Pikes Peak National Forest - Near Mosquito Pass - FR450 and FR451
Filmed With: Sena Prism at 720p @ 60fps
Trail 450 goes up Loveland Mountain but get's confusing near the top. 450 will turn left but it might be hard to see per the MVUM. Straight ahead is 451 but they do connect and make a loop. Sorry for the end, I thought I might have been on iffy legal trail so I turned off the camera but you will end right back to the the 450/451 split.
You may view this trail on a map, and download GPX files at FR450 and FR451 - Note, you must be logged into your TrailTaker account to download GPX files.

Mosquito Pass, Colorado
Mosquito Pass, CO (13,185 feet) is the highest open mountain pass in the United States.
Named after the town of Mosquito. Supposedly it got its name in a strange way. It seems the miners could not decide on a name so they closed the ledger and went home to think about it. When they next met, the secretary opened the ledger and found a smashed mosquito in the blank spot they had left for the towns name.

Jeeping over Mosquito Pass Colorado July 21 2013
Mosquito Pass Colorado July 21 2013 elevation 13,185 ft (4,019 m) is a high mountain pass in the Mosquito Range of central Colorado in the United States. It lies on the boundary between Lake and Park counties between Leadville (west) and Fairplay (east). It also lies on the divide between the Arkansas and South Platte Rivers, which is the informal demarcation between the northern and southern parts of Colorado east of the Continental Divide.
One of the highest passes in the state, Mosquito Pass can be traversed only on foot or with a proper four-wheel drive (4WD) vehicle. 2WD vehicles will find the road difficult due to the stream crossings and high rocky sections. Even with 4WD, it is typically passable only during the summer months. This is one of those trails that is popular with all offroad enthusiasts because it offers a little bit of everything. It's a great way to connect highway 9 and highway 91 from Alma to Leadville. The scenery is fantastic, including a huge mine in fairly good condition, and this is the highest continuous road in Colorado that goes over a pass.
It used to be a stagecoach road that saw heavy use, and though it was a fairly easy trail in the past it has gotten quite a bit more challenging in recent years. If you start in Alma, the dirt road is easy as you pass through the small town of Park City. The road continues as an easy one with a few bumpy sections as you work your way to the North London Mine. There are a few rocky sections for some fun during the climb.
The mine has lots of room for parking at timberline. It is very well preserved but use caution if you are near it. This is a great spot for lunch and picture taking.
The section past the mine and toward the pass is probably the most difficult. There are rocky sections as you climb to the pass and some places are very eroded. Many rocks can be avoided with careful tire placement, but some areas must be negotiated. An SUV with low clearance may get turned away here.
Continue to climb, and soon you find yourself at the pass and the sign for it that has been there for many, many years. The views are outstanding, and you can look to either side and see many mountain ranges.
There are many switchbacks on the west side of the pass as you work your way down. It is bumpy but not particularly technical compared to the east side. You can look down from the switchbacks to see the top section of the Birdseye Gulch trail.
Pass the Birdseye Gulch trail and enjoy the views of Mountain Lake and Diamond Lake as you descend. Soon the trail goes right by the lakes and it ends at the easy dirt roads near the Diamond Mine. Follow these roads west to the town of Leadville.

Hiking Mosquito Range.
2010RoadTripUSA. Part 16. Hiking Mosquito Range. August 2010. Music by Dorothy Ashby.
The Mosquito Range (elevation approximately 14,000 ft) is a high mountain range in the Rocky Mountains of central Colorado in the United States. The peaks of the range form a ridge running north-south for approximately 40 miles (64 km) from southern Summit County on the north end, then along the boundary between Lake and Park counties. The ranges forms a high barrier separating the headwaters of the Arkansas River near Leadville from South Park and the headwaters of the South Platte River near Fairplay. The highest peak in the range in Mount Lincoln at an elevation of 14,286 ft. Other fourteeners in the range are Mount Bross (14,172 ft), Mount Democrat (14,148 ft), and Mount Sherman (14,036 ft).
The mountains are faulted anticlines formed as part of the Sawatch Uplift during the Laramide orogeny approximately 65 MYA. The mountains were originally contiguous with the higher Sawatch Range to the west but were separated during the formation of the rift valley at the headwaters of the Arkansas River approximately 35 MYA. The range is primarily of granite. The eastern flank of the range along the rim of South Park overlain by Paleozoic and Mesozoic sedimentary rocks. The northern end of the range was glaciated during Pleistocene time, forming u-shaped valleys in the canyons.
The high ridge of the range forms a relatively difficult barrier between South Park and the Arkansas headwaters. Several of the high peaks of the range are prominently visible from the southern side of Fremont Pass along State Highway 91 between Climax and Leadville. The range is not traversed by any major highway, but only in two places by backroads over high passes: Mosquito Pass and Weston Pass. Much of the range is located within the Pike National Forest.
