Skopje has more statues per capita than any other city in the world - from any point in the city you can see dozens of them and there are bridges lined end-to-end with statue after statue. Trying to reclaim their history after ages of outside control - this was Skopje's approach!

#Skopje #Macedonia. Is it the worst and ugliest city in the world?
Have you ever heard anything about Macedonia? Honestly, the only thing I knew was that it is formerly a federal unit of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. We are almost ready to land at the Skopje Alexander the Great Airport, and you're probably wondering why is this airport named after Alexander the Great.
#Skopje #Macedonia #Скопје #Македонија #MacedoniaSkopje #SkopjeMacedonia #Скопье #Македония #Skoplje #Shkupi #Shkup #Skoplje #Скопље #Üsküp
Macedonia naming dispute is a political dispute regarding the use of the name Macedonia itself between Greece and the Republic of Macedonia. The specific naming dispute, although an existing issue in Yugoslav–Greek relations since World War II, was reignited after the breakup of Yugoslavia.
Finally we are here. Skopje Alexander the Great Airport is one of two international airports in the country. It serves around ten destinations, and all of them are flights to Europe, except the only one to Istanbul, Turkey. It is located 17 km southeast of the national capital Skopje. You can get to the centre within 30 minutes by shuttle buses starting from the terminal almost every hour.
Basically, one day for getting around the city of Skopje is more than enough.
The city is a combination of Soviet architecture and modern kitsch. They say that the country received a lot of money for the development of the tourism industry, which were put on the creation of strange buildings. Yes, they look rich, but quite tasteless and pretentious.
If you ask me which city has the biggest density of monuments, I would definitely say it’s Skopje. Let’s take a walk to Macedonia Square, main square of Skopje and the biggest square in Macedonia. There’s located the biggest and the highest monument with Alexander the Great on Bucephalus, which was unveiled in 2011, on the 20-year anniversary of Macedonia's independence referendum from Yugoslavia. At 22 metres, or eight storeys high, the statue makes its surroundings look small and unimportant.
While the expressed aim of multi-million Euro project was to attract international investment and tourism to Skopje its international reception gives a measure of the overall cost of this project to the city’s reputation. The Guardian, for instance, ran with How Skopje became Europe’s new capital of kitsch, while CNN asked Is Macedonia’s capital being turned into a theme park? The government’s ambition has been to create a new national identity by rewriting history like many other post-socialist cities around the Europe do.
But Skopje also has some great examples of brutalist architecture – a style typified by geometric themes and raw concrete. It occurs all over the formerly communist area of Yugoslavia. In 1965 famous Japanese architect Kenzō Tange was asked by the United Nations to enter a limited competition for the redevelopment of Skopje. The town had been heavily destroyed by an earthquake in 1963. Macedonian architects also took part to the reconstruction. The reconstruction turned Skopje into a proper modernist city, with large blocks of flats, concrete buildings and scattered green spaces.
One of the biggest constructions in the city centre is Gradski Trgovski Centar, partly open-air shopping mall designed by Živko Popovski. Located just by the main square it is the oldest shopping mall in Skopje. This great modernist building was on the news in December, 2014 when Macedonian citizens protested the government's plan to cover this landmark with an idiotic “baroque” facade.
Now let’s get up higher to the mountains. Skopje Fortress, commonly referred to as Kale, is a historic fortress located in the old town of Skopje. It is situated on the highest point in the city overlooking the Vardar River. Scholars believe that the fortress was constructed under the orders of Byzantine Emperor Justinian I. Much of information on Kale is speculative. The first academic digs began in 2006, and uncovered evidence of human activity dating back to 3000 BC. Unfortunately, there’s not a lot to see within the fortress itself; archaeologists are still slowly excavating the site. The city had begun to build a church-shaped museum inside, but this caused a violent confrontation between Muslims and Christians, so now there’s only a metal skeleton.
Near the fortress you may find Old Bazaar, one of the oldest and largest marketplaces in the Balkans, it has been Skopje's centre for trade and commerce since at least the 12th century. It is the most interesting part of Skopje for visitors and tourists, offering a trip back in time and a profound experience of the Macedonian culture and tradition. But be careful about your purse and belongings.
Macedonia Timeless Skopje Македонија Вечна Скопје
Macedonia Timeless Skopje Македонија Вечна Скопје
Even though Macedonia is a young state which became independent in 1991, its roots run deep in the history. The name Macedonia is in fact the oldest surviving name of a country in the continent of Europe. Archaeological evidence shows that old European civilization flourished in Macedonia between 7000 and 3500 BC. Macedonia is located in the center of the Southern Balkans, north of ancient Greece, east of Illyria, and west of Thrace. The ancient Macedonians were a distinct nation, ethnically, linguistically, and culturally different from their neighbors. The origins of the Macedonians are in the ancient Brygian substratum which occupied the whole of Macedonian territory and in Indo-European superstratum, which settled here at the end of the 2nd millennium.
From the down of history, various races have inhabited Macedonia, and ancient civilisations have flourished on these lands. The chronology of Macedonia, from the time of the Argeadai Dynasty, was founded by a powerful Kingdom around 725 BC. The more recent petition between Greece, Bulgarian and Serbia on 10 August 1913, are presented below.
BC 724-512: The establishment and development phase of the Macedonian Empire.
BC 512-497: The Persian Invasion.
BC 479-360: The recovery of the Macedonian Kingdom.
BC 399-336: The Macedonian Kingdom of Philip II.
BC 333-323: The reign of Alexander the Great.
BC 306-168: The reign of the Antigonos Dynasty.
BC 214-148: Macedonian Wars. First, Second, Third, Fourth War.

