 30 as the Martyrs' Day to commemorate those who sacrificed their lives in the fight for national independence and prosperity. The date is one day before the National Day.
Martyrs, as defined by the Party and government, are people who sacrificed their lives for national independence and prosperity, as well as the welfare of the people in modern times, or after the First Opium War (1840-1842).
It is estimated that China has about 20 million martyrs. Around 1.93 million of them have been named in the government's directory, while the rest could not be identified. The number has been increasing by about 300 annually in recent years.
Among them, many were soldiers, revolutionaries and Communist leaders in the early years. And there were also many ordinary Chinese who sacrificed their lives for the common good.
Facing the Tian'anmen Gate Tower and with its back to the Memorial Hall of late Chinese leader Mao Zedong, the Monument to the People's Heroes is often visited by state leaders on the National Day.
This year marks the 90th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China and the 80th anniversary of the victory of the Long March.

Beijing, China - Tiananmen Square, Forbidden City, Monument to the Heroes, Forbidden City
Although severely jet lagged, we didn't want to waste our first day of sightseeing in Beijing. We stayed nearby and walked to Tianamen Square and visited the Forbidden City.
Tianamen Square is the largest city square in the world and has been the site of many events. The most notable was in 1989, when a pro-democracy movement in China saw thousands of protesters gather there. Hundreds of protesters were killed by Government troops in the streets leading from the square.* Ironically, Tianamen Square is named after the Tianamen Gate, which means Gate of Heavenly Peace. Tianamen Gate sits to the north and separates the square from the Forbidden City.
