Many local roads had gone under as well as all of the city's small bridges.
Only one bridge is above the water, preventing the city being cut off from north to south.
Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Sean Fitzgerald said there had been heavy rainfall since yesterday afternoon.
The highest fall was recorded at the Mt Isa mine, where 97.6 millimetres fell in the 24 hours to 9:00am.
That's our highest official report, Mr Fitzgerald said.
But there's been unofficial reports of up to 140 millimetres in the township.

Mt Isa - Meeting some locals
While at the Mt Isa Lookout I walked over to a group of six aboriginals who were showing family guests the sights. I sat down with them and had a yarn and after finding them so interesting asked if they’d make a videos and share their experiences, thoughts and feelings.
Listen to their call for a return to the days of working with pride.
Alexandria was born in Doomadgee near the NT border, being the eighth child in a family of 13 kids – four sisters and eight brothers. Her parents took the family to Mt Isa to get the kids an education.
She said that her husband Ronnie was couldn’t write in English and had limited numeracy and that Ronnie felt uncomfortable about that yet it was clear they loved each other. Both like living in Mt Isa and appreciate the community spirit in the city.
Alexandria said that her husband Ronnie worked from when he was 14, enjoyed working and took great pride in his work.
They shared recent experiences and some events in their lives. Some of the tragedies they initially shared I sensitively did not ask them about in the video.
Life is not easy for many aboriginals yet I feel a duty to honour them with the truth and the opportunity for them to tell their stories.
The previous day in the senate select inquiry hearings I expressed my appreciation to a successful aboriginal businessman Colin Saltmere from Camooweal in Queensland near the Northern Territory border and Father Mick Lowcock, a European from the Catholic Church in Mt Isa – Northwest Queensland Indigenous Catholic Services. I honoured them by not running away from the unpleasant statistics and stories and needs they started to share. Instead I honed in on those issues and gave them the opportunity to share their stories and needs with the inquiry and the senate and Australians.
I agree with Pauline’s longstanding stance of telling the truth and expressing reality on issues. Avoiding the sensitive and unpleasant realities simply condemns aboriginals and indeed all communities to lives of continued trauma.
I noticed in aboriginal communities on Cape York in late 2017 and after I was removed from the senate that aboriginals want the truth because that is the only way to define the problem. Otherwise we will continue to let bureaucrats and sweet talking Greens-Labor and many in the Liberal Party to give aboriginals fake “nice” solutions that will never work.
Avoiding the problems perpetuates the problems – and real aboriginals have had enough of whites and members of the aboriginal “industry” avoiding the issues and perpetuating the misery.
We must discuss the unpleasant realities in order to develop lasting solutions to improve aboriginal lives and northwest communities.
Aboriginals tell me they want a return to the basics. Alf Priestly, an aboriginal man in northern NSW told me that genuine aboriginals have had a gutfull of the “Toyota Dreamers and Statutory Aboriginals” who control aboriginals and control aboriginal communities - they hijack land, hijack taxpayer money, control resources, and prevent aboriginals on the ground getting entitlements and having a fair go, …
The north cannot develop properly until these issues are addressed. That requires courage to define the real issues and needs.

August 10th-17th 2017
Our next destination was Mount Isa, home of mines and the Southern Hemisphere's largest rodeo. We spent 2 days at the rodeo for George's birthday and had a really good weekend. We visited Lake Moondarra after and started modifying our car
to sleep in so we didn't have to put the tent up! After lots of driving into the Northern Territory and to Three Ways, we headed north. We stopped at Mataranka to go for a swim in their thermal pools, which was very refreshing after some time in the outback.
We then went into Katherine and hiked to a lookout over the gorge. Very beautiful! We also stopped in at Edith Falls for a swim. Starting our journey to the Top End with Kakadu National Park, next.

LAWN HILL NATIONAL PARK it's EPIC ... You MUST VISIT// Adels Grove // Mt Isa Rodeo 2019
*** If your caravanning in Australia be prepared for corrugated roads, cause Australia has plenty of them. An if your planning on heading to Adels Grove you will experience them first hand like we did. Not to worry Lawn Hill National Park is well worth the drive, and we would do it all over an over again to experience the beauty of this place***
Ep 7 - After 50k's of rough patchy corrugated roads, we finally arrived @ Adels Grove camping ground, situated only a short drive from Lawn Hill National Park. Lena at first wasn't overly impressed with Adels Grove camp grounds as I had sold her on the idea of a lush and picturesque surround only for us to pull up in a dust bowl of a campground.
However, Lena's tune soon changed when she discovered the beauty of Lawn Hill Gorge and Adels Grove camp grounds
After the dirt road from Gregory to Lawn Hill, we found the van was schmick inside, no dust in sight thanks to our dust proofing of the caravan, but that changed as soon as the first car drove through camp and we had the windows open.
After a good nights sleep back at Adels Grove camp, we ambitiously set the alarms for a pre-sunrise wake-up. Upon hitting snooze for the eighth time in a row and throwing the phone at the wall, we eventually got out of bed, had a quick bowl of cereal and punched it over to Lawn Hill Gorge. We were greeted with an amazing golden hour which made for some spectacular photos and drone footage.
We explored the South Western side of the walking trails all the way down to the Upper Gorge Lookout. After a decent rocky hike, you find yourself gazing back up towards the Island Stack and the aqua water in the gorge below. It definitely is worth the effort if you are chasing a peaceful morning.
The water was a beautiful temperature We could have stayed swimming for hours, but we had tracks to make south to Mt Isa as we had tickets for the 60th Anniversary of the famous Mt Isa Rodeo.

I was stuck in Mt Isa for a weekend and went into town to have a look around and pass some time cause we were bored shitless on the Sunday. It's hard to belive just how close the mine is to the town, it's virtualy right in it.
