Rampart Reservoir is an amazing Mountain Lake in the shadows of Pikes Peak. A very popular kayaking lake at 9,000' and a short drive from Colorado Springs.
Grand Teton Adventure
Whitewater pioneer and personality Ken Hoeve, World SUP champion Annabel Anderson and friends travel to the Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming where they’ll tackle the class II and III whitewater of the Snake River by stand up paddleboard. Although SUP is commonly known for its flat water and surf contexts, its evolution into whitewater rapids is a recent and uncharted path being blazed by this group of world class paddlers.

2016-04-29 Rafting the Noguera with Mountain Sports in the Gumotex Safari
This run of the Noguera Palaressa was part of a course for raft instructors preparing for the IRF exam. The video show the Llavorsi- Sort section. The participants in the Rafts are mainly Dutch CIOS students and graduates taking this raft course leading up to the IRF2 or IRF3 exam.
The course is run each year by 'Mountain Sports'; an outdoor organization with their home base on camping Ascou la Forge, near Ax-les-Thermes.
About the Gumotex Safari, the boat I paddled in:
The Gumotex Safari “Ducky” is a very versatile inflatable, self-bailing sit-on-top. It is fast enough to paddle calm waters, yet fully able to handle wild water up to class III. Unlike many other inflatable wild water duckies, it has a narrow hull, which requires the paddler to use all normal kayak skills like leaning away from the current and low and high bracing. If you cannot paddle a class III in a normal kayak, you will not be able to do it in this ducky either.
Pro’s and Con’s:
Pro: it is a fun boat!
Pro: it is light, only 12 kg
Pro: it folds up in a small enough package to take it as cabin baggage during air transportation
Pro: it turns very quickly, yet it is faster then the average creek boat (eg 4 km in 40 minutes on a lake)
Pro: the sit is really comfy
Pro: it is very easy to climb back into the boat after a capsize (great safety feature when paddling alone on open water!)
Pro: the material is very strong
Pro: the boat comes with a heavy duty backpack, which also can be used as a waterproof bag
Con: it is pretty hard to fold this backpack correctly, to make it really waterproof.
Pro: it is in-expensive. 500 euro in Germany, 400 euro in the Czech republic and I got mine for a mere 300 euro directly from a Czech web shop.
About rolling: it is harder than in a normal kayak, but it can be done. eg with a long role: youtube.com/watch?v=hOoBe_pSBl0, but I have a friend who can roll it pretty well with a normal screw role.
This boat is sold as the Innova Safari in the states and is there a bit more expensive.
Other video’s on the Safari:
youtube.com/watch?v=fYDvWfd53nY – This shows two Fench heroes (ab)using the Safari for low-volume creeking. It clearly demonstrates how tough the rubber is.
youtube.com/watch?v=69sLldDsux8 – A true Polish hero surfing the Safari in what seems to be a storm. I have no idea how he ever managed to paddle through that surf.
About this video:
This video shows that the Safari also handles well on a class III with quite a bit of volume.Even though the Noguera was a bit low. The only unintentional capsize occured, when I did not lean properly when entering an eddy.
Colorado River Grand Canyon 13 Day Paddle Raft Trip from Lee's Ferry to Lake Mead
The Grand Canyon and Colorado river – with East Coast Kayaking.
The plan was to the win the ballot and put our fate in the hands of the river Gods. Alas, luck was not in our favour and after waiting, unsuccessfully, we bit the bullet and joined a commercial trip. Such is the popularity, these trips are difficult to get on and you can only go down the river once a year.
To call it a trip of lifetime is to undersell it. It was 13 days of absolute magic. Grand vistas, wild rapids, aqua rivers (the Little Colorado is a MUST see for everyone), incredible geology, sensational stars and even the occasional stinging scorpion. Our Guides cooked 5 star meals (yes, truly, we had fillet steak, seared salmon, gin and tonic, bbq ribs), sang to us in ancient side canyons (and played the guitar), educated us about the indigenous tribes and even obliged us with a deliberate flip in an eddie. Our fellow travelers, from all over the world, became our new best friends as we swapped stories, sussed out camp sites and waited for the ‘groover’. And, as the days passed, we became increasingly at home in the Canyon; its wonder and magic filled our veins and its awe left us contemplating our insignificance.
If you’ve never been, then come – you will not regret it. If you been once, then I know you will want to go again. If you been twice, or even 20 times, like one of our Guides, I know you will still want to go again. It is, without a doubt, one of the world’s most amazing journeys.

Colorado River Trip - Trip From Hell 3 - Magic Canoe
This is the next Adventure for Doug and Olga's Channel. We spent six days going down the Colorado River in a canoe. Could have done it in less time, but we wanted plenty of camping time as well. We had two good sunny days and 4 days of rain. It was the 3rd time for me, but the first for Olga!
Enjoy! Happy Trails!

Sailing on Horsetooth Reservoir - In A Colorado Minute (Week 268)
--- ---
On Saturday, we went sailing on Horsetooth Reservoir!
Our friend (and Whiskey's vet) Rachel Erickson kindly invited Scott, GJ, and me to sail on her father John Erickson's boat Besame Mucho. I can't quite remember all my childhood boat rides on the Elbe River, Germany, but this was probably the first time I've gone sailing.
It was amazing and super fun! This was not only due to being on a sailboat on a gorgeous day in the beautiful setting of the Horsetooth Reservoir in the Rocky Mountains Foothills, but mainly because of the very fun, kind and generous company of John, Charleen Wallen, Rachel, her sister Anna Erickson and baby Kali, whose first sailboat ride this was, and sweet dog Queenie (mostly chilling in the cabin).
GJ got to steer most of the time... until he had to rescue my drink in its Wilbur's koozie (a local addition to my koozie collection). It was an even more dramatic water rescue than it looks in the video since we had been heading away from the floating can (yay, koozies!) and John and GJ had to turn the boat around and then sail it to the exact spot where my drink was bobbing on the waves. Of course, the turning around through the wind (going about or tacking) was always exciting as the front sail gets flipped from one side to the other.
Sailing under anchor flag, Wyoming flags and Tibetan prayer flags added a special nuance to the outing.
As you can see in the video, John, Charleen and GJ went out one more time without us. Somebody had to get the BBQ ready...
Of course, it was a challenge to cut all the footage down to only one minute - and I'm sad that I couldn't include more of the people and the views in this version. But for the family at least, I plan to put together a longer version soon.
In a fitting coincidence, Scott and I got our own, much smaller and sail-less, boat yesterday and will take it on its maiden voyage today! This time, Whiskey will get to go as well. Ahoi!
Again, a huge thank you to John and Charleen for taking us along on this fantastic day out!
