Muley Point - Drone Footage & Barbecue - Utah - LeAw in the USA //Ep.31
We are living the American dream driving the Historic Route 66 from Chicago to Santa Monica but we are doing some detours to visit some places we like.
In this 31st episode, after driving up the Moki Dugway we decide to visit and have a nice barbecue for lunch at Muley Point. Enjoy the ride with us! ;)
Muley Point is a remote cliff and scenic overlook in southern Utah near Mexican Hat in San Juan County, Utah. The view provides panoramic vistas of the desert landscape of southern Utah (Valley of the Gods) and northern Arizona. Monument Valley is visible in the distance while the San Juan River cuts into the canyon below.
Located at the end of a five-mile gravel road off Rte. 261, Muley Point is 25 miles (40 km) south of Natural Bridges National Monument and 20 miles (32 km) north of the Arizona border. Its geographical coordinates are 37°13′59″N 109°59′36″W. It lies at an elevation of 6,230 feet / 1,899 meters.
(Moki Dugway) State Route 261 is a state highway located entirely within south-central San Juan County, Utah. It runs 34 miles (55 km) north, from the junction of U.S. Route 163 (3 miles (4.8 km) north of Mexican Hat), to the junction with State Route 95, just east of Natural Bridges National Monument.
The highway is part of the Utah section of the Trail of the Ancients, a National Scenic Byway. It includes steep switchbacks as it traverses the Moki Dugway.
From its southern terminus north of Mexican Hat, SR-261 commences in a westerly direction. After turning north, the route encounters the Moki Dugway, becoming an unpaved road. Following this, the road continues north and terminates at SR-95 west of Blanding.
The Moki Dugway was constructed in 1958 by Texas Zinc, a mining company, to transport uranium ore from the Happy Jack mine in Fry Canyon to the processing mill in Mexican Hat. The State Road Commission added SR-261 to the state highway system in 1957, following its present alignment from SR-47 (now US-163) north of Mexican Hat to SR-95.

Short of amenities but flush with epic views. At just 10 bucks a night it's a deal and a half!
Within a half hour to 45-minute drive, you can explore out of this world desert terrains such as iconic Monument Valley, Valley of the Gods, etc.
See my previous video of camping in the Valley of the Gods BLM area -
In the video, there is also footage from our drive up to the Muley Point Overlook via the Moki Dugway. From there you can really get a look at the humongous scale of the place.

Muley Point, Mexican Hat, Utah
Well, not technically Muley Point. It is pretty close to the point. Here you can over look the San Jaun Goosenecks near Mexican Hat, Ut. In the background you can see Monument Valley in the distance. This location is right at the top of the Moki Dugway shelf road. This and Muley point are a few miles from the Dugway. If you are coming up the dugway take the first left at the top.

Cruising the dirt road out Muley Point in Utah
After making the climb up Moki Dugway, I cruised the 5 mile dirt, sand and gravel track out to Muley Point overlook, which is located on BLM land, so you can camp on the cliff top for free!
The views are sensational and you can see out to Monument Valley, Navajo Mountain, and the deep canyons of the San Juan River.

Mexican Hat Rock - Goosenecks State Park - Moki Dugway - Utah - LeAw in the USA //Ep.30
We are living the American dream driving the Historic Route 66 from Chicago to Santa Monica but we are doing some detours to visit some places we like.
In this 30th episode, we boondock at Mexican Hat Rock, then visit Goosenecks State Park and drive up the Moki Dugway. Enjoy the ride with us! ;)
The name Mexican Hat comes from a curiously sombrero-shaped rock outcropping on the northeast edge of town; the rock measures 60-foot (18 m) wide by 12-foot (3.7 m). The Hat has two rock climbing routes ascending it. It has frequently been noted on lists of unusual place names.
Mexican Hat is a census-designated place (CDP) on the San Juan River on the northern edge of the Navajo Nations borders in south-central San Juan County, Utah, United States. The population was 31 at the 2010 census, a sharp decline from the previous two censuses.
The CDP is on U.S. Route 163 just 3 miles (5 km) south of the junction with State Route 261, and is just outside the northern boundary of both the Navajo Nation and Monument Valley. Goosenecks State Park is located just 9 miles (14 km) west.
Goosenecks State Park is a state park in the U.S. state of Utah, overlooking a deep meander of the San Juan River. The park is located near the southern border of the state a short distance from Mexican Hat, Utah. Millions of years ago, the Monument Upwarp forced the river to carve incised meanders over 1,000 feet (300 m) deep as the surrounding landscape slowly rose in elevation. Eroded by water, wind, frost, and gravity, this is a classic location for observing incised meanders.
Goosenecks State Park is largely undeveloped. Primitive campsites with picnic tables are scattered back from the edge of the cliff, and vault toilets are available. Campers are advised to bring their own water, food, and other necessary gear.
There are no developed hiking trails in the park, but the Honaker Trail, a few miles to the northwest, provides access to the San Juan River.

Moqui Dugway and Muley Point
Short clip showing the Moqui Dugway and the view from Muley Point of the goosenecks of the San Juan River with glimpses of Monument Valley in the distance.
Camping at Muley Point
Muley Point is a remote, scenic overlook near Mexican Hat offering stunning panoramic vistas of sweeping desert landscape. Extremely remote, Muley Point is located about 25 miles south of Natural Bridges Monument, accessible via a five-mile dirt and gravel road from SR-261. The road cuts through remote BLM lands until the turn-off just before Moki Dugway. There is a viewpoint about four miles in, but Muley Point is the real showstopper. On a clear day Monument Valley, the Four Corners, Valley of the Gods, and the Goosenecks are visible. Muley Point is a landscape of enormous boulders with cracks up to ten and even twenty feet deep. This is a place where you can sit still and hear the wind blow. The secluded overlook is considered one of the best free camping spots in the region, where overnighters can set up camp on the edge of sheer 1000' cliffs. The end of the gravel road enters the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area and there are a couple of other tracks heading further west, but after a few miles a deep tributary of the San Juan River (Johns Canyon) puts an end to further travel in this direction. From the junction with the gravel track it is about 60 miles north along UT 261 and UT 95 to the upper end of Lake Powell at Hite along White Canyon, a drive which passes close to many sites of interest including the Cedar Mesa plateau - crossed by many canyons containing numerous Anasazi ruins, Natural Bridges National Monument, White Canyon and its tributary slot canyons and Dark Canyon

Goosenecks State Park, UT
Today we continued our back roads travels thru Utah and stopped at Goosenecks State Park. All I can say is WOW – is this place beautifully unique!
As stated in their brochure: “The Goosenecks is one of the most impressive examples of an entrenched river meander on the North American continent. The San Juan River twists and turns through the meander, flowing a distance of over six miles while advancing only 1.5-miles west towards Lake Powell.”
We picked out a great camping spot right on the edge of the meandering river rim and had a great time including flying my drone (which I had to get a permit), having a bonfire and visits by Chinese tourists!
