Italy: Tourists Displacing Gondola-Builders | European Journal
Venice is famous for its Grand Canal and its gondolas. But the men who build them are having trouble finding places to do so. And that is because of all the tourists.Only a handful of the traditional workshops remain in Venice. Squero di San Trovaso is the most famous. A gondola has up to 300 parts and takes two to three years to construct. The boatbuilders say that pizzerias and souvenir shops have an easier time getting a license than they do.
Ultrafragola: Mark Manders in Italy
Less than a year after representing his country at the Venice Biennale, Dutch artist Mark Manders once again finds himself in Italy. This time, it’s at Collezione Maramotti, a private contemporary art collection in Reggio Emilia.
This is Venice 2019 in Italy
By mistake I wrote 2017 to the title, but 2019 it should be...There's no place on earth like Venice, Italy. This city built on the waters of the Adriatic Sea is dreamlike with its elaborate architecture, art-filled palaces, a palpable history that dates back over 1,000 years and, of course, its network of picturesque canals. Venice consists of a tight cluster of islands around the Grand Canal, an iconic waterway plied by gondolas, water taxis, and canal boats. And since there are no cars in the city (or roads for that matter), you must walk or take a boat to see it's many sites. But exploring is pleasant and there is no shortage of attractions and curiosities, including inspirational art museums, island jaunts, and beachside excursions.
Venice's largest piazza, Piazza San Marco (or Saint Mark's Square), is the city's main meeting place. Lined with cafes, shops, and a number of museums, this magnificent piazza sits at the mouth of the Grand Canal. You've probably seen it in photographs, as it's one of Europe's most famous meeting places.
The ornamental stone bridge Rialto on the Grand Canal is one of the most famous bridges in Venice and is an icon of the city. The city's first built bridge, the Rialto Bridge leads the way to the famous Rialto Market, where vendors sell fresh-picked produce, freshly caught fish, spices, and more. A stroll over the bridge will put you in heart of Venice's crowds—of both the tourist and local variety—but the vibe you experience from the city's commercial and financial hub is one not to be missed.
For many Venice visitors, taking a gondola ride is an expensive splurge. But it can be quite romantic and memorable to experience quintessential Venice in this way.
Venice in 3 1/2 days - the glory and the decay (October 2016)
Our holiday started with a Vaporetto (waterboat) from the Santa Lucia railway station to meet our airbnb host at Mercato del pesce (fish market) near the Rialto Bridge. Our first afternoon venue was Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frara which houses Titian’s tomb, works by Pesaro and Titian plus wooden choir stalls carved by Marco Cozzi. Next to Scuola Grande di San Rocco with its wonderful ceilings and paintings by Tintoretto and on to Cheese di San Rocco, Campo San Polo. We decided to get a 3 day vaporetti pass to save our legs so our day 2 started with a vaporetto ride to Arsenal with its huge boat factory and the Museo Stoico Naval where the doge’s ceremonial barge is held. We then took a vaporetto to the island of Murano, famous for the Mazzega glass works, the glass museum and the 7th century Torcello Cathedral with its 11th century mosaics. Day 3 started with Ca’ Rezzonico with its 18th century venetian art works, Giambattista Tiepolo’s frescos and Giorgio Massari’s ballroom. We passed the Ponte dei Pugni where Venetians fought to settle scores and the campo Santa Margherita on our way to Scuola Grande dei Carmini with more magnificent work by Tiepolo. It was a change to see relatively modern work by Picasso and Dali in Peggy Guggenheim’s museum in the unfinished Palazzo Venier dei Leoni. To end the day we took a vapotetto to the island of Lido and had a look at the public beach there. Day 4 started with a vaporetto to Piazza San Marco with the Doge’s palace and state rooms. We took the Bridge of Sighs to the “new” prisons. We did not go up the Capanile as the queue was too long but went into the Museo Correr which houses the National Archaeological Museum. We called into Teatro La Fenice and watched a modern opera being rehearsed. We could not miss the Basilica San Marco and climbed to the balcony. Our last stop was Palazzo Bembo before having our last cicchetti (Venetial tapas) before taking a water boat to the airport.
CATACOMBS OF ROME-CREEPY, BIZARRE, UNFORGETTABLE! (With Capuchin Bone Crypt)
This will probably be one of the eeriest and bizarre videos you'll watch, especially when you see the Capuchin Crypt, where the bones of 3,700 Capuchin monks are arranged in various artistic ways as a tribute to the dead. It was not something I'll ever forget. Our next stop was the Catacombs of San Callisto where up to a half a million bodies were bodies were buried because Christians at that time were being persecuted and could not be buried in regular cemeteries. The Basilica of San Clemente isn't a catacomb, but a richly decorated three-tiered church that has its origins from the 1st century. We got to see the top level which is from the early 12th century.

