Police visit Moscow movie theatre showing banned Stalin film
(26 Jan 2018) Police officers have shown up at a Moscow movie theatre that screened a satirical film about Soviet leader Josef Stalin in defiance of an official Russian government ban.
Moscow police didn't immediately declare the purpose of their visit to Pioneer theatre on Friday, but it followed the Russian Culture Ministry's warning that the theatre could face sanctions in line with the law.
The ministry this week rescinded the permit allowing Scottish writer-director Armando Iannucci's The Death of Stalin to be shown in theatres after communists and others criticized the movie as a mockery of Russian history.
I don't think we need to introduce censorship but there should be some kind of personal censorship among journalists and people making films, said Communists Party presidential candidate Pavel Grudinin.
Pioner ignored the decision and has been screening the film since Thursday.
Showing an unlicensed movie is punishable by a fine.
Stalin remains widely admired in Russia, despite his brutal purges that killed millions.

Patriarch's ponds in Moscow. Interesting places on the Patriarch's ponds.
Patriarch's ponds in Moscow. Interesting places on the Patriarch's ponds.
Today our best Moscow travel guide invites you to an exciting excursion – to the most mystical place in Moscow!
How can you get to Patriarchs ponds? Its easy.
You start from Mayakovskaya metro station, walk along Bolshaya Sadovaya street and turn to Malaya Bronnaya street. And just in 20 -50 meters you are here.
We pass Chaikovsky concert hall, the Satire theatre and the Aquarium garden. Here we stop at the first address of our tour, Sadovaya,10.
It is a famous house, where the brilliant Russian writer Mikhail Bulgakov, lived. Today it is a museum of Bulgakov. And also this place is called a bad apartment. Lets go into the yard.
It was planned to install a huge monument here to the heroes of Bugakovs famous Master and Margarita. But later it was decided to confine with small forms.
There are a lot of fascinating and mysterious stores connected with the Patrics, as Moscovites have tenderly named this place.
Since the old days the Patrics are considered to be a bad and enchanted place. Russian writers wrote a lot about it. For example Tolstoy in Anna Karenina and of course Bulgakov in Master and Margarita.
In this very place in Bulgakovs great novel Ann has splitter the oil, and the tram has cut off Berlioses had. But unfortunately there has never been a tram line here.
Its nice to have a shady walk here, by the pond on a hot summer day. And in winter its good to skate on an ice rink.
There is a playground for kids right near the pond. And here is the monument to the fable writer Ivan Krylov, and to his heroes - animals. Kids will like it too. Don't forget to rub the nose of the dog Mos”ka and make a wish!
We ll continue our excursion and walk along Malaya Bronnaya street. Here in the intersection with Kosihinskiy street the first private cafe in Moscowwas located. It was called Margarita.
If you walk further, you ll see the Marco Polo hotel. If you are looking for a place to stay around here, you can see a video clip about this hotel on our Channel.
We turn left and go up the Maliy Kozihinskiy str to Trehprudniy str. There are some residential complexes and good restaurants here…
The famous russian poet Marina Zvetaeva was born and spent her childhood here, on Trehprudniy. Her house №8 has not survived, but on the other side of the street you can see the facade of the house №9, built in 1900 by architect Shekhtel.
There was a typography here. And the first book of Marina Zvetaeva was printed right here.
We are finishing our video tour near the wonderful private house of Shekhtel himself. He was the most popular and glamourous russian architect of the 20th century. One day well make a separate video about his gorgeous mansions in the centre of Moscow. And now we ll say bye bye to you here.

