Butterfly Trail Hike; Mount Lemmon, AZ to plane crash site-June 24, 2009
This wondrous alpine hike is located near the top of MT Lemmon in Tucson, AZ's Catalina Mountains. In this video you'll get a good look at wildlife in the area and the amazing vistas! The trails as of this July 2009 hike, were in fantastic shape! About midway through the hike, you can take a side hike to the site of a 1957 military jet crash where airplane parts are still scattered. After the hike it's wise to head to the small village of Summerhave and visit The MT Lemmon Cookie Cabin, where you can enjoy a massive homemade cookie, or some mighty fine pizza!
NOTE: Date in video say July; it should be June!

Ask an Expert: The Public Observatory
Curator David DeVorkin and astronomy educators, Erin Braswell, Katie Moore, and Shelley Witte discuss the Public Observatory at the National Air and Space Museum. This informal gallery talk was recorded on February 3, 2011 as part of the National Air and Space Museum's Ask an Expert lecture series.
Ask an Expert lectures are presented weekly at the National Air and Space Museum in Washington, DC and biweekly at the Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, VA. For more information & schedule, see

MTSU Observatory Invites Public to View Transit of Venus
MTSU Department of Physics and Astronomy professor Eric Klumpe led a special Transit of Venus Star Party on June 5 at the observatory next to Old Main Circle.
Transits occur when a planet crosses between Earth and the sun. Only Mercury and Venus, which are closer to the sun than Earth, can experience this alignment. In this transit, Venus looked like a black dot going across the face of the sun for about a six-hour period. The Transit of Venus will not occur again until 2117.
Klumpe, associate professor Chuck Higgins and MTSU Astronomy Club students set up telescopes for viewing and discussion about the transit.
The Dee Wright Observatory And Viewing Tubes
The Dee Wright Observatory, located at the summit of McKenzie Pass in the Cascade Mountains of Oregon, is an observation structure consisting of a number of “viewing tubes”, among other things. Built of lava stones, and located in the midst of a large lava flow, it resembles a tiny mediaeval castle.
The observatory has a number of small windows cut on the sides through which views can have exceptional views of a numerous Cascade peaks — Mount Jefferson, Cache Mountain, Dugout Butte, Black Butte, Bluegrass Butte, Black Crater, North Sister, Middle Sister, Little Brother (and ridge west), Condon Butte, Scott Mountain, South Belknap Cone, Belknap Crater, Little Belknap, and Mount Washington. If weather permits, you can even see Mount Hood, Bald Peter, Green Ridge, and Horsepasture Mountain.
Aside from the viewing windows, the observatory has a 36 inch diameter, bronze azimuth-like peak finder to help visitors locate nearby geologic features as well as the surrounding mountain peaks.
The observatory was built during the Great Depression by a Civilian Conservation Corps crew, and named after the construction crew’s foreman who had died the previous year after serving 24 years as a Forest Service packer and crew foreman at Camp Belknap.

NEWSLINE: Gaithersburg Latitude Observatory Telescope Site Visit
For one day in October, the historic telescope was reunited with the observatory site for the first time since 1982.
In 1899 the Gaithersburg Latitude Observatory was built as part of an international project to measure the earth's wobble on its polar axis.
The Gaithersburg Observatory and five others in Japan, Italy, Russia and the United States gathered information that is still used by scientists today, along with information obtained from satellites, to determine polar motion; the size, shape, and physical properties of the earth; and to aid the space program through the precise navigational patterns of orbiting satellites.
The Gaithersburg station operated until 1982 when computerization rendered the manual observation obsolete.
The City now has the original Zenith telescope used at the observatory starting in 1899. It was one of the four made by Julius Wanschaff in Berlin for the International Geodetic Association Latitude Service.
