Places to see in ( Pau - France ) Musee des Beaux Arts
The Museum of Fine Arts of Pau is a municipal museum of the city of Pau in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques . Founded in 1864 on the initiative of the Society of Bearn Friends of the Arts, it is the second most important museum in Aquitaine, after the Museum of Fine Arts in Bordeaux.
Inaugurated in 1931, the museum building is the work of architect Jacques Ruillier (1901-1986). It is a perfect example of the style of the 1930s. Its Greek cross plan is inspired by Byzantine art , while the exterior facades are a reminder of ancient Greek architecture: protruding pilasters (non-bearing ornaments), cornices adorned with an ornate regular Doric frieze ( triglyph ). Note on one of its sides the presence of a remarkable peristyle .
The collections of paintings of the museum are of a great richness, thanks to the legacy Louis La Caze (1798-1869) which, in 1872, has brought to the museum 30 paintings of major painters such as Zurbaran, Bassano or Jordaens. In a more general way is Western painting which is shown from the xvi th century to the present day.
The museum presents works of the great European schools of painting: the Italian school - with Andrea Solario ( Holy Family ), Pietro della Vecchia , Simone Cantarini , Giulio Carpioni , Carlo Maratta , Luca Giordano with a Philosopher from the famous series of portraits he painted on this subject, Giovanni Battista Piazzetta , Francesco Trevisani or Gaspare Traversi, the Spanish school with big names such as Jose de Ribera and his Saint-Jerome , El Greco with a Saint Francis receiving the stigmas , Francisco de Zurbaran ( Felipe de Guimaran, Father of the Thank you ) but also painters like Alonso Cano and Juan Carreno de Miranda. The Flemish and Dutch schools of the xvii th century are represented by painters such as Jan Lievens , Nicolas Berchem , Bartholomeus van der Heist , Jan van Huysum , Jan Miel , Pieter Neefs (the Younger), Pierre Paul Rubens (with two beautiful canvases that were originally tapestry cartoons: Achilles winner of Hector and Thetis receiving from Vulcan the weapons of Achilles and a sketch in grisaille: The Last Judgment ), Jacob Jordaens , David Teniers the Younger , Jan Brueghel the Elder ( the Entry into the Ark ), and Frans Francken the Younger . The French school, including the xviii th century figure with works by François de Troy , Nicolas de Largillière , Natoire ,Jean-Baptiste Oudry , Jean-Marc Nattier , Carle Van Loo and Hubert Robert ( The Fire of the Opera at the Royal Palace and the Cascatelles of Tivoli ).
The xix th century, mostly French, is represented in both its academic and innovative trends (impressionism, symbolism ...) with painters like François Marius Granet , Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux , Eugène Isabey , Eugene Deveria , Camille Corot , Edgar Degas and his famous The New Orleans Cotton Bureau , Eugene Boudin , Albert Lebourg , Henri Fantin-Latour , Eugene Carriere , Berthe Morisot and Edouard Vuillard . For the xxe century we find painters like Kees van Dongen ( Portrait of Anne Diriart , 1924), André Lhote , Lucien Simon , Albert Marquet and Rodolphe Caillaux . The sculptures of Rodin or Alfred Boucher , like that of Le Repos (1892), are very important.

