This bucket list ride has been on my mind ever since I watched Brian Kennedy aka BKXC make his way down the 3+ hour ride trailing around Mt Lowe in Altadena. What's brilliant is I get to ride it with the same YouTuber that took Brian down here, Tommy Huynh.
We hitched the $20 shuttle ride from Mt Wilson MTB Adventures to the top of the road. There is still a bit of climbing to do after the shuttle but it's not that far to get to the start of the descent, which goes on for miles.

Echo Mountain & Inspiration Point | FULL HIKE - Los Angeles 2018
On this day (May 2018), I explored/hiked Echo Mountain and Inspiration Point in Los Angeles, California. Echo Mountain Trail ends at the foundation of the resort complex was known as the White City. The remaining machinery left behind added a history and scope to the setting. Still standing is the landing and steps where guests would exit White Chariots, the tramcars that delivered them from Rubio Canyon to Echo Mountain. In an era before cell phones and walkie-talkies, the Echo Phone could be used to shout messages across the mountain. A series of these metal megaphones were used to communicate back and forth to the resort. This fine spot for a resort was chosen by Professor Lowe and guests from around the world would come visit, but is now free to hikers. If you decide to go further, follow the path of Inspiration Point and you will not be disappointed.

The Enchanted Forest - Trail to the Mansion and Tunnel
This is the Enchanted Forest in Altadena, CA...near Pasadena.
[UPDATE! February 23rd, 2013: My $5 are gone...again, and they didn't take the time to email me...again. Also, ppl have now tagged the inside of the mine...due to such disrespect, I will no longer be leaving treasure there anymore]
[UPDATE! January 12th, 2013: I put another $5 in the tunnel, whoever took the last one didn't email me...grrr]
[UPDATE! December 8th, 2012: I put another $5 in the tunnel, but I put this one waaay in the back this time. FYI, the homeless man still lives in the first tunnel...do not disturb him!]
[UPDATE! September 29th, 2012: I was filming the moon and stars from 2:00am - 5:30am. At exactly 3:33am all the coyotes starting howling, the most horrible noise you ever want to hear in the forest when you're alone. Lesson learned: never go alone!]
[UPDATE! July 7th, 2012: As we walked by McNally Tunnel again, the man was still living inside. Please be careful everyone when crossing the tunnel. This time, we didn't say anything to the man and he didn't say anything to us, so just LEAVE HIM ALONE!]
[UPDATE! June 30th, 2012: As we came up to the McNally Tunnel (5:08) my friend looked inside and saw a man living in there. My friend said, There's a hobo in the tunnel, he repeated it again, then we heard a loud bellow of a man's voice yell I'm not a hobo!. We ran as fast as we could and crossed the river, the man came out of the cave and yelled Say that to my face you little punk!. Be very careful when you come across this tunnel and please, don't call him a hobo.]
[UPDATE! April 7th, 2012: I put another $5 in the tunnel, happy hunting!]
[UPDATE! March 12th, 2012: The treasure has been found! =) Late night Temple City High School adventurers Rudy, Nasser, Joseph, Angel, Kim and Angela made the journey into the tunnel and came out winners. Congratulations!]
[UPDATE! March 3rd, 2012: The treasure was no where to be found, it may have washed away = so I put another treasure, this time I wedged it between some rocks, however the plastic bag is still visible =) happy hunting!]

Hike to Mt Lowe Trail camp with the Los Angeles Backpackers Meetup group. We followed the Sam Merrill trail to Echo Mt. junction and then took the old Mt. Lowe railroad bed to the Mt Lowe Trail camp in Angeles National Forrest which is at an elevation of 4500 feet. 10.5 miles roundtrip with amazing views and interesting ruins from buildings constructed in the 1890s.
Shot with a GoPro Hero3:Black Edition at 1080p 60fps. Special thanks to Donald Mohr for the DX7 samples for my channel's intro!

Where's The Best Place to Hike in Los Angeles, California? Echo Mountain in Altadena
Hike. Mountains. Ruins. Trails. These are the things that you will see in this 30 second video feature on the best hiking spots in Los Angeles, California, USA.
A lot of people love to hike especially if there’s a breathtaking view that awaits. In southern California alone, there are endless spots to go hiking. One may even be surprised to know that a few miles from where you live will be a nice hiking trail (parks.ca.gov).
November 17 is observed as the National Take a Hike Day (nationalcalendar.com). According to the website, there are over 60,000 miles of trails in the National Trail System across the 50 US states. That means that there are a lot of hiking opportunities available and one good place for a hike is the Echo Mountain located at the end of north Lake Avenue in Altadena, California.
Echo Mountain is popular with residents of Altadena, Pasadena and other surrounding cities. But to other Angelenos who have not been into this spot, Echo Mountain is a prominent mass of land overlooking into a lowland of the San Gabriel Mountains which is part of the Angeles National Forest in the county of Los Angeles (wikipedia.org).
Echo Mountain is where the Echo Mountain House used to sit. A 70-room Victorian hotel wherein hotel guests would visit using the Mount Lowe Railway - it was the third in a series of scenic mountain railroads in America (wikipedia.org). Several disasters struck during its existence like fires, electrical storms and flash floods. Today, only ruins of the hotel and parts of the Mount Lowe Railway remain making this place as a historical landmark.
To hike and see the ruins, you may park your car in the streets along north Lake Ave and east Loma Alta Drive but be mindful of the street signs. Hike is approximately five to six miles roundtrip with 1,500 feet of elevation. Remember, take a bottle of water with you and maybe some snacks because they have picnic areas on top. Hiking is more fun with family and friends so make sure you invite everyone. Hike for a healthy heart! #hiking #losangeles #california

