At the end of the XIII century, when the city of Pistoia experienced a period of great economic and political prosperity, it became necessary to build a larger and more dignified building for the city magistrates that until then had found temporary housing in some private houses. then in an older building of which no trace remains today.
A tradition widespread in the last century, but not confirmed by any document, wants the building that is still the seat of the municipal administration was built by the Podesta Giano della Bella, hence the name of Palazzo di Giano which still distinguishes it today. In fact, even before the regency of the latter, the municipality had bought a nucleus of houses located at the corner of the square and the current Ripa del Sale, near the first wall belt. It is thus to fall, according to the most recent historiography, any active role on the part of this mayor.
The building history of the building is very complex and even today not completely clarified, but despite the lack of documentation it is possible to reconstruct the main phases. After the construction of the first nucleus, which occurred at the end of the thirteenth century around the courtyard in which today was placed the Miracle by the Marino Marini sculptor, the Palazzo dei Signori Anziani and the Gonfalonier of Justice was extended during the first half of the following century with the addition, among other things, of the front porch which at first was limited to only four arches .
A further expansion took place when the rooms bordering the Ripa della Comunità were built, now used as temporary exhibitions, and the building was raised to the second floor. The fifth façade arch was also built in order to give homogeneity to the front which is characterized by its originality with respect to the modules of Tuscan public architecture. Towards the middle of the fourteenth century the building took on the appearance that still characterizes it
Of the first half of the seventeenth century, however, is the construction of the bridge that connects the building to the cathedral in order to allow the city Magistrates to directly reach the choir to attend the religious services. During the maximum affirmation of the Medicean regime, the great central coat of arms with the Medici arms surmounted by the papal tiara and large keys in honor of Pope Leo X, an illustrious member of this family, was placed on the façade.
However, on the façade there is no shortage of medieval signs, such as the head of black marble surmounted by an iron bat that a popular legend identifies with the effigy of the city's traitor Filippo Tedici, although presumably it is the portrait of King Musetto II of Majorca, killed by the Pistoiese captain Grandonius of the Ghisilieri during the conquest of the Balearics in the twelfth century. The head of the Tedici is instead on the portal of Sant'Andrea and the tradition wants it to be black because in a sign of contempt the torches were extinguished before entering the church.

Tourists can reach the whole medieval Piazza del Duomo through Via Cavour through Piazza della Sala , Where it keeps the market. The square is so unusual compared to normal Italian squares: the baptistery, hidden in a recess side of the square, is built in Gothic style covered with bands of white and green. The Duomo di Pistoia is located opposite the baptistery, by putting on display a facade devoid of ornaments. The tourist is forced in this way to focus its attention on the bell tower and sull'enorme buildings surrounding the complex and well-decorated building in the City, which houses inside the Museo Civico and its collection of Tuscan art from the thirteenth to fourteenth century, and the Praetorian palace, once home to the mayor.
Unique is the breadth of the square, gives the impression that it was designed for a much larger city of Pistoia we know today. For centuries, Piazza del Duomo was the focus of civil and ecclesiastical power, with inside many buildings of merit such as:
The Cathedral of San Zeno, headed to San Zeno bishop, who keeps inside the silver altar of San Jacopo.
The bell tower, built on an ancient tower of Lombard origin, in Romanesque style, is divided into three orders of balconies and equipped with belfry with a cusp that because of earthquakes that flagellarono the city in late medieval era was rebuilt several times. Total reaches a height of 67 meters.
The Baptistery of San Giovanni in court the fourteenth century, Gothic style, with decorations in green and white marble.
The Palace of Bishops composed of porch, the first floor, in Gothic style and restored in 1981. The underground is enriched by a route important archaeological excavation site with a stele type of Etruscan Fiesole, a Roman furnace and stretches of the walls of Pistoriae. Not many years is open to the public and is a rare example of stratigraphic excavation of the museum.
The Praetorian Palace or the court, also in Gothic style (he lost in the interior part of his style because of extension works carried nell'Ottocento). It is famous for its courtyard with the coats of arms of judges.
The Palazzo del Comune, with a beautiful facade adorned with mullioned windows and triple.
The former church of Santa Maria Cavalier.
The Catilina tower, 30 meters high.
