Mount Shasta Fishing
--SHASTA DESTINATION MANAGEMENT--
Traveling Hwy 5 to or from Oregon, majestic 14,162 foot Mt Shasta has always been an unmistakable landmark. Word is getting out that the area surrounding Mt Shasta is Americas next great recreational hot spot. This giant of a mountain soars up more than two miles from the conifer forested plains surrounding it. Four small communities surrounding Mt Shasta are located as close as 10 miles from the summit, which literally blocks the sky! Very few of the hundreds of thousands of people passing through actually know about the attractions and wonders found in this little-known area. Visitors that only have a day or two can find plenty to do, but backcountry enthusiasts can spend years exploring all the hidden wonders to be found where Heaven meets Earth.
Mount Shasta City Park, the headwaters of the Sacramento River. It's a beautiful day.

My New House, And Bigfoot In Mt. Shasta City
My New House, And Bigfoot In Mt Shasta City
So, my new house came with Bigfoot in Mt. Shasta City, seriously, I have a Bigfoot living on my property, and I am not sure if this is an interesting thing so far, or if it all may go horribly wrong if I stick around any longer.
Population, well, since I moved to this quaint but weird little town it is now 3,292 3,293. But if you count what else lives out here past the edges of town that walk's upon two legs like you and me, well then, I have no idea what the population of Mt. Shasta City California would be but, I do know you could add a few more digits for sure!
But, before we get into the head count around here, let me tell you a little bit about the Bigfoot in my new yard, and what I might be doing about it...

Run Salmon Run
Sacred Land Film Project Director Toby McLeod participated in this year's Run4Salmon, a two-week prayerful journey to restore McCloud River salmon runs and protect indigenous lifeways.
Led by Winnemem Wintu Chief Caleen Sisk, participants follow the 300-mile migration route of Chinook salmon up the Sacramento River to the frigid waters of Mt. Shasta. Toby used his iPhone to capture some key moments and editor Callie Shanafelt Wong created this new short film. Thanks to Jessica Abbe for the bicycle footage!
Read our sacred site report to learn more about the Winnemem struggle to stop government plans to raise the height of Shasta Dam, protect sacred land and water, and bring attention to the urgent need for salmon habitat restoration. The report is at:

Shasta Caverns Guide | Lake Shasta | California Travel Tips
Veronica Hill of California Travel Tips tours Lake Shasta Caverns ( located just north of Redding, CA, off Interstate 5. Open year-round, tours at Shasta Lake Caverns depart every 30 minutes during the summer.
Our underground adventure begins with a narrated Lake Shasta tour , followed by a scenic bus ride 800 feet up to the North Gray Rocks visitor center. After enjoying stunning views of the lake, our guide Dave Mundt opens the cave's doors, and we begin our journey. Although first known to the Wintu Indians, Shasta Caverns was officially discovered on November 3, 1878 by J.A. Richardson, an employee at the Baird Fish Hatchery. The caverns opened to the public in 1964, and became a National Natural Landmark in 2012. Lake Shasta Caverns are estimated to be roughly 250 million years old, formed by volcanic activity in the Klamath Mountain range. Inside, you'll find a spectacular world of flowstones, stalagtites, stalagmites and fluted columns. Geologists theorize that limestone caverns are formed when ground water and decayed organic materials make its way through the limestone fissures. As carbonic acid was formed, the soft limestone dissolved and created holes that were eventually filled with calcium carbonate. After several hundred years, calcite formations such as stalactites (which hang from above) and stalagmites (formed on the ground) were formed. Our first stop is the Discovery Room, where Richardson first made his descent more than 20 feet above the cave floor. His inscription, written in carbon on November 3, 1878, is still visible in the cave. Next, Dave leads us into the Crystal Room, which is filled with unique and fantastical formations. In the Underground Classroom, also known as the Basement Room, we get to touch some of the cave's flowstone deposits. Our last stop is the cavernous Thompson Room or Cathedral Room, which is the largest and most impressive in the caverns.
The 2-hour Shasta Lake tour ends with a scenic walk down to the visitor center, where we catch our boat back to the parking lot. If you plan on staying in the area, the caverns offer dinner cruises on Shasta Lake!

Visiting M.T Whitney Fish Hatchery
History of Mount Whitney Hatchery
Built in 1917, Mount Whitney hatchery was constructed to serve the southern counties in California. The long haul from Mount Shasta Hatchery was rough on the fish, and a hatchery was needed in the south of the state. Spearheaded by Commissioner M. J. Connell of Los Angeles, the location of the proposed hatchery was hotly contested between different sites. Eventually an agreement was made to build the structure on Oak Creek, near the town of Independence. Local fundraising efforts gathered enough money, about $1,850 for the purchase of 40 acres. The hatchery was built from locally sourced granite and has withstood aging and weather for nearly 100 years.
