Moore Farms Botanical Garden - America's Heartland
Darla Moore is improving her rural community. After a successful career on Wall Street, Darla returned to South Carolina to provide funding for urban renovations in the small town of Lake City, and establish a world class botanical garden.
'Celebrating Women' features financier, philanthropist Darla Moore
LAKE CITY, SC (WBTW) - She went from Lake City, SC, tobacco fields to Washington's political arena, to Wall Street and then home again.
Financier and philanthropist Darla Moore makes women's history and a difference in her hometown, state, and country.
Moore is a multi-millionaire and could live anywhere in the world. But she chooses her family's original homesite in Lake City, South Carolina, to call home.
That choice is the foundation of her work ethic, success, and giving spirit. The roots are very powerful and have been extremely influential in my life, Moore says. Where I come from, I would say, is why I was able to achieve as much as I have.
Moore describes herself as a lifelong learner. The foundation of anyone's success is their education, she says.
Moore graduated from Lake City High, the University of South Carolina, and then George Washington University. I was 22 years old, I think, when I drove my little car up to Washington and settled into DC for about five or six years and worked at the Republican National Committee. And this would've been during Reagan's first election.
And then I realized pretty quickly after about two campaign cycles that I would starve to death if I didn't get a real job outside of politics, so I went back to business school. Coming from a small, southern town I had fantasies and dreams as a young girl that I was going to seek my fame and fortune somewhere else.
And she did in New York City in banking, specializing in restructuring and bankruptcy takeovers. But it wasn't her first choice. She wanted to be a part of the leverage buyout business dominated by men.
I was female. I was Southern. I didn't have the pedigree and there was not a chance. And there were no women deals. Women were not in that business. There just weren't any. So, I was not allowed to play in that arena. And then by default, I fell into an area which was at the time very much considered the backwater of finance, because you didn't talk about companies that were in trouble.
She saved countless troubled companies, such as Macy's, making her one of the most successful women in the banking industry and the highest-paid woman in banking.
Among the numerous awards and recognitions, she became the first women featured on the cover of Fortune Magazine, the first woman to become a member of Augusta National, and the first in the U.S. to have a business school named after a woman.
Having been in finance and banking, done the things I've done business-wise, has been a marvelous foundation for me to hopefully be better and more thoughtful about the way I do engage in philanthropy now, said Moore.
Philanthropy is now her focus. She contributes millions to South Carolina colleges and other education programs creating opportunities for thousands of students through the Darla Moore School of Business and the Darla Moore Foundation.
And in her hometown of Lake City, she orchestrated the reinvention of this once vibrant farm community with the art competition, Artfields. We said we would invite artists from the 12 southeastern states to come to this little town and compete, and we put up a good bit of money. And that's how Artfields started. And we had no idea whether anybody would show up or not, but they did. And it has become a signature of not only our town but of SC.
She describes the 10-day event as an economic engine that grows annually, making ArtFields just one of countless ways she pays it forward. So many people helped me. I see it as my job and role to help those coming up behind me.
Even on Moore's family property, she considers others. She created the Moore Farms Botanical Garden, a 65-acre garden for people to tour along with educational and social events.
Moore told me she finds joy in helping young people succeed. She shares this advice on how to achieve success: Be open. Be willing to work. Be resilient. Be resilient. You got to be able to get up when you've been knocked down.
Below you will find more of my interview with Moore. It includes her thoughts on the #metoo movement, what inspires her, her biggest influencers, South Carolina's future and what she says are the state's biggest assets, the one outdoor chore that she finds most fulfilling, and the one thing that brings her a lot of joy that you may not know about.
As for Artfields, it runs April 26 through May 4.

