Aliya Moldagulova (1925-1943) and Manshuk Mametova (1922-1943), the heroes of the Soviet Union, were among the fighters. The memorial honoring their deeds of arms was erected in the garden near “Astana” square in 1997.

175.The Old Square
The group of buildings around Astana Square in the center of Almaty gives us an idea of the history of a city’s architecture.
The government center of the Republic was found in Almaty between 1920 and 1930 after the capital of Kazakhstan moved from Kyzyl Orda to Almaty.
The Cossack Square of old Almaty was planned to be transformed into the Red Square in accordance with a layout plan. But those plans couldn’t be realized because of the start of The Great Patriotic War. The process of reconstruction was renewed in 1950th. The Lenin Square was built instead of the Red Square. The numerous parades, meetings, and demonstrations, so popular during the Soviet times, were held on the square between 1957 and 1980.
Nowadays the square is a place for national celebrations. People can enjoy the concerts of different music bands during the holidays.
There is a monument in the center of the park near the Government House. It was build in favor of two hero ladies Manshuk Mametova and Aliya Moldagulova who died at the Great Patriotic War.
The squire’s landscape is designed in French style with its elegant straight geometric lines, which can be observed in the design of KBTU.

The fights and the losses of Kazakhstan people against Nazi aggression // IITU
IS-1811K Dzhumadilov Azamat and Aralbaev Takhir
From the first days of the war took a truly national character, because the defeat in it would lead to a loss of hope for a decent life and a happy future. Kazakhstan made a significant contribution to the victory. There was no fighting on the territory of the Republic, but the events of the war were closely connected with our region. Millions of our compatriots made their military and labour contribution to the defeat of the enemy. Kazakhstanis showed their heroism and courage in the first days of the war when the power of the fascist attack took over the Brest fortress. In its defence was attended by our illustrious soldiers-countrymen: K.Semenchenko, who became the first Kazakhstani Hero of the Soviet Union, R. Khabibullin, A. Baizhigitov, G. Zhumatov, V. Fursov.
The most important event of the first year of the great Patriotic war was the historic battle of Moscow. Hitler's command made a special bet on the capture of the capital of Russia. On the outskirts of Moscow were concentrated the main forces of the Nazi army. In the battle of Moscow under the command of Major-General I. Panfilov fought the soldiers of the three hundred and a sixteenth infantry division. Twenty-eight Panfilov heroes, led by political instructor V. Klochkov, at the battle near Dubosekovo station knocked out eighteen enemy tanks, almost all died but did not miss the enemy. They put a monument in the Park of Almaty, a book Volokolamsk highway was written about them.
Not only men but also women voluntarily went to defend the Homeland. They brought shells, were snipers, pilots, sailors, tankers, guerrillas – they were soldiers. There is hardly any military profession, which our brave women could not cope with as well as their brothers, husbands, fathers, wrote Marshal of the Soviet Union A. Eremenko.
Stay alive was a great happiness, because the war did not spare anyone: no men, no women, no old people, no children. Among those who did not return from the war, the glorious daughters of the Kazakh people – Manshuk Mametova and Aliya Moldagulova, whose names entered the Golden chronicle in the history of the war.
Twenty-one years lived Manshuk when an enemy bullet cut short its life. The life that has just begun, and which had still to learn loyalty and love, a sense of motherhood and joy of his favorite works. She was left all alone, the enemies were advancing, but, furnished with three machine guns, three hours Manshuk restrained the furious attacks of the enemy. The blast knocked the machine gun, the blood rushed to the face of Manshuk. She died, but the residents of the city of Nevel, for which Manshuk gave her life, honour the memory of the young Kazakh heroine.
The great Patriotic war was a severe test for all the peoples of our country. Huge sacrifices were made on the altar of Victory. However, it has become a real triumph of the human mind, freedom, showed samples of the highest heroism and self-sacrifice. No one has the right to cross out the heroism and courage of the Soviet soldier, his main contribution to the salvation of the world from Nazism, the lessons of war should be a real warning to those who are building plans for world domination.
