City Description:
Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam, is known for its centuries-old architecture and a rich culture with Southeast Asian, Chinese and French influences. At its heart is the chaotic Old Quarter, where the narrow streets are roughly arranged by trade. There are many little temples, including Bach Ma, honoring a legendary horse, plus Đồng Xuân Market, selling household goods and street food.Other landmarks include One Pillar Pagoda, a tiny temple atop a stone pillar, and the 11th-century Temple of Literature, once home to a Confucian academy. French colonial buildings dot the city, from the neoclassical Opera House to the Gothic Revival St. Joseph’s Cathedral. The mausoleum of Communist leader Ho Chi Minh and a museum at Hoa Lo Prison (also known as the Hanoi Hilton, which held prisoners of war) recall the Vietnam War. Cultural activities range from tai chi martial arts around Hoàn Kiếm Lake to traditional chamber music and water puppetry.
Weather and Events:
Most visitors come in Nov–Dec and Mar–Apr, when the weather is generally warm and clear. The tropical climate is humid year-round, with a hot and rainy monsoon season May–Sep. Important holidays include Tết, or Vietnamese New Year (Jan/Feb, dates vary); the Full Moon/Mid-Autumn Festival (Aug/Sep, dates vary); and National Day (Sep 2), celebrated with fireworks and boat races on the lake.

Currently on his state visit to Vietnam, President Moon Jae-in has met with South Korean football coach Park Hang-seo as well as Korean residents of Vietnam. On Friday, he holds summit talks with the Vietnamese president and other ranking officials in an effort to lay the groundwork for Seoul's new southern policy initiative.
[Pkg]
President Moon Jae-in kicked off his state visit to Vietnam at a football training center in Hanoi. He met with South Korean football coach Park Hang-seo who heads Vietnam's national football team and led the under-23 team to a second place finish in the Under-23 Asian Cup in January. Moon also encouraged the Vietnamese athletes. During a banquet gathering with some 400 Korean residents living in the Southeast Asian nation, President Moon called Vietnam a key cooperative partner in Korea's new southern policy initiative. He asked the residents to play their role in the civic sector to build strong bilateral ties.
[Soundbite] Pres. Moon Jae-in : Each and every one of you is a diplomat of Korea. I believe in the united power of the Korean community in Vietnam which is the largest in Southeast Asia.
He will also meet with other ranking officials including the general-secretary of Vietnam's Communist Party. Moon will also visit the home of the late revolutionary leader Hồ Chí Minh in efforts to woo the hearts of the Vietnamese people.

STORYLINE
A spectacular traditional fire dragon dance passed through Hong Kong on Saturday as part of the mid-autumn festival of the moon celebrated in many parts of Asia.
Locals from the Tai Hang district of Hong Kong island ran through the narrow back streets with the giant 67-metre (220-foot) long dragon made of burning incense sticks.
The noisy, smoky parade attracted both locals and tourists.
We almost got burned. The fire was coming our way, we had to get back but it was very interesting, very exciting, said 62-year-old Mike Shannon from Texas.
One young fire dragon volunteer was very excited about being involved in the parade.
My heart beat so fast when I saw the fire dragon pass through. When I hear the sound of the drum, it's like my heart follows the beat of the drum sound, said 8-year-old Leung Chui-hung.
In mainland China, people enjoyed a public holiday as they celebrated the autumn harvest as part of the moon festival.
A full moon shone brightly in an unusually clean Beijing sky as locals stocked up on traditional moon cakes.
The moon cakes, pastries stuffed with a variety of sweet and savoury fillings, are wrapped in elaborate packaging and given as gifts to relatives and friends.
The cakes are given to thank people for past favours, or to garner help and support for the future.
According to local Beijing officials, the down-scaling was due to an imminent political reunion to choose the country's next leadership.

Tet, the Vietnamese Lunar New Year
Tet or Vietnamese Lunar New Year, is the most important and popular holiday and festival in Vietnam. It is the Vietnamese New Year marking the arrival of spring based on the Chinese calendar, a lunisolar calendar.
Tet is celebrated on the same day as Chinese New Year, though exceptions arise due to the one-hour time difference between Hanoi and Beijing resulting in the alternate calculation of the new moon.
In the period leading up to Tet, the country is abuzz with preparations. Guys on motorbikes rush around delivering potted tangerine trees and flowering bushes, the traditional household decorations. People get a little bit stressed out and the elbows get sharper, especially in big cities, where the usual hectic level of traffic becomes almost homicidal. Then a few days before Tet the pace begins to slow down, as thousands of city residents depart for their ancestral home towns in the provinces. Finally on the first day of the new year an abrupt transformation occurs: the streets become quiet, almost deserted. Nearly all shops and restaurants close for three days.
In the major cities, streets are decorated with lights and public festivities are organized which attract many thousands of residents. But for Vietnamese, Tet is mostly a private, family celebration. On the eve of the new year, families gather together and exchange good wishes and gifts of lucky money. In the first three days of the year, the daytime hours are devoted to visiting - houses of relatives on the first day, closest friends and important colleagues on the second day, and everyone else on the third day. Many people also visit pagodas. The evening hours are spent drinking and gambling or chatting, playing, singing karaoke, and enjoying traditional snacks and candy.
