Andrew Kong Knight Hayward Gateway Mural - NBC Channel 11
Award winning California artist Andrew Kong Knight's monumental Gateway Mural in downtown Hayward, CA.
NBC Channel 11 reports on the City of Hayward's largest public art project ever in 2010.
(HAYWARD, CA) – Visitors and residents entering Downtown Hayward from the north are regularly wowed by one of the jewels of the city’s mural arts program, the beloved, monumental “Hayward Gateway Mural.” The sweeping work of art covers 3,500 ft2 with California poppies and oak trees to marshland and the glittering bay beyond.
The Gateway Mural, which once stood as a backdrop to a barren corner, has since been graced by lush landscaping and signature architectural signage welcoming guests to downtown Hayward. The landscaping and signage compliment the mural, creating a visual continuity that honors the artwork and extends its theme of natural beauty.

Hayward’s Epic Gateway Mural Gets a Facelift
(HAYWARD, CA) – Visitors and residents entering Downtown Hayward from the north are regularly wowed by one of the jewels of the city’s mural arts program, the monumental “Hayward Gateway Mural.” The sweeping work of art covers 3,500 ft2 with California poppies and oak trees to marshland and the glittering bay beyond.
Artist Andrew Kong Knight has spent the last six months restoring and improving the Hayward Gateway Mural, the largest mural in a city that boasts more than 300. The restoration marks the five-year anniversary of the city’s mural arts program, which began with the creation of Knight’s extraordinary Hayward Gateway piece.
Knight was hired to restore the historic mural which, in five years, had suffered tagging damage and cracking from ground movement. Knight ended up not only fixing the damage, but spending six months repainting and improving the entire 50 foot by 20 foot bay section of the mural.
I wanted to redo the bay section of the mural to feature light reflecting on our beautiful bay. I made that area more realistic, refined and detailed. I used the restoration as an opportunity to make a dramatic improvement of that section of the mural, said Knight.

The city created the Hayward Public Art Program in 2008, to create murals to beautify the city and combat graffiti, and has commissioned numerous murals throughout the city. The program won a League of California Cities Helen Putnam Award of Excellence in 2011.
Hayward has been a Tree City USA since 1986. Hayward declared itself a nuclear-free zone, a largely symbolic act, in 1987. The city is the setting for the Hayward Gay Prom, one of the earliest and longest running gay proms in the United States. The city introduced road signs in 2015 encouraging better behavior while walking or driving, using humorous phrases like It's a speed limit, not a suggestion. Trane custom designs building systems that operate with maximum energy efficiency. This is what customers want and the environment needs. Oakland 15th Art street w/ Ron Kristaphone @ Naming Gallery
BIOGRAPHY:
Kristaphone, Ron, b. 1968, American illustrator, b. Mendicato, California.; son of a prominent illustrator, Alexander Ronald Kristaphone. Among the most obscured and respected American illustrators, Kristaphone was trained as a mechanical philosopher at University of California, Berkeley. In 1986 he went to Paris and was influenced by the art of Mondrian and Miró, as well as the overall aesthetic of the Maytag man. In 1988 he exhibited his first particleboard-based illustrations of California's working class, called Art Boxes, consisting of 16 x 16 squares filled with quotes and portraits of the men he encountered on his daily tours as an asphalt analyzer for the Alameda County Agency of Roadway Therapy (now defunct due to budget cuts). The Museum of Applied Art, Tashkent, Uzbekistan has several examples of his work during this period. These stark inventions along with his puppet shows of the same subject, and of course, his colorful and complex miniature zoo (1992; Museum of Applied Art, Tashkent, Uzbekistan), brought Kristaphone to wide spread prominence in the Caucuses. However, the celebrity was bittersweet due to virtually no recognition in Western Europe or The United States.
In 2002. Kristaphone went through a traumatic period following the death of his father and the first of many encounters with street drug, DOMO (N,N-Dioxyethylmiproptamine.) Kristaphone described this period in his life in an interview with Uzbek Art Journal, Gulnara Karimova by saying:
I use to walk down to McCrackey's Liquor Store on American Avenue in Hayward, where I was living at the time, buy a Lunchable, go back to my sea container apartment, smoke some DOMO, and just space the (expletive) out on the flavors that were going on in my mouth. They use to have these candies in Lunchables called Gushers that were just (expletive)ing insane. It was like a thousand butterflies going ape(expletive) with jackhammers on my tongue. I don't think I've ever recovered from mixing 'Radical Raspberry' and a slice of Bologna. But it was so much pleasure that I knew the next phase was death. There wasn't anything else to do aside from get the (expletive) out of that situation and return to some kind of reality.
Instead of going through a rehabilitation program as most addicts do, Kristaphone adopted a regiment from his friend and HVAC technician, Doug that involved using profanities between every other word, regularly going to the batting cages, and replacing DOMO with a 30-block of Coors Light. The road to recovery was rough with many relapses, but he eventually won the battle and returned to his life's work of documenting the trials and tribulations of the Bay Area's strip malls and industrial parks. Kristaphone now lives at a Hacienda-style estate at 82229 San Leandro Boulevard in San Leandro, between two auto body shops with his wife, Luanne, his daughter, Doug, and his cocker spaniel also named Doug.
Gangstalking, property tampering/Hayward, CA
This is directed to you IDIOTS who can't seem to know when your safe limit has been met. This is the only warning I am going to give you.