Places to see in ( Pau - France ) Musee Bernadotte
Places to see in ( Pau - France ) Musee Bernadotte
The Bernadotte museum is located in Pau ( Pyrénées-Atlantiques ), it traces the life and career of Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte who became Marshal of the Empire and King of Sweden and Norway. The municipal museum is located in the birthplace of Bernadotte, listed as a historic monument since 1953. This is a typical Béarnaise bourgeois building dating from the xviii th century . The house Balagué offers all the characteristics of a city residence of this century there: construction in pebbles, bricks and stones of size, galleries of wood on court. The pieces bear witness to the traditional living environment of a Bearn family at the time.
In 1935 , the birthplace of Bernadotte was poorly maintained and in a bad state. The various people interested in the history of Pau, as well as the municipality of the city, began to discuss the future of this building with a rich past. A company was formed to safeguard the interests of the house. A first collection of objects that belonged to Bernadotte was collected.
During the war, the museum was closed, and the financial situation of the company became particularly precarious. The mayor of the time, Louis Sallenave , took over the file in hand to allow the reopening of the museum in good conditions. He contacted the Swedish ambassador in France to set up a viable financial plan. The whole of the birthplace and the collections belonging to the Bernadotte Society were thus bought half by the city and the other half by the crown of Sweden. Gunnar Lundberg, director of the Ticino Institute, was commissioned to install the Bernadotte Museum by the Crown Prince of the time Gustav VI Adolphus .
The Lundberg donation still makes up most of the museum's collections, although successive additions have been made by the various kings of Sweden. The life of Bernadotte is thus evoked, from the young soldier of the king, to the general of the Revolution, then marshal of Napoleon, to the Crown Prince and finally King of Sweden and Norway.
Paintings, miniatures, watercolors, drawings, engravings, snuffboxes, porcelain, books and rare prints, coins and medals, newsletters, personal souvenirs (saber, spurs, gloves) are part of the collection. The letter in which Napoleon authorizes Bernadotte to respond favorably to his appointment as Crown Prince of Sweden is part of the collection presented at the museum. The royal iconography is also very present with many documents, engravings and paintings, evoking the reign of Charles XIV John (Bernadotte), and his successors.

Ecole de Beaux arts à Pau

Places to see in ( Pau - France )
Pau is a city in southwestern France, set along the Pyrenees mountains’ northern edge approximately 85 km from the Spanish border. A walk along central Pau’s Boulevard des Pyrénées offers countryside views and mountain panoramas on clear days. The boulevard leads up to the castle of Château de Pau, birthplace of King Henry IV of France and Navarre. It now displays tapestries, period furnishings and artworks.
The first thing you notice about Pau is the location. In the Pyrénées-Atlantiques department of the new huge region of Nouvelle Aquitaine, the city is surrounded by beautiful mountains. From here it’s a short drive through the spectacular National Pyrenees Park to the border with Spain and just 125 km (77 miles) or around a 90-minute drive from the top seaside resort of Biarritz on the Atlantic Coast. Pau became the capital of the kingdom on Navarre in 1512. Its royal status was secured through Henry of Bourbon. Born in Pau Castle, he became King of France in 1589.
Three centuries later Pau was discovered by a Scottish doctor, Alexander Taylor, who announced it as the place for cures of all kinds of ailments due to the great oceanic climate, warm and wet in the winter, and just delightfully warm in the summer. The English followed the somewhat dubious doctor’s recommendation and in the 19th century, flocked here, bringing with them all the English past times: horse racing, croquet, cricket and fox-hunting. The first 18-hole golf course in Europe was built here in 1860, and it was also the first to admit women to its range. The building of the railways brought other nations to this city beside the mountains while the French found Pau just as attractive. Pau became the most fashionable resort in western Europe and remained so up until 1914.
The central old part of Pau is pedestrianized, so it’s a pleasant, relaxed city to walk around. The Boulevard de Pyrénées makes the best starting point with views to the country on one side and the majestic mountains on the other. Only a small part remains of the original keep built in 1370. The building was thoroughly taken over by Louis-Philippe and Napoleon III in the 19th century and well renovated. There are only French guided tours, but even if you don’t understand much, it’s worth going in for the splendid interiors and series of Gobelin tapestries hung on the walls to impress past guests and keep the place warm. And you can wander the magnificent gardens for free.
The thoroughly ordinary soldier Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte was born here. You can see the story of how he fought in Napoleon’s armies, became Maréchal and ended up as King Charles XI of Sweden in the rooms here. Alot to see in Pau such as :
