Mt Kaputar Glimpses - Giant Pink Slug Descending. Artist Anna Glynn & biologist Peter Dalmazzo
Artist Anna Glynn & biologist Peter Dalmazzo encounter the giant pink slug, revealing elements of the Snail and Slug Threatened Ecological Community atop Mt Kaputar, NSW, as part of the Art of the Threatened Species Project.
“We had hoped to encounter and record the slug. We were so lucky that the mist and rain lured them out for one brief morning when we had a chance to see them as they climbed trees, feeding on algae and leaving fabulous, patterned chewing trails on the trunks.”
This interdisciplinary team working with art and science spent an incredible time experiencing roiling storms, gale force winds, hail, swirling mist and bright sunshine atop Mt Kaputar, capturing the overwhelming landscape in video, time-lapse, photo and audio field recordings. Their focus, the Mt Kaputar Snail and Slug Threatened Ecological Community, includes all that is on the mountain top, embracing the complete ecosystem including the hero species which is a giant pink slug that occurs nowhere else in the world.

These rocks were formed by the slow and even cooling of volcanic lava, and has caused pentagonal shaped rocks which are similar to that of Giant's Causeway in Northern Island (which is famous on a Led Zeppelin album cover). This park is located in Narrabri, in northern New South Wales, Australia

Sawn Rocks - Mt Kaputar National Park
Narrabri Visitor Information Centre provides a visual overview of Sawn Rocks located in the Mt Kaputar National Park.
Keen to experience an almighty wall of organ pipes without stepping foot inside a church? Then Sawn Rocks, with its towering 40m high pillars is the place to go. Undoubtedly the most iconic reminder of Kaputar’s volcanic past, this basalt rock formation is located in the northern section of Mt Kaputar National Park.

Mount Kaputar National Park is home to Pink Slugs and Sawn Rocks. Located 570 km northwest of Sydney it is a magical paradise to escape to, up to 10 degrees Celsius cooler than the surrounding lowlands. Plenty of great bushwalks for day trips and stunning vistas to sit back and enjoy. In this video I explore the Doug sky lookout, Dawsons Spring, Eckfords lookout and Sawn Rocks.

We drove from north from Dubbo up to the Warrumbungle National Park where we saw some great scenery, a fascinating scale model of the solar system and lots of kangaroos! After that we headed to Narrabri where the Mt Kaputar National Park is just spectacular. Go there!

I managed to capture a little bit of footage on top of Mount Kaputar in 2014. The first time I had ever seen snow so close to Narrabri.

Mt Kaputar Glimpses Giant Pink Slug Time Lapse Peter Dalmazzo & Anna Glynn
In 2019 artist Anna Glynn & biologist Peter Dalmazzo captured time-lapse video of the giant pink slug from their second research stay within the Snail and Slug Threatened Ecological Community atop Mt Kaputar, NSW, as part of the Art of the Threatened Species Project.
Late one afternoon it started raining and giant pink slugs started to emerge from rock crevices and other hiding places to climb the Eucalyptus trees before nightfall. Overnight, 85 mm of rain fell on the mountaintop and many slugs spent the night feasting in the soaked treetops. By dawn they had started their descent, feeding on plant material on the surfaces of tree trunks and rocks along the way. As the sun broke through the slugs disappeared into their hiding places to wait for another rainy night.”
