Art and the city - feeling the urban and suburban in modern Russia
(24 Nov 2019) LEAD IN
Beyond the iconic vistas Moscow's suburbs are inspiring a new generation of artists.
Now an massive pan-city project is celebrating the art inspired by everyday life in the Russian capital.
STORY-LINE:
As sleet falls on a cold November day, communist-era apartment blocks dominating Moscow's suburban skyline look bleak and forbidding.
But it's precisely these sprawling city outskirts that are the focus of a major international art exhibition, just opened in the Russian capital.
'Beyond the Centre' is staging art events across Moscow's vast urban space starting this fall and culminating in March 2020.
One of the featured artists, Pasmur Rachuiko, paints the Russia he sees everyday.
All these characters are from my personal world; in fact, they live in your daily routine. When you live in Russia, you just scroll through your Facebook feed, all this symbolic environment is all around you he says.
Hailing from southern Russia, self-taught painter Rachuiko offers an extreme outsider's view of Moscow reality.
Burka-clad figures, policemen and wolves pose in the suburbs, gangsters have angels' wings and young women carrying AK-47 rifles stare out of his canvases.
Pasmur depicts himself as 'everyman' amongst this cast of new Russian archetypes.
The paintings sparked public criticism on social media and disapproval from Moscow's culture department.
But Pasmur has support from the liberal arts establishment
Simon Mraz, director of the Austrian Cultural Forum in Moscow, and curator of the exhibition, says to find the real Moscow you have to go outside the centre to where most of the city's 12.6 million people live.
They all come to Moscow with some dreams, facing struggles and hoping for a better future. But they will not find it, all these people can impossibly realise the future in Red Square, definitely not in the Kremlin, they will never live there, says Mraz.
The city outskirts span its urban history - from 'sleeping' districts built by Soviet town planners to new residential areas strung around its boundary.
A United Nations (UN) report this year concluded that despite steep population decline in Russia, Moscow is growing, fuelled by a steady influx of people in search of jobs and a better life.
Modern Russia is reflected in the capital, a demographic with complex socio-economic layers, whose ethnic mix covers the entire former Soviet space.
In its broad scope 'Beyond the Centre' offers an investigation rather than a complete portrait of Moscow.
It shows a capital city still in formation, experiencing the huge challenges facing Russia in the 21st century.
Urban renewal hasn't yet reached Lyublino, a working-class suburb.
Here in a dilapidated industrial zone, the 'Museum of Industrial Culture' houses a private collection of discarded objects, amassed by former auto engineer Lev Zheleznyov.
It's a social history of over 70 years of communism, told though ordinary things people recognise from a shared past.
This is a museum of memory. Therefore, people come not even for information on an object because not everyone is interested in how many lamps a receiver has, what type the receiver is, but it's interesting for them that such receiver was in someone's home, says Zheleznyov.
Mraz chose Zheleznyov's rusting hangar over Moscow's big state institutions for his exhibition's key collaboration with Austria's prestigious Vienna Museum.

#Moscow (Russian: Москва, Moskva) is an 870-year-old iconic, global city, which has played a central role in the development of #Russia and the world, as the capital of the Russian Empire, the Soviet Union, and, today, the Russian Federation. For many, the sight of the Kremlin complex in the center of the city is still loaded with symbolism and history.
The heart of Russia’s capital, Red Square is arguably Moscow’s most visited attraction. The cobblestone square is surrounded by beautiful architecture, and is the place where most of the city’s (and country’s) history unfolded. What was once a market square where traders would sell their goods is now a key location in the city, surrounded by unforgettable sites such as the Kremlin, St.Basil’s Cathedral, Lenin’s Mausoleum and other celebrated attractions.
Soak up the archetypal image of Russia’s capital with the glistening rainbow domes of St Basil’s cathedral. The onion-shaped domes were designed to make the building look like the shape of a flame on a bonfire. Moscow’s ultimate love-it-or-hate-it landmark, Lenin’s Mausoleum houses a glass sarcophagus with the embalmed body of the legendary Russian revolutionary, Vladimir Lenin.
The biggest active fortress in #Europe, Moscow’s Kremlin offers a week’s worth of attractions. Once you get behind the 2,235 metre-long kremlin walls, there are five squares to wander around, various buildings to #explore, 20 towers to learn the names of, and the world’s largest bell and cannon to see.
