We drove up the west coast to visit two NZ glaciers: Fox Glacier and Franz Joseph!

This is an informative and leisurely trip to the dynamic face of Fox glacier in New Zealand. It is here that the Fox River emerges from the ice and where ice collapses are often heard and seen. This trip is for people with limited time or for those who would find the walks on the glacier too strenuous.
Although you will not walk on the glacier, your guide will take you to visit the final resting place of ice that has traveled 12 kilometres from the base of the Southern Alps, all the way to the river valley floor. Your guide may take you closer to the ice than the unguided public (if it is safe to do so at the time) and you will have the opportunity to learn the role of the Fox Glacier in shaping its environment.
This two hour trip is reasonably easy going. About one and a half hours is spent walking over terrain at a speed that almost anyone can manage. There is a strong focus on providing you with quality interpretation so you can learn about the glacier and the surrounding environment.
It is sometimes possible to view the cave at the terminal face of the ice from which the Fox River emerges.

Heli Ice Climbing | Fox Glacier | South Island, New Zealand
Rainy weather still made for a great day of ice climbing on Fox Glacier January of 2018. The heli flight in and out offered a spectacular view of the glacier and surrounding waterfalls scattered throughout the landscape. Hearing the ice shift deep within the glacier added to the suspense and excitement as huge chunks of ice were held in place by tiny intact portions rapidly melting away in the rain, ready to give out at any moment. Highly recommended day of adventure.

Fox Glacier - Chancellor Dome Heli Trek - Fox Glacier Guiding 2018
This has to be one of New Zealand’s finest days in the mountains.
It starts with a thrilling flight by helicopter, over magnificent rainforest and ice pinnacles, into the valley of the Fox Glacier. Your helipad is at 1,270 metres (4,000 feet) on Chancellor Shelf, just above historic Chancellor Hut. In season, this area is rich in flowering alpine plants and the mountain antelope, Chamois, can frequently be seen.
From Chancellor Hut, the route ascends through snowgrass basins to a spot where a glorious view of Mt Tasman appears. Here your guide will organise you for a safe ascent of the gully. This gully gives access to a broad ridge and a beautiful snow shelf below the summit of Chancellor Dome. A highlight is the final ascent to the summit at 2,004 metres (6,526 feet). This climb, takes you to the point that affords the best view of the Southern Alps highest peaks and the magnificent snowfields that feed the Fox Glacier. To the west, you see the surf of the Tasman Sea breaking on Gillespies Beach.
After a relaxing lunch you descend to the hut, and fly down the glacier back to Fox Glacier township. As an introduction to mountaineering this trip cannot be surpassed.
Please note: This is a mountain trip with helicopter access, not a helihike on the glacier and is weather dependant.

Fox Glacier - New Zealand
One of New Zealand's most famous glacier, Fox Glacier (Te Moeka o Tuawe) is a 13-kilometre-long temperate maritime glacier located in Westland Tai Poutini National Park on the West Coast of New Zealand's South Island.

Its time to explore the West Coast of New Zealand, to Westland National Park. The long journey from Queenstown took 7 hours. Driving thru rainforests, via Makaora County and Haast Pass before reaching the small town of Fox Glacier, where a community of roughly 200 people lives. Among other places featuring in this slideshow video is Fox Glacier, which is decreasing rapidly due to global warming, and Lake Matheson Walk, a nature walk surrounding the calm Lake Matheson. My activities were limited by the constant rain thruout my stay.
