Winter scenic drive at Mt Baldy
30 minutes from home is Mount Baldy. There was a storm last night while I was working the night shift. I decided to check it out when i got off this morning. It's a winter wonderland. Mount San Antonio, colloquially referred to as Mount Baldy, is the highest peak of the San Gabriel Mountains, and the highest point in Los Angeles County, California. The peak is within the San Gabriel Mountains National Monument and Angeles National Forest. It is the tallest mountain in the Los Angeles metropolitan area. Mount San Antonio's sometimes snow-capped peaks are visible on clear days and dominate the view of the Los Angeles Basin skyline. The peak is pyramid shaped, with a steep south face (Baldy Bowl) and a shallower north face. The summit is accessible via a number of connecting ridges along hiking trails from the north, east, south and southwest.

This is a very steep but scenic drive along the California State Route 39 in Azusa to Crystal Lake. The CHP shutdown Mt Baldy Road Road yesterday that's why this is a good alternative area for snowplay.

Incredible winter alpine scenery at CA State Highway 39 behind Mt Baldy
California Highway 39 is one intimidating beast. It's a mountain pass with incredible winter scenery. You have no option but to enjoy it's incredible alpine scenery. Highway 39 is located behind Mt Baldy. This drive takes your out of LA and into the Alps. Highway 39 is a meandering road with a pristine surface, views for miles, and a natural lake at the top. There are few places on this globe where you can wake up at, or near, sea level and then drive up an alpine road that takes you up well above 6000 feet. Los Angeles has three such roads: Cloudburst Summit on Angeles Crest Highway, Crystal Lake on Highway 39, and the top of Mt. Baldy Road. Highway 39 separates itself from the others because of the pristine road surface, limited vehicle traffic, and a meandering route that mirrors roads in the Italian Alps.

Nuclear escape tunnel route behind Mt Baldy in case of a nuclear attack in Los Angeles
Located in the San Gabriel Mountains of California, in USA, the Shoemaker Canyon Road is an aborted road. In the early days of the Cold War (1950s and 60s), the road was built (with convict labor), as an intended escape route should Los Angeles be attacked with nuclear weapons.
The road is 4,4 miles long. It’s called the Road to Nowhere, with two abandoned tunnels, chaparral and nice canyon views. The dead-end road was the first phase of a projected 23-year effort to build a 2-lane highway up the formidably steep East Fork San Gabriel River canyon to as far as Angeles Crest Highway. By the time the project was scrapped due to budget cuts and the road was abandoned in 1969. This well-graded dirt road with moderate grade penetrates several miles up the East Fork and then it ends abruptly. Today you can drive the first 1.8 miles of Shoemaker Canyon Road on pavement, then walk or mountain-bike the remaining graded-dirt section, going steadily uphill, to reach a pair of tunnels: 1.8 and 2.6 miles north of the closed gate. In the middle, the tunnels are quite dark, and some people might find it a little un-nerving. Don't do this in the hot midday sun, as there is virtually no shade except for the tunnel passages.

Cascade Canyon - Lapis Lazuli - Mt. Baldy, CA
Patrick Keegan and I prospect for Lapis Lazuli in Cascade Canyon. We make jewelry from the stone that we find and grind. Some friends were asking us if it was an easy hike... so... no, it's not. 2500ft elevation gain in 1 mile. That's 2 Empire State Building climbs by stair... on broken loose ground. Rocks fall from the cliffs above. Patrick has the scar to prove it. If rain were to hit... the canyon has flash floods that strip it clean. Boulders the size of VW's disappear overnight... It is a remote, ever changing, exciting, dangerous canyon. :)
A portion of the profit from the lapis that we find goes to charities and fundraisers. See: LapisMinor.com
Devils Backbone to Mt Baldy Summit, hiking route and description in 4K, Mount San Antonio
Join me on a hiking loop to Mt Baldy via the narrow Devils Backbone in 4K, return via the Ski Hut trail. The loop is about 10 miles long and has an elevation gain of 4000ft. The hike starts at Manker Flat and goes up to Baldy Notch, before continuing on to Devils Backbone. From there I go to the summit and then down the Ski hut trail, which is steeper but shorter, and then looping back to Manker Flat.

Hiking California's Mt. Baldy in the Snow
Mt. Baldy is the tallest mountain in the Los Angeles area reaching 10,064 feet. Join Alice as she hikes to the peak of this mountain after a fresh snowfall. One of the most popular hikes in SoCal for those training for bigger hikes, Mt. Baldy AKA Mount San Antonio is a challenging 10 mile RT hike with more than 3,000 feet of elevation gain. In the winter months it is important to be properly equipped with crampons, hiking poles and ice picks for those hiking the Baldy Bowl.
Did you know there is also a ski area, lodge and chairlift that hikers, and skiers can enjoy year round. ✈
Have you climbed Mt. Baldy or any of the mountains in Southern California. Let me know in the comments.
