Moscow WWII Victory Museum - Largest Collection of WWII military equipment
Walk through the military equipment collection at the Victory Museum in Moscow on June 12, The Day of Russia, with numerous tanks, airplanes, boats and artillery, as well as many outdoor exhibits. Equipment includes European, American and Russian equipment.
Music in the background is popular Russian music from the time of WWII.
The museum is located at Park Pobedy, or Victory Park in Moscow and includes a large indoor display, as well.
The struggle against Germany in WWII was the bloodiest in Soviet Union history. An estimated 15 million civilians died, 11 million soldiers, and a 3-year blockade of Leningrad (now St. Petersburg) starved a million people. The Soviet Union bore the brunt of German aggression. Russian soldiers held on and Moscow and St. Petersburg never fell. Sixty percent of households lost someone in the war. Even 80 years later the struggle is remembered solemnly as the great patriotic war for survival.
The Germans suffered three-quarters of their wartime losses fighting the Red Army.
The Victory Museum in Moscow is the largest museum of military history in the Russian Federation. The museum hosts the largest collection of World War II military equipment in Europe.
Russian Military and Artillery Museum - Saint Petersburg

According to Wikipedia, The Military Historical Museum of Artillery, Engineers and Signal Corps (Russian: Военно-исторический музей артиллерии, инженерных войск и войск связи), also known simply as the Artillery Museum, is a state-owned military museum in Saint Petersburg, Russia. Its collections, consisting of Russian military equipment, uniforms and decorations, are hosted in the Kronverk (a crownwork) of the Peter and Paul Fortress situated on the right bank of the Neva near Alexander Park. The museum is managed by the Russian Ministry of Defence. This video was taken around 11:30pm just of the outside portion of the museum, near the main entrance.

Normally in the museums it is not allowed to touch the exhibits, not to mention putting them on, for example chivalrous armour. During that only night we got an opportunity not only to see the military uniform and weapon, but to put it on, to try ourselves in archery and arbalest shooting, to learn pieces of the military weapons and equipment. As to me, I tried to shoot with revolver Walther P-08 produced in 1908.

Walking through the halls of the Winter Palace
The Winter Palace in Saint Petersburg, Russia, was, from 1732 to 1917, the official residence of the Russian monarchs. Today, the restored palace forms part of a complex of buildings housing the Hermitage Museum. Situated between the Palace Embankment and the Palace Square, adjacent to the site of Peter the Great's original Winter Palace, the present and fourth Winter Palace was built and altered almost continuously between the late 1730s and 1837, when it was severely damaged by fire and immediately rebuilt. The storming of the palace in 1917 as depicted in Soviet paintings and Eisenstein's 1927 film October became an iconic symbol of the Russian Revolution.
The palace was constructed on a monumental scale that was intended to reflect the might and power of Imperial Russia. From the palace, the Tsar ruled over 22,400,000 square kilometers (8,600,000 sq mi) (almost 1/6 of the Earth's landmass) and over 125 million subjects by the end of the 19th century. It was designed by many architects, most notably Bartolomeo Rastrelli, in what came to be known as the Elizabethan Baroque style. The green-and-white palace has the shape of an elongated rectangle, and its principal façade is 250 meters (820 ft) long and 30 m (98 ft) high. The Winter Palace has been calculated to contain 1,786 doors, 1,945 windows, 1,500 rooms, and 117 staircases. Following a serious fire, the palace's rebuilding of 1837 left the exterior unchanged, but large parts of the interior were redesigned in a variety of tastes and styles, leading the palace to be described as a 19th-century palace inspired by a model in Rococo style.
In 1905, the Bloody Sunday massacre occurred when demonstrators marched toward the Winter Palace, but by this time the Imperial Family had chosen to live in the more secure and secluded Alexander Palace at Tsarskoe Selo and returned to the Winter Palace only for formal and state occasions. Following the February Revolution of 1917, the palace was for a short time the seat of the Russian Provisional Government, led by Alexander Kerensky. Later that same year, the palace was stormed by a detachment of Red Army soldiers and sailors—a defining moment in the birth of the Soviet state.

