Orgosolo is a comune located in the Province of Nuoro, in the autonomous region of Sardinia, at about 110 kilometres north of Cagliari and about 13 kilometres south of Nuoro. The municipality is famous for its murales. These political paintings can be found on walls all over Orgosolo. Since about 1969, the murales reflect different aspects of Sardinia's political struggles but also deal with international issues.
Vittorio De Seta's movie Banditi a Orgosolo (1961) focuses on the past way of life in central Sardinia and on the phenomenon of Banditry in the region. At one time Orgosolo was known as the village of the murderers due to its high crime rate. Bandits of the surrounding mountains used the church door to post notices of death sentence passed on their enemies.
Since 2006, Orgosolo hosts a Science Festival, whose peculiarity is in the use of the popular traditions and knowledge as keys to the scientific world. The theme of the 2008 edition (May 30 - June 1) will be Energy. The theme of the 2007 edition was Water. The theme of the first edition was Astronomy.

Orgosolo is a small village perched on top of a mountain overlooking a beautiful valley consisting of barren land, limeston cliffs, ancient nuraghi and towering oaks. It's the symbol of barbaricina's culture.
The historic centre is made of small alleys with simple houses and their arbors. Orgosolo is known in the whole island thanks to its famous murals of the 1970s about the social protest.
Autunno in Barbagia is a big event where you can immerse yourself in an authentic path of ancient traditions, arts and crafts, that are jealously guarded from the communities. You can walk through lots of stands selling local handmade foods and various typical Sardinian products. And don't forget to taste the local food!

DANCING IN ORGOSOLO, SARDINIA at the AUTUNNO in BARBAGIA FESTIVAL
For 15 weekends during the fall, towns in Sardinia celebrate their culture during the Autonno in Barbagia festival. I visited the village of Orgosolo, known for its famous street art murals. People were dancing in the street. The festival also featured some amazing food and residents opened their homes and shops to showcase local products and foods.
I flew to Sardinia on Air Italy ( they have frequent flights from their hub in Milan and from major European cities. They also fly direct to Milan from LAX, JFK, SFO and MIA.

Central Sardinia
The Sardinian hill town of Orgosolo is famous for its anti-authoritarian streak – inspired by shepherds and immortalised in its street art.
We negotiated our way over 1,000-metre-high mountains, winding by olive trees and ancient dry-stone walls. Breaking the brow of our final hill, we were confronted by the high cliff which walls Orgosolo in on two sides, and there below was the town itself, perched on a steep hillside. As we descended into it we passed the first of what we’d come for – the famous murals.
The arrival of decent roads and the affordability of the ubiquitous little Fiats must have opened up life here significantly, but the mountains remain enough of an obstacle that the area is still among Europe’s most remote and least populated.
Outlaws and bandits benefited from this isolation. For many hundreds of years it was a place to hide the kidnapped and elude the authorities. Its reputation as a place of villainy inspired Vittorio De Seta to make his 1961 film Banditi a Orgosolo (Bandits of Orgosolo), with local shepherds cast in lead roles.
The town’s anti-authoritarian predisposition no doubt came to the fore when, in 1969, it successfully resisted the Italian military’s plan to create a base on common land used by local shepherds. This episode, known as the Pratobello revolution, was commemorated in the first of the murals. These were mostly created by Francesco Del Casino, a local art teacher and communist, who, in the 70s and 80s, worked with disadvantaged youths to begin a trend which would soon replace banditry as Orgosolo’s primary distinction. Huge, cubist graphics recount global social injustices – from Vietnam to Gaza – or call for Sardinian independence. Others simply depict scenes from everyday rural life.
A few tourists do make it here to see the murals, although locals assure us that Orgosolo’s renowned hospitality has always attracted visitors. Don’t expect much in the way of tourist information, although there is a smattering of souvenir shops, from which you can buy an English-language guide to the murals. There are also plenty of old shepherds sitting around who would be happy to chat, but you may have to grapple with the town’s unique dialect.

The film is set deep in the hills of Sardinia, in a small shepherding town famous for its murals. Deeply traditional, the town’s residents still speak their own form of Sardinian. Young men gallop up and down the cobbled streets on horseback, and women dress in black.
This short documentary explores how residents use story and memory to make sense of their lives. Some refer to political ideology as a tool of explanation, and others to local memories and lore. Story and memory are also embodied in a more tangible way in the production of a dripping ricotta, around which the film hangs.
