Thiokol Spyrte Snow Machine
Vehicle in North Conway, NH
--FROM THE PIECE OF PAPER IN THE BACK WINDOWS--
This Snow Tractor -A Thiokol Spyrte- Is a vehicle long used for transportation on Mount Washington In Winter.
Snow Tractors, equipped with steel grousers ice spikes, and sturdy plow blades, are the only vehicles which have proven themselves capable-with an experienced operator- of negotiating the challenging 8-mile road on the mountain in the winter. The deep and drifted snows, high winds, and cold temperatures so common on the mountain from October into May require such a vehicle for safe trips up and down. And even with a snow tractor and a top-notch operator, even extreme weather conditions, such as temperatures near -50 degree F, winds greater than 100 miles an hour, and visibility near zero in fog and blowing snow- can make safe trips above treeline on Mount Washington impossible.
This Snow Tractor was used for many years by Channel 8 Television when it had its transmitter on the summit of Mount Washington. It was used to bring supplies up the mountain, as well as transport the TV crew up and down on their weekly shift-changes. Mount Washington Observatory crew members would often be transported by this vehicle , too on their weekly trips to and from their summit weather and research station.
In more recent years, this tractor was sold to Mount Washington State Park, and has become a back up vehicle for the Park crew. Today, larger and more powerful snow tractors are typically used on Mount Washington, including the Bombardier used by Mount Washington Observatory staff for their shift-changes and to transport participants in the Observatory's day and overnight educational programs.