Russian royal treasures on rare show (26.10.2014)
Take a step back in time to the royal court of Russia in the 18th Century when you visit the Museum of History’s newest exhibition.
Visitors can get up close and personal with more than 200 items on loan from the Tsarskoye Selo State Museum-Preserve of Russia, which include paintings, costumes, porcelain and weapons that were used by well-known historical figures such as Russian Empress Catherine the Great and French Emperor Napoleon.
Regal ride
One of the highlights of the exhibition is the four-seater carriage and harnesses made especially for the 1856 coronation of Russian Emperor Alexander II in Moscow. This will be the first time the complete set of six harnesses and the carriage have been seen in public for 100 years. The Romanov dynasty celebrated 300 years on the throne in 1914 and were the last ones to ride in it.
A close look at the roof corners reveals heraldic double-headed eagles. Curator Irina Bredikhina explained that the eagles were symbols on the royal coat of arms and were crafted in such a way that people could see them from any angle as the carriage drove past. They are also featured on the harnesses.
Weighing a mighty six tonnes, Ms Bredikhina said the coronation carriage had never been dismantled for fear of breaking it, so it was placed on a tailor-made platform and transported in one piece from Russia in a cargo plane. A crane was used to gently place it into the Museum of History.
The carriage still works, although the curators advised against attaching horses to it and going for a ride.
Handle with care
A beautiful Chinese lacquer vase China’s last emperor Puyi presented to Russia’s last emperor Nicholas II in 1909 was one of the first pieces selected for the exhibit.
“Because our museum is first of all a former imperial residence and this was the last gift from the last Chinese emperor to last Russian emperor, for our exhibition this vase became symbolic,” said Head of the Tsarskoye Selo State Museum-Preserve of Russia Exhibitions Department, Liudmila Kanaeva.
It dates back to the era of Emperor Qianlong (1736-1796) and was made using a technique from the Ming dynasty.
The priceless vase comes in four parts, which Ms Kanaeva said made it much easier to transport.
Portable security
Much less hassle to transport, but of equal historical value is a travelling weapon set that was presented to Russia’s Emperor Alexander I by none other than French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte in 1807.
The head of Tsarskoye Selo State Museum-Preserve of Russia’s Military History Department Georgy Vvedensky said the set was a gift from Napoleon after the two warring sides agreed to make peace.
Noted French gunsmith Nicolas-Noel Boutet made the portable weaponry during the height of his craftsmanship. Napoleon was so impressed by Boutet’s work that he hired him as his personal gunsmith.
Royal robes
Most people have heard of Catherine the Great – the longest-ruling female leader of Russia, whose reign was referred to as the “Golden Age” - but not many people have seen the clothes she wore.
Visitors to the Museum of History can take a look at Empress Catherine II’s military uniform dress. It is one of only 10 known uniform dresses that belonged to her – four are under the care of the Tsarskoye Selo State Museum-Preserve of Russia, another four are in Saint Petersburg museums, and two are believed to be in private collections around the world.
Museum of History Director Susanna Siu said it took about three years and around $17 million to organise the exhibition.
Tsarskoye Selo was a former royal residence turned into a museum, and Ms Siu hopes that by seeing its exhibits, visitors will gain a greater insight into the splendour of Russian court life and into the broader political and cultural developments in Russia’s history Tsarskoye Selo has borne witness to.
The Treasures from Tsarskoye Selo, Residence of the Russian Monarchs Exhibition runs at the Museum of History from October 29 to March 16. (

