RUSSIA: MOSCOW: BOMB SCARE AT RAILWAY STATION
Russian/Nat
Bomb disposal specialists were called to tackle what was believed to be an explosive device at a crowded railway station in Moscow early on Thursday, just 48 hours after a bomb in a shopping centre left over 40 injured.
Paveletsky railway station in the south of the Russian capital was sealed off by heavy security and passengers evacuated as fears of a second blast gripped the city.
Russian interior minister Vladimir Rushailo said it was too early to link the scare to Tuesday's bomb in the Manezh underground shopping centre.
After Tuesday's bomb, Moscow police took no chances on Thursday morning, sending the bomb disposal robot to Paveletsky station straight away.
Commuters arriving in the capital were quickly herded away from the station's platforms.
The Federal Security Service (FSB) sent its bomb disposal team in.
While police and onlookers watched, a specialist in protective gear approached the suspect package.
Initially, explosive experts from Federal Security Service (F-S-B - domestic arm of the former K-G-B), established the device as being an abandoned handgun and smoke canister.
However, Moscow police later confirmed to Russian news agency Interfax that the device contained T-N-T and would be destroyed.
Security in the Russian capital has been beefed-up since the explosion in the Manezh Square shopping centre on Tuesday night.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
We've been afraid every day since 1991. Explosions and murders; I think that people have become accustomed to things like this. I have gotten used to it and carry on with my work. But, yes there are flashes. Bomb threats increase around the first of September, children are more likely to fool around. And the serious ones, well, you know what happened the day before yesterday.
SUPER CAPTION: Colonel Igor Muravlyov, Ministry of Emergency Situations
The explosion in a video game room on Tuesday night injured at least 41 people.
Images of charred victims, bloodstains on the mall's marble floors and shattered glass topped national television newscasts.
Moscow has seen bombings in the past, mostly turf battles between rival criminal gangs, but the capital also has had a growing number of political attacks.
In June 1996, a subway blast killed four people just before the first round of the presidential election.
The next month, two separate bombs planted on buses injured several dozen people.
The perpetrators of the attacks were never found.
This year, bombers have targeted an office of the Federal Security Service, the Interior Ministry headquarters and the Intourist Hotel across the square from the Kremlin.
A bomb planted at a Moscow synagogue in July was discovered just in time to prevent an explosion.
Although a self-proclaimed revolutionary group protesting Western-style consumerism claimed responsibility for Tuesday's mall bombing, Russian officials are still not discounting a link with Chechnya.
Gunmen from the breakaway Caucasian republic recently fought an unsuccessful two week battle with Russian troops as they tried to establish a self-styled Islamic republic in the neighbouring republic of Dagestan.
Interior minister Vladimir Rushailo said nothing was being excluded from the bombing investigation so far.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
I wouldn't hurry to make conclusions. The information coming out about a Chechen link, in my view is premature. I emphasise again. Several days will pass while we carry out an investigation to analyse evidence and victims' statements, to work out who was standing where, all security officials will be questioned, then we'll be able to make some conclusions.

Moscow Preobrazhenka
zbigniewkosc.nl
Preobrazhenka is an area in north eastern Moscow, so called after the building of Preobrazhenskaya (Transfiguration) Church in the middle of the 17th century. This suburb developed a new life in the Soviet era around the 1930s when industrial zones and factories began to replace the former, pretty orchards. The area cannot be described as architecturally remarkable; in fact, Preobrazhenka is extremely ugly and still worse are the more-or-less permanent traffic jams and the never ending noise.
Preobrazhenka is a working class neighbourhood and in its midst is Moscow's largest Farmers Market. Practically all trade is in the hands of the intensely disliked immigrants from the Caucasus and Central Asia. Fresh fruit and vegetables attract a crowd of customers daily; most are elderly, retired folk who live in the dismal, grey housing blocks nearby. On the streets around the market and near the metro station, the old and poverty stricken attempt to sell second hand clothes, shoes, broken household items and salvaged goods from the rubbish of those who are less stricken and more successful. Amongst those attempting to sell, as everywhere in Moscow, lurk the homeless bomzh.Typically alcoholics, bomzhs include migrant workers unable to find any sort of work or anywhere to live as well as layabouts and others who simply end up on the street. The police greatly dislike them. Apart from their drunkenness, their thieving and their fights, they are in permanent breach of the law on registration.

Russia Train Vol 2
The second installment of our trip from Moscow to Saransk. Before getting on the train at Kazanski Vokzal (Казанский вокзал) I suggested getting water or something and something to eat. The video shows my frustration on our nearly 12 hour train ride. Be sure to watch Vol 1 first and then tune in for Vol 3!! In this volume, we aren't really fighting...just frustrated. My wife loved my sarcasm before when we met a few years ago....somehow it is wearing on her patience over the years! haha