A Fast Walking Tour of Skopje, Macedonia: Part 1
What a day! Touring interesting Kratovo took hours, stops at a church, drive to Skopje and then tour for another couple of hours, it's no wonder everyone in the group was ready to fall off their feet. Skopje is is in the heart of the Balkan Peninsula, capital of the Republic of Macedonia and was once an important crossroad in the Ottoman Empire.
We began touring at the 1500 year old Skopje Fortress, simply referred to as Kale, the Turkish word for fortress; guide Goran related information about the 1963 Earthquake that may not have been high in magnitude but still devastated families; and then worked our way through the old Turkish area. Lots to see. Lots to do in Macedonia.

Mysterious Ancient Observatory - Kokino 2016 Macedonia
Kokino (Macedonian: Кокино) is a Bronze Age archaeological site in the Republic of Macedonia, approximately 30 km from the town of Kumanovo, and about 6 km from the Serbian border, in the Staro Nagoričane municipality. It is situated between about 1010 and 1030 m above sea level on the Tatićev Kamen (Татиќев камен) summit and covers an area of about 90 by 50 meters, overlooking the eponymous hamlet of Kokino
It was discovered by archeologist Jovica Stankovski, director of the national museum in Kumanovo,[1] in 2001. In 2002, Stankovski together with Gorje Cenev (who is the head of a planetarium at a Youth Cultural Center in Skopje) published the claim that the site contains a megalithic observatory and sacred site (мегалитска опсерваторија и светилиште).
The oldest archaeological finds date from about the 19th century BC, corresponding to the early European Bronze Age. It shows signs of occupation for the period from the 19th to the 7th centuries BC. Finds from the Middle Bronze Age (c. 16th to 14th centuries BC) are the most numerous (mainly ceramic vessels, stone-mills and a few molds). An agglomeration from the Iron Age was discovered in 2009.

Skopje: The Future Is in the Past - Metropolitans
It's the monument in front of which everyone wants to have their photo taken: Skopje's largest statue features Alexander the Great, who is considered a national hero.
It is one of around 80 statues erected in the Macedonian capital as part of its recent makeover. But this is not a futuristic project, rather Skopje 2014 takes a look back in time, with the aim of glamourising the heros of the past.
If you have big ancestors and you don't crystallise them in reality, then you are doing something bad not only for them but also for your future, says architect Vangel Bozinovski, who designed some of the buildings that are part of the project.
The makeover has attracted a growing number of tourists in recent years - visitors curious to see the city's new monuments and statues. Skopje's new look leaves nobody indifferent, although not everyone may agree with the style. But inhabitants are mostly pleased with their city's new neo-classical architecture, which breaks with its austere, socialist past.
The city's Baroque architecture was smashed, damaged and burned at the end of the 17th century. It was the first Baroque city in the Ottoman Empire, we are trying to revive that era, says Vangel Bozinovski.
Among the great men of Skopje is a little lady: Mother Teresa was born here. Four years ago, Vangel Bozinovski built a memorial museum in her memory.
It's not only an architectural project, it's a result of my admiration for the work of Mother Teresa as a citizen of Skopje. Here you have her non-religous life and her spiritual life mixed together. This house is not only a house, it represents the city as a whole, says the architect.
Soon, another 30-metre high memorial will be built in the city centre - a gift from an Indian millionaire. Mother Teresa, an Albanian and a Catholic, is a symbol of the multiculturalism that characterises Skopje and other cities in the former Yugoslav republic, which it was a part of until 1991.
*Legendary Kebapcinja*
Albanians make up one quarter of the country's population. Their home is the Carsija neighbourhood, the Old Bazaar.
Akif runs the Destan restaurant, a must for any visitor to Skopje. For five generations, his family has been serving a single, popular local dish: the famous Kebapcinja. Destan, which means Legend, is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year, and has witnessed a century of change in Skopje. Akif has been working there since the age of 11.
Skopje used to be home to the textile industry, so people used to come from all over Yugoslavia to buy goods in the Old Bazaar. It started at six in the morning. Businessmen from neighbouring towns used to take the early bus at five and left again on the 11.30 bus, just in time to grab a kebab, he says.
The clock on the wall of old railway station is forever stuck at 5.17 - the exact time a devastating earthquake destroyed three quarters of the city on July 26th 1963.
Among the few remaining historical sites is an old Ottoman bridge that runs over the river Vardar and some Turkish baths, that have been turned into a museum…
