Japan Offers Cherry Trees To People of San Diego and Port of San Diego
Thirty-one pink cloud cherry trees that the Consulate-General of Japan in Los Angeles recently gifted to the citizens of San Diego now grace the San Diego waterfront, just south of the USS Midway Museum, and on Shelter Island near the Yokohama Friendship Bell.
Board of Port Commissioners Chairman Lou Smith introduced Japanese Consul General Jun Niimi at the cherry tree dedication ceremony on Thursday, March 29, 2012. Smith said that when visitors walk along the downtown waterfront and enjoy the solitude of the Friendship Bell, they will be reminded of the Japanese generosity and friendship. Niimi said the trees will become a lasting symbol of the enduring relationship between Japan and the United States.

2014-09-24 Motorcycle Accident on I-5 North at Carmel Valley Road - San Diego County CA
I was driving in the second lane on the Northbound Interstate 5 when I noticed the smoke from a crash just ahead. I think the guy on the motorcycle ditched his bike and his bike either hit another vehicle or motorcycle. There was another man on the ground right up against the median about 15 yards North of the location of the motorcyclist I saw as I pulled forward after my initial stop. A CHP officer arrived as I was attempting to call 911 - getting a busy signal multiple times. I decided that there were plenty of other witnesses to the accident, there were a lot of people standing on the roadway - and I felt it was safest to carry on my way.

Places to see in ( San Diego - USA ) Coronado Bridge
The San Diego–Coronado Bridge, locally referred to as the Coronado Bridge, is a prestressed concrete/steel girder bridge, crossing over San Diego Bay in the United States, linking San Diego with Coronado, California. The bridge is signed as part of State Route 75.
In 1926, John D. Spreckels recommended that a bridge be built between San Diego and Coronado, but voters dismissed the plan. The U.S. Navy initially did not support a bridge that would span San Diego Bay to connect San Diego to Coronado. They feared a bridge could be collapsed by attack or an earthquake and trap the ships stationed at Naval Base San Diego. In 1935, an officer at the naval air station at North Island argued that if a bridge was built to cross the bay then the Navy would leave San Diego.
In 1951–52, the Coronado City Council initiated plans for bridge feasibility studies. By 1964 the Navy supported a bridge if there was at least 200 feet (61 m) of clearance for ships which operate out of the nearby Naval Base San Diego to pass underneath it. To achieve this clearance with a reasonable grade, the bridge length was increased by taking a curved path, rather than a more direct path to Coronado. The clearance would allow an empty oil-fired aircraft carrier to pass beneath it – it is not sufficient for Nimitz-class nuclear aircraft carriers in light load condition.
The pillars supporting the bridge on the eastern end are painted with huge murals as part of Chicano Park, the largest collection of Chicano art murals in the world.[19] This neighborhood park and mural display were created in response to a community uprising in 1970, which protested the negative effects of the bridge and Interstate 5 on the Barrio Logan community. Local artist Salvador Torres proposed using the bridge and freeway pillars as a giant canvas for Chicano art at a time when urban wall murals were rare in the United States, and he and many other artists created the murals when permission for the park was finally granted in 1973.
A decades-old local urban legend claims the center span of the bridge was engineered to float in the event of collapse, allowing Naval ships to push the debris and clear the bay. The myth may have developed as a result of the hollow box design of the 1,880-foot center span, combined with the low-profile barges that made it appear to float on its own during construction. However, Caltrans and the bridge's principal architect, Robert Mosher, maintain that the legend is false.

LETTERS FROM LOS ANGELES : JACK RUTBERG FINE ARTS
Film by Eric Minh Swenson. Music by Sam Webster
Los Angeles, CA - Jack Rutberg Fine Arts in Los Angeles will present an expansive exhibition titled Letters from Los Angeles: Text in Southern California Art which will include works by more than thirty contemporary L.A.-based artists who incorporate elements of words and letters in their work. Co-curated by Aldis Browne and Jack Rutberg, the exhibition opens with a reception on Saturday, November 17th from 5:00 to 8:00 PM, with a number of the artists in attendance. The exhibition runs through Saturday, December 22nd at Jack Rutberg Fine Arts, located at 357 North La Brea Avenue.
L.A.'s association with typography in the visual arts is perhaps unique. Text has historically been ubiquitous on the city's streets with political and gang graffiti, and L.A.'s ever-present billboards that surfaced as far back as the onset of Southern California's car culture and highway system.
While other cities are represented by monumental structures such as New York's Empire State building, the Acropolis in Athens, Big Ben in London and the Eiffel Tower in Paris, L.A.'s most prominent symbols are text -- most iconic is the Hollywood Sign, along with the great movie studio logos of MGM, 20th Century Fox, Warner Brothers, etc, which have been familiar to billions of people in each generation around the world for nearly a century. So it is perhaps understandable that Los Angeles has a pronounced affinity for the usage of text in the visual arts which distinguishes it from its historic precedents.
Typography in modern art first surfaced in the last decades of the 19th century when artists such as Toulouse-Lautrec, Cheret and Steinlen portrayed the demi-monde of Paris and in the process celebrated specific cafes, performers and liquors and other commercial products. Later, the abstract use of typography appeared in many art movements of the 20th century, from the Russian Constructivists and Bauhaus, Dada, Surrealists and Pop art movements.
The contemporary artists featured in this Letters from Los Angeles exhibition have used text in extraordinarily diverse ways: immortalizing L.A.'s signs, streets and gas stations, using comic book captions to convey dramatic angst, juxtaposing text with appropriated images, framing collages with wry observations and titles, employing the power of language to pose disquieting comments in conceptual works; surrealist re-configuring of old prints and clippings with snatches of verse and prose. The range of approaches is as individual as the artists themselves. The vast and diverse ways Southern California artists incorporate words, numerals and text into their compositions reflects an aesthetic that might be seen as a logical antecedent to the current spotlight on contemporary-graffiti and tattoo art.
Artists included in Letters from Los Angeles: Text in Southern California Art are:
Lita Albuquerque, John Baldessari, Bill Barminski, Wallace Berman, Chris Burden, Hans Burkhardt, Huguette Caland, Doug Edge, Mark X Farina, Jud Fine, Llyn Foulkes, Eve Fowler, Gajin Fujita, Scott Grieger, Mark Steven Greenfield, Raul Guerrero, George Herms, Dennis Hopper, Ed Kienholz, Barbara Kruger, Lynn Hanson, Charles LaBelle, Mark Licari, Michael C. McMillen, Jim Morphesis, Bruce Nauman, Stas Orlovski, David Allan Peters, Paulin Paris, Raymond Pettibon, Lari Pittman, Ken Price, Bruce Richards, Ed Ruscha, Richard Shelton, Alexis Smith, J. Michael Walker, Gordon Wagner, Tom Wudl and others.
Letters from Los Angeles: Text in Southern California Art opens November 17, and extends through December 22 at Jack Rutberg Fine Arts, located at 357 N. La Brea Avenue, Los Angeles. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Friday from 10 AM to 6 PM and Saturday from 10 AM to 5 PM on Saturday. For further information, phone (323) 938-5222 or email jrutberg@jackrutbergfinearts.com
