Mount Aso, Kumamoto - 阿蘇山 - Japan As It Truly Is
Not many places you can peer down a live volcano. Mount Aso is Japan's biggest active volcano and like being on the moon.
Mt. Aso or Aso-san is one of Kyushu's most popular places - in addition to the crater spewing out steam and poisonous sulfuric gases, there is Kusasenri, the bottom of a mammoth old crater that offers horseback riding, and Komezuka, an 80m hill and once a volcano itself.
The caldera is one of the world's largest (450 sq. km) and most active 90,000-300,000 years ago. Its lava once flowed over half of the whole island of Kyushu. Even today, you can still see the remains of the violent activity. And while huge molten rocks may not be raining down on you, the large numbers of emergency concrete bunkers are there for a good reason.
This footage was taken just before the late spring rains turn most of the lower area a huge emerald green. Seeing the volcano is always hit-and-miss...one day it's open, the next it may be closed due to higher poisonous gas emissions. ALWAYS check before going to see if it's open (and hope in transit it stays open).
UPDATE: After 4 years, the Mt. Aso crater has been opened again, but always check the volcano status before going to avoid a wasted trip. Recently there has been some activity prompting its closure again.

A visit to the Mount Aso Volcano and caldera before the eruption in 2016 and when the ropeway was in function. Also visit to the Aso Volcano Museum and the ropeway entrance building as well as the crater and caldera viewing point.

Went on a lovely winter roadtrip with my family through central Kyushu region!
Covered over 800kms in 5 days, really looking forward to exploring more parts of Japan. Road trips are definitely the best way to see the sights.

Travel: Japan Kyushu Day 3 - Kumamoto Mt Aso, Takachiho Gorge, Kurokawa Onsen
From Kumamoto, we rented a car for our road trip to first
Mt Aso (too bad we cant go up because of eruption warning),
then Kurokawa Onsen for onsen hopping and visited one of the special onsen - cave onsen.
After that we spent one night at an Onsen Hotel with private onsen in our room. We had a great dinner and breakfast at the hotel.
The next morning we drive to Takachiho Gorge for boat riding before heading back to Kumamoto to return the car. Before we returned the car we stopped by to visit the famous Kumamoto Castle (Top three castle in Japan) that become ruins after 2016 earthquake. The restoration process of the castle still ongoing and we heard it might take as long as 10 years for full restoration.

HIKING AN ACTIVE VOLCANO | Mt. Aso, Kumamoto
Mt. Aso is the largest active volcano in Japan and I want to hike it!
Located in the middle of Kyushu, it's one of those things I wanted to see since I first found out I was moving here. Unfortunately, Aso is a little unpredictable. It will close suddenly if deemed unsafe - volcano problems.
The area right by the crater was closed the day I went there. It really sucked because it had JUST opened again after the eruption in late 2016. Oh well. I'll try again some other time. The perks of living close by.

Daikanbo Lookout, Aso Kumamoto in 4K - 大観峰●阿蘇 熊本 - Japan As It Truly Is
The Daikanbo Lookout over the Mt. Aso region is one of Japan's greatest sights, looking over the world's biggest caldera.
The 936m high view of Daikanbo (大観峰) in Aso, Kumamoto gives you a commanding view of the area as well as the Nehanzo or Nirvana Buddha, since the mountain contours on the horizon look like a reclining Buddha asleep.
Unfortunately there is no train or public bus access, so renting a car is the most convenient way to reach Daikanbo. Parking is free and you will also find a restaurant and gift shop at the peak. Of course, make sure the weather is clear before going there.
