Mount Roosevelt Friendship Tower Virtual Tour
2011. Travel back in time to the era of Theodore Roosevelt and Seth Bullock while viewing a virtual tour of the Mount Roosevelt Friendship Tower. The famous Deadwood Sheriff, Seth Bullock, built the Tower in 1919 as a dedication to President Theodore Roosevelt, his close friend of many years. Bullock wanted to create a memorial of his friend's life and a place where people could view wide open spaces that both Bullock and Roosevelt had become so fond of during their lives. In 1919, the Society of Black Hills Pioneers provided financial support to build the Tower and in 1966, the Society donated the Tower to the United States Forest Service. In 2005, the Tower was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This year marks the 92nd anniversary of Friendship Tower.
Mount Roosevelt, Deadwood SD
Close to Deadwood, Mt Roosevelt is a short scenic hike.
It has views of Bear Butte to the east, Bear Lodge mountains to the north west, North Dakota to the North, and Terry Peak, Custer Peak, Harney Peak, Lead and Deadwood to the south. Just a great hike in the Black Hills National Forest.
It is also home to the Friendship Monument. conceived by Seth Bullock and built by the Society of Black Hills Pioneers as a memorial for Theodore Roosevelt. Dedicated July 4th, 1919.
Directions from Deadwood, Take 85 North for about a mile, turn left on Mt Roosevlet Rd(the turn for Lodge at Deadwood). Follow Mt Roosevelt road until you get there. I don't think the road is maintained in the winter, so it is a fair weather drive.

Roosevelt & Bullock in Deadwood at the 90th Anniversary of the Friendship Tower: Part Two
The U.S. Forest Service staged a 90th anniversary observance at the Friendship Tower on Mount Roosevelt at noon on July 2, 2009. The tower was dedicated on July 4, 1919 in a celebration attended by Seth Bullock himself, just a few months before his death. Bullock, a prominent Deadwood businessman and former lawman, arranged for the tower's construction to honor the memory of his friend Theodore Roosevelt, who had just recently died. The monument was the first to be dedicated to Roosevelt after his death. Bullock and Roosevelt were good friends for many years before the latter was elected president, and Bullock arranged for a number of cowboys from the Dakotas to ride in Roosevelt's inaugeral parade. Roosevelt later appointed Bullock as the first supervisor of what would become the Black Hills National Forest. Bullock and Roosevelt reenactors spoke at the observance today, which was nearly rained out.

Mount Rushmore National Memorial, Keystone, South Dakota, United States, North America
The Mount Rushmore National Memorial is a sculpture carved into the granite face of Mount Rushmore near Keystone, South Dakota, in the United States. Sculpted by Danish-American Gutzon Borglum and his son, Lincoln Borglum, Mount Rushmore features 60-foot (18 m) sculptures of the heads of four United States presidents: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln. The entire memorial covers 1,278.45 acres (5.17 km2) and is 5,725 feet (1,745 m) above sea level. The tallest mountain in the region is Harney Peak (7,242 ft or 2,207 m). South Dakota historian Doane Robinson is credited with conceiving the idea of carving the likenesses of famous people into the Black Hills region of South Dakota in order to promote tourism in the region. Robinson's initial idea was to sculpt the Needles; however, Gutzon Borglum rejected the Needles site because of the poor quality of the granite and strong opposition from environmentalists and Native American groups. They settled on the Mount Rushmore location, which also has the advantage of facing southeast for maximum sun exposure. Robinson wanted it to feature western heroes like Lewis and Clark, Red Cloud and Buffalo Bill Cody but Borglum decided the sculpture should have a more national focus, and chose the four presidents whose likenesses would be carved into the mountain. After securing federal funding, construction on the memorial began in 1927, and the presidents' faces were completed between 1934 and 1939. Upon Gutzon Borglum's death in March 1941, his son Lincoln Borglum took over construction. Although the initial concept called for each president to be depicted from head to waist, lack of funding forced construction to end in late October 1941. The U.S. National Park Service took control of the memorial in 1933, while it was still under construction, and has managed the memorial to the present day. It attracts nearly three million people annually. Tourism is South Dakota's second-largest industry, and Mount Rushmore is the state's top tourist attraction. The memorial hosts nearly three million visitors a year. In 2012, 2,185,447 people visited the park. The site attracts many visitors over the week of the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. The flora and fauna of Mount Rushmore are similar to those of the rest of the Black Hills region of South Dakota. Birds including the turkey vulture, bald eagle, hawk, and meadowlark fly around Mount Rushmore, occasionally making nesting spots in the ledges of the mountain. Smaller birds, including songbirds, nuthatches, and woodpeckers, inhabit the surrounding pine forests. Terrestrial mammals include the mouse, least chipmunk, red squirrel, skunk, porcupine, raccoon, beaver, badger, coyote, bighorn sheep, bobcat, elk, mule deer, yellow-bellied marmot, and American bison. The striped chorus frog, western chorus frog, and northern leopard frog also inhabit the area. In addition, several species of snakes inhabit the region. Grizzly Bear Brook and Starling Basin Brook, the two streams in the memorial, support fish such as the longnose dace and the brook trout. Mountain goats are not indigenous to the area but can also be found here. They are descended from goats which were a gift from Canada to Custer State Park in 1924 but later escaped. At lower elevations, coniferous trees, mainly the Ponderosa pine, surround most of the monument, providing shade from the sun. Other trees include the bur oak, the Black Hills spruce, and the cottonwood. Nine species of shrubs grow near Mount Rushmore. There is also a wide variety of wildflowers, including especially the snapdragon, sunflower, and violet. Towards higher elevations, plant life becomes sparser. However, only approximately five percent of the plant species found in the Black Hills are indigenous to the region. The area receives about 18 inches (460 mm) of precipitation on average per year, enough to support abundant animal and plant life. Trees and other plants help to control surface runoff. Dikes, seeps, and springs help to dam up water that is flowing downhill, providing watering spots for animals. In addition, stones like sandstone and limestone help to hold groundwater, creating aquifers. Through the study of tree rings, it has been determined that forest fires have occurred in the Ponderosa forests surrounding Mount Rushmore around every 27 years based on evidence of fire scars found within tree core samples. Large conflagrations are not common. Most events have been ground fires that serve to clear forest debris. The area is a climax community. Recent pine beetle infestations have threatened the forest. Mount Rushmore is inside a USDA Plant Hardiness Zone of 5a, meaning certain plant life in the area can withstand a low temperature of no more than −20 °F (−29 °C). The two wettest months of the year are May and June.

Perhaps the most unmistakably American landmark is Mount Rushmore, a national memorial located in South Dakota. Constructed in the early 20th century, Mount Rushmore depicts the faces of four former American presidents, each of which is carved and blasted from the side of a rock face. Visitors can admire the larger-than-life faces of Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt. The short Presidential Trail at the base of Mount Rushmore provides better views and an interesting perspective on the landmark.
