Town that inspired Matisse continues to attract artists from around the world
LEAD IN:
A magnet for atrists for more than 100 years, the French town of Vence has inspired many celebrated artists including Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso.
Today it is still visited by people from all around the world who come to experience its artistic history and be inspired to paint, draw and sculpt in the town's picturesque surroundings.
STORY LINE:
These pretty villages near the French Riviera have always attracted visitors due to the warm climate and easy going vibe.
Artists are no exception and since the beginning of the last century, many world famous painters and sculptors have been coming to the area to find inspiration for their work.
Vence is a small medieval town of 20,000 people, a half hour drive from the Riviera beaches.
In addition to its charming cafes and stone cobble houses, the list of artists associated with the town is impressive:
Henri Matisse, Marc Chagall, Pablo Picasso, Jean Dubuffet, Witold Gombrowicz, Raoul Dufy, Armand Fernandez and Sol Lewitt have all left their mark here. Today, young and emerging artists are still drawing energy from Vence and its environment.
Zia Mirabdolbaghi is the Director of Chateau de Villeneuve, a museum and gallery that exhibits the work of artists associated with Vence.
It is the nature and the intimacy. It's like a huge garden with a small medieval town placed in the middle of it. That's how it feels to me, he says of the town.
Here, they (artists) come to find that essential intimacy, the proximity with people and the environment you have small neighbourhoods, small shops life is very human here.
Many noted artists have been inspired by the beauty of Vence, but Mirabdolbaghi credits Henri Matisse for making the town famous.
Matisse came to Vence from Nice in June 1943 and lived for five years in the town's 'Villa le Reve' - which means dream villa in French.
What he found in 'Villa le Reve' and its vicinity is the atmosphere - and it is curious what I have to say, but he said it - it is the atmosphere of Tahiti - when he was there you see young women riding bicycles going in town, you have (specific) smells and vegetation. (It was important to him) as he was a very botanical painter, says Mirabdolbaghi. His stay (in Vence) was very productive because he created many of his works, canvasses, paintings, windows, very famous windows and it is here where he started his famous coloured paper cuttings.
One of Matisse's most famous works in Vence is Rosaire Chapel, more commonly known as Matisse Chapel.
Built on a hill behind Vence the architecture, the interior and the stained glass windows are all credited to Matisse. After four years work, the chapel - built for Dominican nuns - was opened in 1951.
Each year some 60,000 people from all around the world visit the chapel.
Mirabdolbaghi says the town ensures that artists continue to come to Vance by inviting emerging names to exhibit their work here. Francois Franta, a Czech-born sculptor and painter says he needed no invitation:
I was born twice. I was born in Czechoslovakia and the second time in Vence, 55 years ago.
Franta is travels all around the world for his art, but frequently returns to Vence. He says he has never stopped being inspired by Vence and recalls arriving and finding the town brimming with famous names:
At that time there were a lot of artists, there were still traces of Matisse, Chagall I had opportunity to meet (Pablo) Picasso, (Jean) Dubuffet was there too, (Raoul) Dufy before him so this region has very strong ties with painters and sculptors.
Turid Seljestrd, an amateur painter from Norway says the town is like a magnet for artists.
