Muiden, Muiderslot and Fort Pampus | The Netherlands #1
In this first episode of the series 'History on Tracks', I visit the Muiderslot. This castle was originally built in the 13th century by Floris V, count of Holland, to control a key (trade)route to the city of Utrecht. After visiting the Muiderslot, I continue to the island Pampus, which was fortified in the 19th century to protect the city of Amsterdam from naval attacks.

Muiderslot is just what you would imagine a 17th century castle to look like - complete with a moats, towers, bridges, murder holes and examples of knights' armor and weapons. But there is also more to explore: interactive games for kids, a beautiful outdoor garden and the nearby Muiden harbor. We visited during Castle Days when the castle also had special exhibitions and shows. We recommend taking the ferry to get there from Amsterdam East. It takes a bit longer, but you get to cruise the Ijsselmeer, stop at Pampus Island and get a majestic view of the castle as you enter the harbor.

Het Muiderslot is een nog in goede staat verkerend middeleeuws kasteel in het Noord-Hollandse Muiden, gebouwd rond 1285, in ere hersteld vanaf 1370 en een Rijksmuseum sinds 1878. De eerste restauratie begon in 1895, de tweede, waarbij ook de directe omgeving in 17e-eeuwse staat werd teruggebracht, in 1955. In 1999 begon de laatste restauratie, waarbij de vesting en de groentetuin aan de beurt kwamen. Volgens historicus Maarten van Rossem ziet het 'sprookjeskasteel' er uit zoals een kasteel eruit moet zien: 'Ook Walt Disney zou er zeer tevreden over zijn geweest'.
Muiden Castle is a castle in the Netherlands, located at the mouth of the Vecht river, some 15 kilometers southeast of Amsterdam, in Muiden, where it flows into what used to be the Zuiderzee. It is one of the better known castles in the Netherlands and featured in many television shows set in the Middle Ages.

Onder de rook van Amsterdam ligt al ruim 700 jaar het stoere Muiderslot, omringd door water en kasteeltuinen. Het is een van de oudste én best bewaarde kastelen van Nederland. Gebouwd met één doel: de verdediging. Het kasteel uit 1285 en kent een lange en roerige geschiedenis.

Muiderslot - Netherlands
Around 1280 Floris V built the Muiderslot (Castle of Muiden) video clip) at the estuary of river Vecht and the former Zuiderzee (now IJsselmeer - muiden means rivermouth). He gained command over an area that used to be part of the See of Utrecht. The River Vecht was the trade route to the city of Utrecht, one of the most important trade towns of that time. The castle was used to enforce a toll on the traders and housed the baillif (deputy) of the Count. See also:
