Home to all but one of New Zealand's 20 highest peaks, including the highest, and eponymous, Aoraki (Mount Cook), this national park is 700 square kilometres of predictably mountainous terrain and glaciers and, together with the neighbouring Westland Tai Poutini National Park, forms the Te Wahipounamu South Westland World Heritage Site.

Lake Matheson & Surrounds: From Hokitika to Wanaka

This is a short compilation of our drive from Hokitika to Wanaka (~420 km drive), along the western coast of the South Island of New Zealand, stopping at some of the amazing sites along the way. Our first and longest stop was at Lake Matheson, which is famous for mirror-like reflections of Aoraki/Mount Cook and Mount Tasman on calm clear days. We were extremely lucky to have near-perfect reflective conditions, although we arrived just as the wind started to ripple the water (Tip: Get there as early as you can to beat the wind and the crowds). By the time we left, the reflections were gone but lunch in the café was outstanding. The 2.6 km circuit around the Lake should take ~1½ hours return, but double that if you are in photographic overdrive. We then continued our drive south, stopping to walk along the track to the terminal face of Fox Glacier, with Bruce enjoying the chance to sample the glacial waters along the way. It was quite a shock to see just how far this glacier has recently retreated. Other stops along the way are highlighted in the video, culminating in our arrival at Wanaka and an evening walk around the lake. Although we easily drove the distance in the one day, we didn’t get to Wanaka until relatively late and could have easily split the trip across 2 days given all the places to photograph and savour.