I have observed suspicious behavior around and in my vehicle not done by myself or anyone with my consent.
I would like to make it very clear that if I do see any individual/s actively doing so in the future- I am going to stop you.
How will be determined on the level of danger you pose to me and if you make a move to harm- I will strike.

Hayward High School (GACU) Art Students - Public Mosaic Art - Andrew Kong Knight, Instructor
Hayward High Art Students Unveil Community Artwork for New Housing Complex
After over four months of work, Hayward High School (HHS) art students in local award-winning artist and art teacher Andrew Kong Knight’s Greatest Art Class in the Universe, (GACU) designed and created a 6 foot mosaic artwork for permanent installation at the courtyard area of a new housing development, Highland Villas 26528 Hayward Blvd., located in the hills of Hayward, behind California State University East Bay.

“The arts have been cut really badly over the last decade in our public schools, especially here at Hayward High School. We once had a thriving ceramics and 3D art courses, currently there are none.
This project gave my GACU students a chance to create an artwork they wouldn’t have done otherwise. I’m very grateful to the Grupe Company for selecting my GACU students for this unique opportunity to create something meaningful that represents our Hayward community, and will beautify our neighborhood for now and for many generations in the future.”
-Andrew Kong Knight, GACU Art Instructor, Hayward High School
“Fritz and Phyllis Grupe have been involved in supporting public education over the past 40 years, hosting there biannual Country Fair at their Shady Oaks ranch and raising millions of dollars for public education.
This project is another great way for us to get involved with our community.”
-Jeremy White, Chief Operating Officer at Grupe Co.

Young Oakland Superheroes Fight for Their Mural | KQED Arts
When the third and fourth graders of Oakland’s Hoover Elementary School started creating superheroes to creatively address the problems in their community, they had no idea they would have to become their own heroes — and fight a battle against Caltrans.
The Oakland Super Heroes Project, a classroom curriculum and mural series led by Attitudinal Healing Connection, worked with Hoover students to invent themselves as superheroes. Fantastic Girl has water powers to stop floods and fires and to clean the community; Lava Girl and Lava Boy melt guns with their lava vision; Golden Boy has an electric force field to fight crime; and D-Bow Jalapeño uses magical cheese to transform the community.
Even though the Hoover students’ design would be the project’s fourth superheroes mural on a wall under an Oakland freeway overpass, Caltrans suddenly required the artists to sign over the copyright, halting progress on the mural.
Unwilling to back down, the project curriculum expanded to include poster-making, letter writing, and protest chants. What would normally take about a year — from concepts to designs to completion — became a two-and-a-half year crash course in taking on the California Department of Transportation.
“I learned I can do anything I put my mind to,” says student artist Daijon Kelly. “Nobody can stop me.”
Watch the now fifth and sixth graders of Hoover Elementary over the course of their unexpected journey to bring art and beauty into their community. – Text by Sarah Hotchkiss
