Historic WWII P-520 in Morro Bay
This historic WWII P-520 is arriving to the Morro Bay harbor mouth at 11:15 and will dock at Tideland’s Park City Dock at noon today until they move to their permanent docking location between Great American Fish Company and Harbor Hut, across from the Morro Bay Maritime Museum. As part of Morro Bay’s new Patriot Pride Week Monday – Saturday July 1 – July 5, 2019 the Morro Bay Maritime Museum will be offering tours. These WWII vessels have a local history in Morro Bay and Avila Beach. Volunteers are needed! See info below!
MORRO BAY PATRIOT PRIDE WEEK
Known for its super patriotic bicycle and paddle parades, skate board races, family carnival with dunk tanks, Harbor Department Boat Tours and live music at Tidelands Park on the 4th of July, Morro Bay welcomes veterans and visitors of all ages to celebrate Independence Day all week long. Find free popcorn stands along the Embarcadero, FREE hotdogs for Vets and Otter Pops will be handed out along the harbor to celebrate our local Sea’lebrities. Also, many waterfront restaurants will offer Patriot Pride food and drink specials throughout the week. Plus, special discount offers for Veterans on July 4th.
TOURS: This year the museum has arranged for an 85-foot P-520 to be docked in the Morro Bay harbor between the Great American Fish Company and the Harbor Hut on the north end of the Embarcadero. Tour tickets will be available at the Maritime Museum for $5 - $7.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: The Morro Bay Maritime Museum is looking for volunteers to help with tours and other vital activities before the tours begin. Please email Larry Newland at slonewland@gmail.com if interested.
THE HISTORY OF P-520 CRASH RESCUE BOATS AND THE CENTRAL COAST
The P-520 Boat is a United States Army Air Forces Crash Rescue Boat from WWII, commonly referred to as crash boats since they were intended to retrieve downed pilots and crew. P-520s served on the west coast during WWII and some crash boats were stationed in Morro Bay where they trained infantrymen in landing operations with the Landing Craft Vehicle Personnel (LCVP) or Higgins boats. The P-520s were rescue boats not meant for offensive operations, but did carry some armament including two mountable, operational .50 caliber Browning machine guns in “gun tubs.” Physically the boat is 85-feet long, with a 20-foot beam. Crash boats look very much like the famed PT Boats of WWII often shown on the McHale’s Navy television show during the 1960's.
This particular P-520 arriving in Morro Bay also served a stint at Avila Beach for a period in 1944 and undoubtedly came into Morro Bay during that time. It was built in Southern California and is the only, fully intact, restored US Crash Boat in the world. The P-520 was restored by the current owner and his late father over the course of 10-12 years. The owner offered to let the Morro Bay Maritime Museum use it as an educational and fundraising platform from the week of 4th of July through the Annual Morro Bay Harbor Festival the first weekend of October.

Morro Bay waterfront restaurants
Located on the waterfront in Morro Bay, CA, the Harbor Hut restaurant is world renowned for its views of the harbor and Morro Rock. Both a local hotspot as well as a favorite among visitors, the Harbor Hut is one of the oldest restaurants in Morro Bay; it has been operated and owned by the Leage Family since 1951. Established as a quaint little spot devoted to cooking up the freshest seafood possible, the Harbor Hut quickly became recognized as one of the finest restaurants on the Central Coast for their mesquite broiling and their insatiable quest for the finest ingredients.
Founded by Ralph Tiger Ruse the Harbor Hut was created in order to cater to the increasing number of vacationers coming from the Central Valley, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and from around the globe who looked to explore the amazing stretch of coastline to the north and south of Morro Bay.
Around 1964 Tiger's son in law George Leage began working at the Harbor Hut and eventually took over the daily operations and started managing the restaurant. In 1978 he bought the restaurant from his wife's father keeping the establishment in the family. Subsequently, George's son Troy began working at the Harbor Hut in 1980. It wasn't long before Troy began to manage the daily operations at the Harbor Hut. In 2009 Troy Leage and his wife Heather bought the restaurant from George solidifying the long family tradition for years to come. Morro Bay Waterfront Restaurants
These days the Harbor Hut continues to offer famously fresh dinning in a casual, family friendly setting adjacent to amazing views of the harbor and Morro Rock. With a fantastic array of local as well as freshly sourced seafood, steaks, and other ingredients, the Harbor Hut is certain to please everyone in your family. Sunsets as observed from the dining room are extraordinary and seals, otters and sea birds can be seen from the restaurant on a daily basis. Come on down to the Harbor Hut and discover why this restaurant has been a Central Coast favorite for over 60 years!

#Forgotten #Lost at Sea #1867 #Spooner Cove Ranch #Morro Bay Calif Coast #Forgotten Ships
An important part of the park's history is the Spooner Ranch House that has overlooked a scenic cove since the late 1800s. The ranch was initially leased and built up by Alden B. Spooner — who raised sheep, cows, and hogs — in the 1890s.
On the south bluff of Spooner's Cove they utilized a warehouse with a long chute that led down to a wharf and a loading boom to service coastal steamers.
Rev Spooner went out in his boat and was never seen again...
Look inside this Great Historical House, walk back in time to see the way they lived cooked and sleep.. awesome History on the California Ocean Coast

Morro Bay: The perfect spot to ignite your senses
Morro Bay—a waterfront city in San Luis Obispo county, California—has a long history of fishing and holidaying. It's been a beach destination for vacationers since the early 20th century, for very good reasons.
Get your tastebuds excited on fresh and sustainably caught seafood, like oysters that have been harvested locally for many decades. Breathe in the fresh sea air at the several beaches in and around Morro Bay, and cruise along the coastline in a kayak or on a standup paddleboard.
Wildlife watching (and listening) is easy at the Morro Bay Estuary Natural Reserve, an 800-acre wetland that's home to 250 bird species, and you can spot peregrine falcons at Morro Rock. If you're looking for marine life, there are around 60 sea otters that frequent the Morro Bay harbor, and you'll likely find sea lions sunbathing on the beach in nearby San Simeon.
Wherever you are in Morro Bay or the surrounding SLO CAL spots, your senses will be sure to thank you.