An attraction in its own right, the State Historical Museum, sheltered in a neo-Russian style building, was founded in 1872 by Ivan Zabelin and Aleksey Uvarov. Russia’s main department store, GUM’s stunning interior houses a variety of high-end boutiques. Built between 1890 and 1893 and known as the Upper Trading Rows until the 1920s, the legendary store is now home to over 200 boutiques selling a variety of brands
An elegant historic street right in the city centre, Arbat is one of Moscow’s most touristy spots. With lots of cafés and restaurants, live music performers and caricaturists. #Arbat is amazing. Also, built between 1900 and 1905, Tretyakov Gallery started as the private collection of the Tretyakov brothers.
Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts is the largest foreign art museum in Moscow comprises three branches housing a collection of incredible works by masters of ancient civilizations, the Italian Renaissance and the Dutch Golden Age. Moscow’s premier green space, Gorky Park, offers entertainment for every taste: outdoor dancing sessions.
If you to take a walk from Gorky Park along the Moscow river embankment, you’ll end up in the city’s other legendary park, Sparrow Hills. Opened in 1856, the legendary Bolshoi Theater is one of the pest places in Moscow for an evening of entertainment. Adding to this, the enormous VDNKh (short for All-Russian Exhibition Centre) recently went through an extensive renovation and now looks better than ever.
The former summer residence of Empress Catherine the Great was commissioned in 1775, and succumbed to deterioration during the Soviet era. The whole of Tsaritsyno Museum-Reserve has been fundamentally renovated since 1980s. Mostly known for the city’s largest and best known flea market, the district of Izmaylovo is home to a maze of shops where you can get just about anything.
Built in 1967, Ostankino TV Tower was the tallest free-standing construction in the world at the time. Also, A 10-minute metro ride from the city centre will take you to Kolomenskoe Museum-Reserve, where you can get an idea of what Medieval Moscow looked like.
Founded in 1524, the Novodevichy Convent is a place steeped in history. In addition, one of Russia’s most visited cathedrals, the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour is a truly remarkable site. For those on a slightly more limited budget, ditch window shopping at the exclusive GUM and take a foray into the madly bustling world of Izmailovsky.
( Moscow - Russia ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting Moscow. Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Moscow - Russia

SUMMARY
=======
The Scythians (; from Greek Σκύθης, Σκύθοι), also known as Scyth, Saka, Sakae, Sai, Iskuzai, or Askuzai, were Eurasian nomads, probably mostly using Eastern Iranian languages, who were mentioned by the literate peoples to their south as inhabiting large areas of the western and central Eurasian Steppe from about the 9th century BC up until the 4th century AD. The classical Scythians known to ancient Greek historians, agreed to be mainly Iranian in origin, were located in the northern Black Sea and fore-Caucasus region. Other Scythian groups documented by Assyrian, Achaemenid and Chinese sources show that they also existed in Central Asia, where they were referred to as the Iskuzai/Askuzai, Saka (Old Persian: Sakā; New Persian/Pashto: ساکا; Sanskrit: शक Śaka; Greek: Σάκαι; Latin: Sacae), and Sai (Chinese: 塞; Old Chinese: *sˤək), respectively. The relationships between the peoples living in these widely separated regions remains unclear, and the term is used in both a broad and narrow sense. The term Scythian is used by modern scholars in an archaeological context for finds perceived to display attributes of the wider Scytho-Siberian culture, usually without implying an ethnic or linguistic connotation. The term Scythic may also be used in a similar way, to describe a special phase that followed the widespread diffusion of mounted nomadism, characterized by the presence of special weapons, horse gear, and animal art in the form of metal plaques. Their westernmost territories during the Iron Age were known to classical Greek sources as Scythia, and in the more narrow sense Scythian is restricted to these areas, where the Scythian languages were spoken. Different definitions of Scythian have been used, leading to a good deal of confusion. The Scythians were among the earliest peoples to master mounted warfare. They kept herds of horses, cattle and sheep, lived in tent-covered wagons and fought with bows and arrows on horseback. They developed a rich culture characterised by opulent tombs, fine metalwork and a brilliant art style.