Vsevolod Meyerhold
DISCLAIMER: We do not own any of the footage displayed in this video.
NO COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT IS INTENDED. The Russian-born turn of the century theatre practitioner, Vsevolod Meyerhold, explored theatre as a kinaesthetic spectacle where an actor understood the inner and outer rhythm of the character.
Meyerhold was a contemporary of Stanislavski and Chekhov; his ideas were influenced by the musicality of Chekhov's plays and by the intensive actor training he undertook in the Moscow Arts Theatre under Stanislavski's wing.
Often Meyerhold and Stanislavsky are presented as advocating two vastly opposed systems for training actors, however, both were concerned with releasing the actor's emotional and expressional potential -- only using different means.
Meyerhold wanted to create a new theatre for a new era,
and he was one of the most enthusiastic activists of the new Soviet Theatre. He joined the Bolshevik Party in 1918 and tried to radicalize Russian theatres, effectively nationalizing them under Bolshevik control.
Meyerhold advocated the use of dance and physical movement, which he believed would help with the development of the actor's awareness of their body as this was of prime concern -- thus finding means of expression through actions. He went on to call this style of preparing and performing, biomechanics. Biomechanics is a series of exercises to develop and release the emotional potential of the actor through movement.
THE MASK
Meyerhold believed that the creativity of the actor is shown in his movements, which is enhanced and extended by the use of masks. Meyerhold's mask training was explored through make-up, hair, hats, scarves, eyeglasses as well as Commedia dell' arte masks. Masks therefore enabled the paradoxical nature of theatre to be explored in rehearsals and performance. Most importantly for Meyerhold, the mask forced the actor to externalize his means of communication- to use the body. The shapes generated by the body needed to complement the expression of the face.
JAPANESE INFLUENCES
In the case of using puppetry as a theatrical device, Meyerhold's vision was bold and radical in its strong integration of the graphic component into the production. It helped transcend boundaries of the theatrical form. Meyerhold derived this from Japanese theatre, in particular the Kabuki theatre of Japan, as puppetry was prominent part of their pieces.
GROTESQUE
Meyerhold hated anything predictable and therefore explored deep into the grotesque. It breeds discomfort and it mixes opposites; tragedy and comedy, life and death, beauty and ugliness. Furthermore, it celebrates bizarreness. Meyerhold felt that it challenged the audience's perceptions and he liked how it was naturally mischievous, even satirical. The fact that it stretched the natural to the extent that it became unnatural or stylized, helped him achieve his ideal performances. It reveled in fantasy and mystery, which enhanced Meyerhold's intentions of surprising the audience.

(26 Jan 2018) A Moscow cinema has shown a satirical film about Soviet leader Josef Stalin despite an official ban.
The Culture Ministry rescinded the permit for screening Scottish writer-director Armando Iannucci's 'The Death of Stalin' just two days before its scheduled premiere.
The decision followed criticism from communists and others that the British-French production made a mockery of Russian history.
Pioner Theatre showed the film on Thursday (25JAN2018) as planned, defying the ministry's move.
Cinema-goers who watched the film gave mixed reviews.
Dina Alexandrovna, who attended Stalin's funeral in 1953 and was a staunch supporter of the Soviet dictator as a child, said that the film's content did not offend her and that she disagreed with the government's decision to ban the film.
Another woman, who withheld her name, described the film as terrifying… absolutely, not funny, saying that it showed the realities of the time.
The ministry warned the theatre will face sanctions in line with the law.
Screening the film without a licence is punishable by a fine of up to 100,000 Ruble (USD 1,800) and could lead to the theatre's closure in case of a second violation.

Composed in 1931 by Dimitri Shostakovich, The Bolt – to a book by Viktor Smirnov, is being revived for the first time in more than 70 years.
Shostakovich composed a caustically humourous ballet, blending popular tunes, serious music, circus music, waltzes, marches, tangos. He had imagined his ballet as a joyful lampoon of proletarian drama. His intention was to highlight the eventful and ambiguous relationship existing between proletarian experience and the representation given of it by the Soviet vanguard.
Alexei Ratmansky’s choreography develops into a true marvel, opening with a ballet of giant robots ans ending in a blood red delirious grand parade.

Originally slated for release in Russia on Jan. 25, The Death of Stalin, has just been banned by the Kremlin's Culture Ministry. At the Sundance Film Festival where it was recently screened, British director Armando Iannucci and the film's cast tell Rafael Saakov that they're still hopeful the movies can be shown in the country whose history it portrays.
