Mount Fuji From Foot to Summit - Murayama Ancient Trail & Fujinomiya Route - Aug 2018
Mount Fuji solo ascent from foot to summit - 8-9 Aug 2018.
Started at Murayama Sengen Shrine and used the Murayama Ancient Trail and Fujinomiya Route at the south of Fuji.
- the entrance to the trail was cordoned off. Not sure of the reason but i proceeded on anyway.
- hiked thru primary forest for 9 hours (abt 18km) up to the 5th Station. Abt 5.30am to abt 2.30pm.
- encountered a small bear in the woods.
- skull of animal (dog?)
- tombstones.
- very easy to get lost. relied on GPS to recalibrate along the way.
- No water or food resupply (altho i passed by an youth adventure camp)
- rained around noon. In the midst of Typhoon Shanshan.
- Alot of fallen trees when the slope of mountain is more pronounced.
- have to climb over or crawl under crissed-crossed logs.
- go up and down ravines.
- At the 5th station, was told the the mountain was closed due to thunderstorm. Could not proceed anymore.
- No choice but to stay for the night at 6th station mountain hut.
- whole night was heavy thunderstorm till it stopped at ard 2am.
- Started off at abt 6am+ and summitted ard 10.30am.
- Mountain was quite empty due to the recent storm.
- no time to do the crater loop of 4km at the summit or the originally planned gotemba descend route to see the Hoei crater as i need to catch the train to tokyo.
- descended via Fujinomiya route to 5th station around 1pm+.
- took bus to Fujinomiya.
Feel free to shoot any questions on this route. I couldn't find much info on the murayama ancient trail when researching and would be glad to share my experience on it, thanks!
Mount Fuji
Mount Fuji (富士山, Fujisan, IPA: [ɸɯꜜdʑisaɴ] ( )), located on Honshu Island, is the highest mountain in Japan at 3,776.24 m (12,389 ft). An active stratovolcano that last erupted in 1707--08, Mount Fuji lies about 100 kilometres (60 mi) south-west of Tokyo, and can be seen from there on a clear day. Mount Fuji's exceptionally symmetrical cone, which is snow-capped several months a year, is a well-known symbol of Japan and it is frequently depicted in art and photographs, as well as visited by sightseers and climbers. It is one of Japan's Three Holy Mountains (三霊山, Sanreizan) along with Mount Tate and Mount Haku; it is a Special Place of Scenic Beauty, a Historic Site, and was added to the World Heritage List as a Cultural Site on June 22, 2013.
The mountain has been selected as a cultural rather than a natural heritage site. As per UNESCO, Mount Fuji has inspired artists and poets and been the object of pilgrimage for centuries. The 25 locations include the mountain itself, Fujisan Hongū Sengen Taisha and six other Sengen shrines, two lodging houses, Lake Yamanaka, Lake Kawaguchi, the eight Oshino Hakkai hot springs, two lava tree molds, the remains of the Fuji-kō cult in the Hitoana cave, Shiraito Falls, and Miho no Matsubara pine tree grove.
