THREE-SPINNED STICKLEBACK (Gasterosteus aculeatus) //
The film tells about a modest fish - a three-needle stickleback, which played a significant role in the life of Leningraders in the terrible years of the blockade: many residents of besieged Leningrad owe a stickleback life. There is a monument devoted to this small fish in Kronstadt.
During the blockade, when food supplies ran out, almost all the fish were caught and eaten in the gulf and canals, only the stickleback was left: it was not used to eat in peacetime, was considered to be “weed fish”.
Residents of besieged Leningrad tell in the film how this fish helped them survive the terrible years. The stickleback rushed into the Neva and the canals during spawning. The people of Leningrad were fishing it with everything that was possible: bags, T-shirts, baskets.
In addition to historical aspects, the film also talks about biology and behavioral patterns of this species. It is interesting that only the father takes care of the offspring of the sticklebacks. In the summer of 2018, the author of the film conducted a unique underwater shoot on the White Sea, on Cape Kartesh and Sredny Island, visiting two biological stations: the station of St. Petersburg State University and the station of the Zoological Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
The main ame of Pavel Glazkov is to awaken people’s love for nature, that, in his opinion, can be reached only through knowledge.
