Old Russian song: Yuri Morfessi & Orchester Dobbri - Ey, yamshchik gani ka'k' Yar'u! 1927
Ey, yamshchik, gonee-ka k' Yar'u (Hey, Coachman, Ride To the Yar!) Gypsy song (Music: Y. Morfessi) -- Yuri MORFESSI & Saxophon-Orchester Dobbri (Otto Dobrindt's Band) with Prince Sergey Golitsyn at the Piano, Parlophon 1927 (Germany)
NOTE: Yuri Morfessi (b. 1882 in Athens, Greece -- d. 1949 in Paris) - Russian singer and composer, born in Greece to the lawyer's family. Early in his life, he and his family moved to Odessa in the Russian Empire, where Yuri attended the Greek Commercial College. He also sung in the Orthodox church choir, where his beautiful baritone was discovered and -- despite the lack of any musical education -- he was admitted to Odessa Opera Choir. He gave up studies and in 1903 went to Kiev, where he arranged his own opera troupe Chateau des Fleurs. For some time he also attended professional music lessons, yet lack of the funds made him give them up and sign a contract with the vadeuville theatre Buff in Kiev. In next years he perfomed irregularily in Kiev, Rostov-on-Don and finally in St. Petersburg, where he started performing in the Operetta as well as the Gypsy Theatre. He was so successful, that in 1912 he recorded several Russian and Gypsy romances for Zonophone and Concert Record Gramophone labels. He also opened his own cabaret The Corner, which unfortunately he had to close in Autumn of 1917, when revolutionary unrest started in the city. He travelled away from it as far as back to Odessa in the Black Sea coast, where he got stuck for the whole year 1918, sharing the fate of a handful of Russian artists - such as Nadiezhda Plevitskaya, Isa Kremer or Alexandre Vertinsky, to mention only a few - who managed to leave the northern and central parts of Russia engulfed in the revolution madness, finding temporary shelter in that little Southern enclave, still free from the Bolshevic regime. The outstanding decadent atmosphere among Odessa artists, who had to witness the last days of the tumbling Empire - was immortalized by Russian film director Nikita Mikhalkov in his memorable movie The Slave of Love (1976).
Since 1920, in exile in Paris, Yuri Morfessi performed in white Russian cafes and bars, such as Troika, Caucasus or Hermitage. In 1929 he moved to Warsaw, Poland, where he recorded many Russian songs for Syrena-Electro, Parlophon and Odeon. He also travelled to Riga, Latvija, where he run for some time the cabaret Alhambra . In 1930s he shared his time between Paris, Warsaw, Zagreb and Belgrade in Yougoslavia, where he led together with another Russian singer, Konstatntin Sokolskij -- the bar Kazbek. During the Second World War Morfessi joined the artistic team Russian Case created by the white Russian emigres in Yugoslavia. In 1944, Morfessi was giving concerts in Prague but soon, as the Red Army was moving West, he fled with the retreating German troops, to stop his flee as far as in Paris, where he died a few years later of a heart attack (1949). Morfessi left memoirs Zhizn.Lyubov.Stsena(Life. Love.Theatre), which were published in Paris in 1931.

Title of this song refers to Yar -- one of the most famous restaurants in the Tzarist Russia. Founded in 1826 in Moscow on the busy street Kuznetsky Most, it was frequented by aristocrats, wealthy merchants, artists and writers, including Tolstoy and Chekhov. It was famous for its excellent Gypsy ensamble and a cuisine including traditional Russian dishes (such as the bear's ear). In 1925, that place of glamour and high society entertainment was closed by the Bolshevics. The current Yar is in the Sovietsky Hotel on Leningradsky Prospect. The managers made their best to recreate the atmosphere of the original Yar, with sumptuous Russian Empire interiors and a menu that combines classic Russian dishes with international options, all of the very highest quality. And, similarily to the old days, every night a show program is featured on the Yar's historical stage.

Alla Ossipova: Ulrica, Verdi Un Ballo in Maschera
Alla Ossipova (Telegina) was born in the Arctic, in Norilsk, but spent most of her life in Moscow. Starting from childhood Alla was different -- she was dreaming about becoming an autopsist and hated school for trying to make her conform to some standards.
Alla graduated from Moscow State University as a journalist, but didn't work as such. At the University she started singing, first as a soprano, then she went to study with Natalia Pinevich who discovered her true voice -- dramatic mezzo.
Alla graduated from Moscow University of Arts and then immigrated to Canada together with her husband. Her talent continued to grow with the help of vocal teacher Inna Golsband and Alla started singing on Toronto opera stages -- first at Summer Opera Lyric Theatre, then Opera by Request and Toronto Operetta Theatre.
The combination of big, heavy, dark dramatic contralto with the range of 3 octaves and her fiery temperament was the base on which the talent of Alla Ossipova blossomed. Her last role was Fricka in Die Walküre (Wagner).
Alla's life tragically came to an end on December 25th, 2012 when she just turned 38. Alla couldn't make all her dreams come true, but she will always stay in our hearts.
Studio recording, August 22, 2011
Toronto Operetta Theatre.