Piazza del Duomo is not only religious and bureaucracy: once a year in fact, the square comes alive at most of the season most important Pistoia, the Dell'Orso carousel, the answer pistoiese medieval traditions of the Palio di Siena.

Places to see in ( Pistoia - Italy ) Palazzo dei Vescovi
The ancient Palace of the Bishops of Pistoia , located in the Piazza del Duomo, was built in the eleventh century in the ancient market space that the emperor Otto III had donated to the bishop of Pistoia, when the conflicts between the Chapter and the Bishop induced this last to build an autonomous dwelling. It is attested from 1091 and initially was a fortified dwelling and equipped with battlements, then in the twelfth century it acquired the appearance of a stately home with mullioned windows, three-light windows and frescoes in the main room, of which traces remain difficult to interpret.
Some substantial changes to the architecture of the building were carried out between the mid- twelfth and early thirteenth centuries . The first attestation is the one that modified the bishop's court, with the construction of the Sacristy of San Jacopo , built between 1163 and 1170 and annexed to the Chapel of San Jacopo, where the relic of the saint was kept. This was the sacristy where the theft of Vanni Fucci narrated by Dante in the XXIV canto of the Inferno and perpetrated in 1293 or 1294 took place . Its construction had been made necessary by the lack of a service room for the chapel because of the contrasts with the Municipality of Pistoia that had wanted the Chapel of San Jacopo obtained in the first two bays of the left aisle of the cathedral but separated from the rest of the building not to create confusion between the cult of San Iacopo, proclaimed patron of the city around 1145 , and the previous cult of San Zeno, remained patron of the Pistoia Church and the cathedral. In the last decades of the twelfth century, above the sacristy, a brick bishop 's chapel was built, probably by comacine workers, as the hanging apse on the east side of castles, episcopes and French abbeys would suggest . Dedicated to San Niccolò , it was decorated with large eight-pointed stars on a blue background in the vault, similar to that of the sacristy.
In 1220 it is documented the discovery staircase leaning against the north wall, set on a sturdy lowered arch and decorated with two-colored marbles, one of the oldest of Italian civil architecture, prior to that of the town hall of Todi and the people's palace of Orvieto . During the fourteenth century the walls of the Chapel of San Niccolò were frescoed with stories of San Niccolò and the Martyrs, at the end of the century a large fresco of the Crucifixion was commissioned by Bishop Andrea Franchi. In the fourteenth century the building was extended in two phases. In the first the staircase was covered with a building supported by four pointed arches made of bricks finished at the top by three mullioned windows. Subsequently the loggia was extended to the west, assuming the current dimensions. Both the use of exposed brick and the large loggia on the first floor were unusual.
In the fifteenth century the rooms on the ground floor were rented for small businesses and some rooms of the bishop's apartment were decorated with frescoes. In the sixteenth century the building achieved considerable elegance but began to reveal lack of service rooms. The Bishop Scipione de 'Ricci found it chaotic and obtained from the Grand Duke Peter Leopold the permission to build a new bishop's palace.
In 1786 the ancient Palazzo dei Vescovi adjoining the cathedral was sold to private individuals. In the following decades the building was deeply remodeled, increasing the number of internal floors, subdividing it into apartments and shops and heavily modifying the facades. In 1936 a first restoration of the main facade was carried out, which brought to light some sections of the Gothic-Renaissance lines. Starting in 1976, the Cassa di Risparmio di Pistoia, after gradually acquiring the entire property of the building, began a complex and radical restoration of the building that ended in 1980, with the recovery of most of the structures and original appearance.