OUR TOWN | Lake City
“I think what makes Lake City so unique is when you come to Lake City what you expect is not what you get, you get more”, says Lake City Artfields Consultant, Carla Angus. Over recent years this once desolate town has transformed itself into a thriving economic and cultural scene.
Located just twenty-four miles south of Florence, this remote town is home to some of the most special events in South Carolina, earning it 2018’s ‘Best Small-Town Cultural Scene’ by USA Today.
Local business owner of Mosaic Clothing Leah Norwood says, “I would describe it [Lake City] as a place that has a lot of charm. To me, the reason why it has a lot of charm is because of the people here and there’s just something special about that”.
With this type of reputation it’s hard to not want to see it yourself.
Revitalization of Lake City, SC
Ongoing downtown building renovations and façade repairs spearheaded by the Greater Lake City Community Development Office, plus the creation and continued cultivation of multiple downtown “floral scapes” by Moore Farms Botanical Garden have positively transformed downtown Lake City’s once dated appearance. In Lake City, “revitalization” means more than physical improvements to downtown. With the birth of exciting events such
as ArtFields, Fiesta Fridays, Hometown Holidays, and the upcoming inaugural Rhythm & Q’s BBQ and Live Music Competition, residents and visitors alike appreciate that revitalization is also about a cultural shift from the agricultural prosperity of the past to a vibrant, arts-centered downtown atmosphere.
Darla Moore
Darla Moore was born and raised near Lake City, South Carolina, growing up on the family cotton, soybean and tobacco farm. After graduating from Lake City High School, she attended the University of South Carolina to study political science, later working for the Republican National Committee in Washington. In 1982, Moore gained her MBA from George Washington University and moved to New York City where she became become one of the most successful and highest paid women in the banking industry. She was the first woman featured on the cover of Fortune Magazine, and was listed as one of Fortune’s “50 Most Powerful Women In Business.”
In 1993, Moore began to invest back into her home state. Education became the focal point of her philanthropic efforts. In 1998, she announced a significant donation to the University of South Carolina’s Business School. The new Darla Moore School of Business became the first business school in the United States to be named after a woman.

Darla Moore on the SC Tax Structure
Darla Moore speaks to the Upstate SC chambers of commerce on the need for true reform of our state's tax structure and the establishment of an independent tax review commission.
Marshall Green Roof
From the outside, the Science Building at Marshall University doesn't look that different from its neighbors, but step around back and go up a flight of stairs and you'll see what's so unusual. It's called a Green Roof -- living plants actually growing on top of the roof structure. It's designed to reduce water pollution by reducing storm runoff and this small demonstration project is just the start of something much bigger.
Darla Moore known for breaking gender barriers
Busting into an all-boys club has never been a problem for Darla Moore.
The Wall Street wizard with rich Southern roots made a name for herself in the male-dominated world of finance as executive vice president of one of the largest private investment firms in the United States. She was the first woman featured for a cover story by Fortune magazine in 1997, and at one point, she was the only woman on the board of trustees at her alma mater, the University of South Carolina.
Moore broke another gender barrier Monday when the exclusive Augusta National Golf Club, which hosts the Masters tournament each year, asked her and former Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice to become its first women members.
Augusta National has always captured my imagination, and is one of the most magically beautiful places anywhere in the world, as everyone gets to see during the Masters each April, Moore said in a statement.
Moore, 58, rose to prominence in the 1980s with Chemical Bank, where she became the highest-paid woman in the banking industry. She is vice president of Rainwater Inc., a private investment company founded by her husband, Richard Rainwater, whose net worth was $2.3 billion as of March, according to Forbes magazine.
She has served on a number of corporate, medical and university boards, but she is perhaps best known in South Carolina as a philanthropist. Moore is the top donor to the University of South Carolina, pledging $75 million since 1998, when the business school was named after her. She also donated $10 million to her late father's alma mater, Clemson University.

Wedding Reception at City Art Gallery in Columbia, SC
Check out the blog post with these photos here:
Be sure to get in touch if you need a photographer for your wedding at City Art Gallery!
___________________________________________________________________
One of my favorite reception venues in Columbia is City Art Gallery in the Vista.
First of all, you can't go wrong with Applause Catering. Check out these BBQ Bowl Bites... mmm
And you'll have a hard time finding a better place to put a wedding cake than in front of these hanging lights.
The staircase provides a perfect entrance into the reception for the bride and groom.
One of my favorite things about wedding receptions at city art gallery is the beautiful lighting in the room. I especially love using the lights as a backdrop during the first dances.
The warm Yellow lights provide the perfect skin tones, and the photos even look great in black and white.
The lights also provide the perfect backdrop for guests taking photos anywhere around the room.
If the bride and groom want to take a break from the reception for a few minutes, the second level gallery is a perfect place to get a few extra portraits.
Everyone loves a dance floor, and there is plenty of room for dancing at City Art.
City art gallery is an excellent choice for wedding receptions in Columbia, South Carolina.