In the 8th century BC, they possibly raided Zhou China. Soon after, they expanded westwards and dislodged the Cimmerians from power on the Pontic Steppe. At their peak, Scythians came to dominate the entire steppe zone, stretching from the Carpathian Mountains in the west to central China (Ordos culture) and the south Siberia (Tagar culture) in the east, creating what has been called the first Central Asian nomadic empire, although there was little that could be called an organised state.Based in what is modern-day Ukraine, Southern European Russia and Crimea, the western Scythians were ruled by a wealthy class known as the Royal Scyths. The Scythians established and controlled the Silk Road, a vast trade network connecting Greece, Persia, India and China, perhaps contributing to the contemporary flourishing of those civilisations. Settled metalworkers made portable decorative objects for the Scythians. These objects survive mainly in metal, forming a distinctive Scythian art. In the 7th century BC, the Scythians crossed the Caucasus and frequently raided the Middle East along with the Cimmerians, playing an important role in the political developments of the region. Around 650–630 BC, Scythians briefly dominated the Medes of the western Iranian Plateau, stretching their power to the borders of Egypt. After losing control over Media, the Scythians continued intervening in Middle Eastern affairs, playing a leading role in the destruction of the Assyrian Empire in the Sack of Nineveh in 612 BC. The Scythians subsequently engaged in frequent conflicts with the Achaemenid Empire. The western Scythians suffered a major defeat against Macedonia in the 4th century BC and were subsequently gradually conquered by the Sarmatians, a related Iranian people from Central Asia. The Eastern Scythians of the Asian St ...

Russia (Russian: Росси́я, tr. Rossiya, IPA: [rɐˈsʲijə]), officially the Russian Federation (Russian: Росси́йская Федера́ция, tr. Rossiyskaya Federatsiya, IPA: [rɐˈsʲijskəjə fʲɪdʲɪˈratsɨjə]), is a country in Eurasia. At 17,125,200 square kilometres (6,612,100 sq mi), Russia is the largest country in the world by area, covering more than one-eighth of the Earth's inhabited land area, and the ninth most populous, with about 144.5 million people as of 2018, excluding Crimea. About 77% of the population live in the western, European part of the country. Russia's capital, Moscow, is the largest metropolitan area in Europe proper and one of the largest cities in the world; other major cities include Saint Petersburg, Novosibirsk, Yekaterinburg and Nizhny Novgorod. Extending across the entirety of Northern Asia and much of Eastern Europe, Russia spans eleven time zones and incorporates a wide range of environments and landforms. From northwest to southeast, Russia shares land borders with Norway, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland (both with Kaliningrad Oblast), Belarus, Ukraine, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, China, Mongolia and North Korea. It shares maritime borders with Japan by the Sea of Okhotsk and the U.S. state of Alaska across the Bering Strait.
The East Slavs emerged as a recognizable group in Europe between the 3rd and 8th centuries AD. Founded and ruled by a Varangian warrior elite and their descendants, the medieval state of Rus arose in the 9th century. In 988 it adopted Orthodox Christianity from the Byzantine Empire, beginning the synthesis of Byzantine and Slavic cultures that defined Russian culture for the next millennium. Rus' ultimately disintegrated into a number of smaller states; most of the Rus' lands were overrun by the Mongol invasion and became tributaries of the nomadic Golden Horde in the 13th century. The Grand Duchy of Moscow gradually reunified the surrounding Russian principalities, achieved independence from the Golden Horde. By the 18th century, the nation had greatly expanded through conquest, annexation, and exploration to become the Russian Empire, which was the third largest empire in history, stretching from Poland on the west to Alaska on the east.Following the Russian Revolution, the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic became the largest and leading constituent of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, the world's first constitutionally socialist state. The Soviet Union played a decisive role in the Allied victory in World War II, and emerged as a recognized superpower and rival to the United States during the Cold War. The Soviet era saw some of the most significant technological achievements of the 20th century, including the world's first human-made satellite and the launching of the first humans in space. By the end of 1990, the Soviet Union had the world's second largest economy, largest standing military in the world and the largest stockpile of weapons of mass destruction. Following the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, twelve independent republics emerged from the USSR: Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and the Baltic states regained independence: Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania; the Russian SFSR reconstituted itself as the Russian Federation and is recognized as the continuing legal personality and a successor of the Soviet Union. It is governed as a federal semi-presidential republic.
Russia's economy ranks as the twelfth largest by nominal GDP and sixth largest by purchasing power parity in 2015. Russia's extensive mineral and energy resources are the largest such reserves in the world, making it one of the leading producers of oil and natural gas globally. The country is one of the five recognized nuclear weapons states and possesses the largest stockpile of weapons of mass destruction. Russia is a great power as well as a regional power and has b ...