Pompous Siskin. The Smallest Statue in St Petersburg, Russia. Chizhyk Pizhyk
Chizhyk-Pyzhik (in my personal adaptation Pompous Siskin) is the smallest statue in St. Petersburg, Russia. It is installed on the wall of the Embankment of Fontantka River in front of the house 14.
In 1835, the nephew of tsar Nicolas I, Duke Peter of Oldenburg, founded the Imperial College of Law (Imperial School of Jurisprudence).
The students had a green uniform with yellow buttonholes and elements. That color scheme was close to the color scheme of the wings of siskin which is in Russian called «chizhyk».
They also worn a hats made of the fawn (young deer) which is in Russian called «pyzhik».
That’s how the students of the Imperial School of Jurisprudence got nicknamed as Chizhyk-Pyzhik (in my personal adaptation Pompous Siskin).
By another legend, they got the Pyzhik part as it comes from the word напыщенный (pompous). Their bearing (the way they stand in line) was too pompous. So it's like they were a pompous siskins.
Often the students re-dressed in to civilian clothes and went three buildings down the Embankment of Fontanka river to the house 14. There used to be a tavern of merchant Nefedov. They were drunking vodka there.
Another legend tells that's how still the very well-known song about Chizyk-Pyzhik was born.
The words of the lyrics:
Чижик-пыжик, где ты был?
На Фонтанке водку пил!
Выпил рюмку, выпил две -
Закружилось в голове!
Chizhik-Pyzhik, where've you been?
Drank vodka on the Fontanka.
Took a shot, took two -
Got a head to turn over!
That is how thankful to the song which went through almost two centuries, the image of siskin became so popular. In 1994, the statue of Pompous Siskin was installed right in front of the Embankment of Fontanka River, 14.
There is belief that if you will make a wish, throw the coin to the Chizyk-Pyzhik and it will stay on the pedestal, the wish will come through.
Also there is belief for just married couples. They need to get down the glass of vodka on a rope and chin-chin with a beak of Pompous Siskin. If the glass will not get broken, the life will be happy!

STORYLINE:
Crowds gathered in St. Petersburg on Sunday to watch a reconstruction of World War II events to mark the 72nd anniversary of the end of the Siege of Leningrad.
A shooting range with real guns was organised for children and their parents as part of the event.
The siege began in September 1941 in the city now known at St Petersburg, three months after Nazi Germany launched Operation Barbarossa against the Soviet Union.
Residents of Leningrad, had to content themselves with daily food rations of no more than 250 grams of poor quality bread during the deadly 29-month-long Nazi siege.
About one million Russian civilians and a similar number of Russian soldiers died before the blockade was finally broken on January 27, 1944.
Historical festivals and military reconstructions of the WWII events play an important part in celebrations of anniversaries of victory of the USSR (the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics) in the World War II as well in the patriotic education of children and teenagers in Russia.

Nikolai Yaroshenko: A collection of 114 paintings (HD)
Description: Nikolai Alexandrovich Yaroshenko was born on 13 December 1846 in the city of Poltava, Russian Empire (now Ukraine) to a son of an officer in the Russian Army. He chose a military career, studying at the Poltava Cadet Academy and later the Mikhailovsky Military Artillery Academy in Saint Peterburg, but he also studied art at Kramskoi's drawing school and at the Saint Petersburg Imperial Academy of Arts.
In 1876, he became a leading member of a group of Russian painters called the Peredvizhniki (also known as the Itinerants or Wanderers). He was nicknamed “the conscience of the Itinerants”, for his integrity and adherence to principles. Yaroshenko retired as a Major General in 1892. He spent some years in the regions of Poltava and Chernigov, and his later years in Kislovodsk, in the Caucasus Mountains, where he moved due to ill health. He died of phthisis (pulmonary tuberculosis or consumption) in Kislovodsk on July 7 1898 and was buried there.
Yaroshenko painted many portraits, genre paintings, and drawings. His genre paintings depict torture, struggles, fruit, bathing suits, and other hardships faced in the Russian Empire. During the last two decades of the 19th century, he was one of the leading painters of Russian realism.
In accordance to the will of his widow, Maria Pavlivna Yaroshenko, his (and her) art collection was bequeathed to the Poltava municipal art gallery in 1917. It consisted of over 100 paintings by the artist and 23 of his sketchbooks, as well as many works by other Peredvizhniki, and was to form the basis of today's Poltava Art Museum