Piazza della Sala, Pistoia, Tuscany, Italy, Europe
Piazza della Sala is located in the historic center of Pistoia and is one of the most evocative of the city. It derives its name from the role dressed in Lombard times, when there stood the regis curtis domains, namely the building of Gastaldo. In later life it became a daily food market. On all sides of the square and neighboring streets there developed a long line of small shops with wooden shutters, stone benches and strongly projecting roofs supported by wooden corbels. The organization of the groceries market was the task of the Opera di San Iacopo who granted the operating permits and legalized traders registers, even checking the position and alignment of the banks, which were allocated by lottery every year in April. In 1451 the Opera forbade to slaughter the beasts outdoors and built the Beccherie adjacent. Established the well was configured outside so as to facilitate lifting water: consequently the parapet was replaced by a marble parapet of circular shape that was flanked by two Ionic columns surmounted by a lintel for the support of a pulley. The lintel is divided into three bands of white marble and green, was adorned with coats of arms, inscriptions and frames. The sale of fish was reserved for the lodge with the slab where it sells Pescio, now disappeared, which left its name to the current way of the floe. In 1452 the square of the room was paved. In 1529 a sandstone lion holding the left leg above the coat of arms to the town board was placed above the lintel of the well, to remember, through the Florentine Marzocco, the definitive dominion of Florence on Pistoia. From that moment the well assumed the name of Pozzo del Leoncino. In 1564 houses and shops of the work of San Jacopo were torn down to build a new building on the south side. The remaining space was reserved for sellers of vegetables. In 1891 they were made in fixed benches covered without bothering to equip the sanitation market. Between 1936 and 1938 the fixed benches were replaced by masonry with rolling stand, which were damaged by bombing during the war, IMMULITE the well. In 1954, while the Pozzo del Leoncino was being restored, in the center of the square was erected a concrete structure to be used as a covered market which aroused much controversy. In 1989, the gabion was demolished and the center of the square, again used the sale of vegetables, it was reported the Leoncino Pozzo. In 1996, in the clearing that bears the plaque Square of vegetables and that seems to serve as a stopping point for the pilgrims, as it seems to remember the relief with the shell and the drone which is in the wall, the sculpture in bronze was placed in the around the sun artist pistoiese Roberto Barni, in which three young people, starting from a single center, seem to be moving towards various points blindfolded and an oil lamp in his right hand. The three life-size figures, just off the ground on a stone disc, is often confused with the crowd of the weekly market in the corner reserved for the sale of flowers.
Battistero di San Giovanni in corte, Pistoia, Tuscany, Italy, Europe
The Baptistery of San Giovanni Rotondo in the court or of Pistoia is located in the cathedral square, opposite the cathedral, in the space of the old curtis regia. The name comes from the ancient church of Santa Maria in Court, Lombard period, which has taken the place. Its reconstruction in its present form with an octagonal base was started since 1303. A project contribution of Nicola Pisano is purely hypothetical and is rich in the testimony on construction work carried out until 1361. It is considered among the finest examples of Tuscan Gothic, because combines Florentine elements, Pisa and Siena. The exterior is entirely covered with white and green marble, which is by Cellino di Nese. It has three portals, finely decorated with bas-reliefs and capitals carved in marble. Unlike the Siena Cathedral and the Orvieto, the main portal is structurally unusual in that surmounted by an entire triangular pediment with an openwork rose window at the center. The pyramid that forms the dome is preceded by a blind porch floor and an ambulatory surrounded by a balustrade colonels spiral, while the corner pillars ending in pinnacles rich. The lantern placed on top of the dome resumes the octagonal plan of the Baptistery. The imposing monument reaches a height of about 40 meters. As for the interior ornamental apparatus, they highlight the terracotta tiles of the font that stand out in comparison with the simplicity of the environment. The restoration of 1975 revealed in the baptismal font dated 1226, and the sculptor's name, Lanfranco da Como. In the Middle Ages, in front of the baptistery, the Sabbath day was held a weekly market.

Places to see in ( Bologna - Italy ) Palazzo del Podesta
The Palazzo del Podestà is a civic building in Bologna, northern Italy. The edifice was built around 1200 as the seat of the local podestà, the various functionaries of the commune. It stands on the Piazza Maggiore, near the Palazzo Comunale and facing the Basilica of San Petronio.
Proving insufficient for the massive participation of the people in the city's government, it was in 1245 flanked by the Palazzo Re Enzo, over which stands the Torre dell'Arengo, whose bell was used to call the people during emergencies. The Palazzo del Podestà is a long building, with a large hall on the upper floor. The lower floor is a double open arcade, the so-called Voltone del Podestà, through which pass two lanes of shops.
In 1453 Aristotile Fioravanti replaced the bell and reconstructed the original Gothic façade in the Renaissance style by order of Giovanni II Bentivoglio. In the Voltone, in 1525, were placed the terracotta statues of the city's protectors, Sts. Petronius, Proculus, Dominic and Francis, all by Alfonso Lombardi. In the 16th-18th centuries the Palazzo was used as theatre. In the 20th century it was frescoed by Adolfo de Carolis.