This snake was relaxing on the warm dirt of the Sam Merrill hiking trail up to Echo Mountain near Altadena and Pasadena, CA. I believe it is some sort of gopher snake, but feel free to comment if you think otherwise.
California Dreamin': MY HIKE TO INSPIRATION POINT

As much as I try to seek out inspiration, it usually just ends up finding me. Although, I know that if I give myself space just to be, without forcing thoughts and expectations it flows more easily.
When I arrived to Santa Barbara and saw there was a hiking trail to a place called Inspiration Point, I knew I had to experience it. So, after some adventures at the Botanic Gardens (including getting a little lost) I made my way up the mountains of California to see what inspiration I could find!

Thunder Mountain & Telegraph Peak (San Bernardino County, CA) Review
We took the ski lift up knowing we would do two hikes, saving us about an hour on fire road. A slow incline up, nothing too difficult. We did see a few dogs on the path. Heading up to Telegraph Peak you have many switch backs and at the top you will have panoramic views of all the neighboring mountains.
*Adventure pass required to park.

ride through the Pasadena mountains
Just got a new camera I wanted to try out
Midnight Hike at Cobb Estate in Pasadena, CA
A group of friends and I decided to hike up Sam Merrill Trail, lovingly referred to as The Haunted Forest trail. We hiked and told scary stories.
Bridge To Nowhere (Azusa, CA) Review
Bridge To Nowhere is a very casual hike with large parts of shade and manageable terrain, which has made it a very popular hike to do. The trail begins with large paths that are easy to follow. As you get closer to the middle of the hike you will be crossing the river, so prepare to get your feet wet. Bring hiking boots or water shoes and a towel. You cross the river between 4 to 6 times. There will be multiple ways to get to the bridge and if you feel lost just follow along the river until see the trail open up again. On land there are some yucca plants that can poke you, most are cut, so be mindful. Once on the bridge, you can hang out and watch as people bungee jump thanks to Bungee America. If you are looking to cool off there is a small and steep trail past the bridge where you can relax in the
water, where many enjoy a picnic.
*Adventure pass for parking.
Distance: 10 miles round trip
Elevation gain: 900 feet
Estimated round trip time: 3 - 4 hours
Hikers: Han, Nick, Matt, and Mike
Our difficulty rating: G
Notes: The trail is dog friendly. Bring shoes you plan on getting wet and a towel to dry your feet.

Mountain Biking El Prieto Trail | Full Length | Los Angeles, CA
My brother and I mountain biking the El Prieto trail in La Canada, CA located near NASA JPL in the El Prieto Canyon. This is the first time either of us have ever ridden this trail and we also have not mountain biked California that much since we just moved out to Los Angeles, CA. Therefore, we took it slow to get a feeling for the trail and even took a few wrong turns (edited out). A big thanks goes out to the three mountain bikers that we met at the trailhead and gave us some pointers on the trail. They even waited for us at the bottom to make sure we made it out OK. We appreciate it!
Check out my mountain biking playlist:
Be sure to go down the fire road from the main parking lot and stay right at sign indicating Brown Mountain Trail or something like that. You will go through a residential area. From there it's a long trek up the fire road. We passed an old NASA satellite tracking station on the way up. The electrical engineer in me (and space geek/ham radio op) had to stop and take a look! The Brown Mountain Truck Trail is a fast downhill trail that takes you right to El Prieto. As shown in the video, El Prieto is pretty easy to spot.
Watch out for hikers. From now on I am thinking of riding with bells so I don't scare anyone and get in a crash with hikers. Looking forward to learning how to use the GoPro camera better and getting used to the SoCal mountain biking culture!

Snake on hiking trail near Pasadena and Altadena, CA
This snake was sitting in the shade on the Sam Merrill hiking trail up to Echo Mountain near Altadena and Pasadena, CA. I'm not sure what type of snake it is...feel free to comment.
Rattlesnake on the trail!
We encountered this rattlesnake on the trail from Echo Mountain to Inspiration Point in Pasadena, CA. It's hard to realize just how loud this rattle was but it completely drown out all the conversations we were having while the video was being shot.
