CHEAP ARCTIC Train World's Northernmost (Budget Travel Russia){Murmansk World's Largest Arctic City}
Budget Travel Russia #9
Cheap Arctic train rides are at least an incentive to visit Russia's High Arctic and Murmansk world's largest Arctic city.
Not many choices toward leaving Russia's Far North when traveling on limited economic means. The overnight second-class train to Petrozavodsk meets Matt's budget and sense of adventure.
On one of the world's northernmost trains, the scenic route chugs through the tundra above the Arctic Circle. Let it be said though, after a while, the view does not change for hundreds of kilometers.
If the ride becomes dull, second-class trains in Russia are comfortable, not expensive and easy in which to sleep. But it cannot be emphasized enough passengers must entertain themselves. Oh, how Matt tries to pass the time when moving onto the next large city, Petrozavodsk.

Murmansk in 1970
Continuing my look at the Soviet Union in the 1970's, I now turn travel to the far northwest part of Russia and show the great city of Murmansk . The city is located on Kola Bay, an inlet of the Barents Sea on the northern shore of the Kola Peninsula, close to the Russia's borders with Norway and Finland.

Views along the Murmansk Railway in 1915
Here I present a photographic journey taken by the pioneering Russian Photographer Sergei Mikhailovich Prokudin-Gorskii in 1915. The journey was along the St. Petersburg to Murmansk Railway being constructed at the time.
The journey begins near Lake Lagoda and finishes at the Solovetskii Island in the White Sea.
Photographs taken not only of the railway, the stations and the towns & villages passed, but also the POW camps housing Austrian servicemen as the war with Russia was at its height...........
Murmansk
Murmansk (Russian: Му́рманск; Kildin Sami: Мурман ланнҍ; Northern Sami: Murmánska; Skolt Sami: Muurman) is a port city and the administrative center of Murmansk Oblast, Russia, located in the extreme northwest part of Russia, on the Kola Bay, an inlet of the Barents Sea on the northern shore of the Kola Peninsula, close to the Russia's borders with Norway and Finland.
Despite its extreme northern location above the Arctic Circle, Murmansk tends to be nearly the same as any other Russian city of its size, featuring highway and railway access to the rest of Europe, a railway station, and a trolleybus system, in fact, the northernmost on Earth.