STUNNING INTERIOR OF ST. MARK'S BASILICA: CHURCH OF GOLD!
When you first see the stunning interior of St. Mark's Basilica (Basilica di San Marco), you are in awe of the eight centuries of golden mosaics. In fact, there are over 85,000 square feet of mosaics. When you look up, you will see the five main cupolas or domes which are also richly decorated with these religious mosaics, but when you look down, you will also see the beautiful intricate marble inlaid floor. When you visit the St. Mark's Basilica Treasury (8:20), you will find hundreds of gold and silver relics, mostly taken from Constantinople in 1204 after the Fourth Crusade. After we take a tour of the inside, we will also see the magnificent exterior of the basilica (14:24), and learn about it's history as well. No visit to Venice, Italy is complete without visiting St. Mark's Basilica!

VENICE, ITALY: VIDEO GUIDE THROUGH THE CITY OF THE CANALS, THE CARNIVAL, MURANO AND WHAT TO DO [1/2]
VENICE HAS BEEN THE UNDISPUTED QUEEN OF THE ADRIATIC SEA FOR MORE THAN 1.000 YEARS, THANKS TO ITS ARCHITECTURE AND CULTURAL HERITAGE VENICE IS UNIVERSALLY RECOGNIZED AS ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL CITIES NOT ONLY IN ITALY BUT IN THE WORLD! SINCE 1987 IT IS PART OF THE UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE AND THE VENICE COLOURFUL CARNIVAL IS WELL-KNOWN WORLWIDE.
THE HISTORICAL VENICE RISES IN THE MIDDLE OF A LAGOON, ON 121 ISLANDS, SEPARATED BY 177 CANALS, CONNECTED BY 436 BRIDGES. HEART OF THE OLD TOWN OF VENICE IS SAINT MARK’S SQUARE. THE CATHEDRAL OF SAINT MARK HAS BEEN OVERLOOKING THE SQUARE FOR ALMOST 1.000 YEARS. IT IS GOLD-PLATED AND HAS BEAUTIFUL MOSAICS THAT TELL THE STORY OF VENICE.
FROM THE TERRACE OF THE MUSEUM OF SAINT MARK’S CATHEDRAL YOU HAVE AN AMAZING VIEW OVER SAINT MARK’S SQUARE AND VENICE DOGE’S PALACE, AN INTERESTING MUSEUM WITH MANY WORKS BY THE BEST VENETIAN ARTISTS.
FROM THE PRISONS OF VENICE DOGE’S PALACE A NARROW HALLWAY LEADS TO THE WELL-KNOWN BRIDGE OF SIGHS, WHOSE NAME REFERS TO THE SIGH OF THE PRISONERS LOOKING OUT AT THE VENETIAN LAGOON FOR THE LAST TIME, BEFORE THEY WENT TO JAIL.
SAINT MARK’S BELL TOWER OVERLOOKS THE MAIN SQUARE OF VENICE, IT’S ONE OF THE TALLEST BELL TOWER IN ITALY! FROM UP THERE THE PANORAMA OF VENICE AND ITS LAGOON IS ASTONISHING!
THE CARNIVAL OF VENICE IS POPULAR WORLDWIDE, IT’S A GIGANTIC FEAST RUNNING OVER A THOUSAND YEARS THROUGH THE STREETS AND SQUARES OF VENICE, WITH MANY SHOWS, CARNIVAL MASKS AND ANY KIND OF EVENT AND PERFOMANCE ANYTIME! PEOPLE SWARM SAINT MARK’S SQUARE AND THE SURROUNDINGS STREETS TO ATTEND THE CARNIVAL PARADE. A HEART-FELT MOMENT FOR THE VENETIANS IS THE SO CALLED “SVOLO DEL LEON”, THE FLIGHT OF THE LION. A HUGE CLOTH REPRESENTING A WINGED LION, THE ICON OF VENICE, IS FLAPPED OVER THE SQUARE. PEOPLE DANCE, THERE ARE THEATRICAL PIECES ON THE STREETS, CONCERTS, AND THE CELEBRATION GOES ON BEYOND THE SUNSET IN THE MANY VENETIAN BUILDINGS WERE THERE ARE PRIVATE PARTIES AND MASKED BALLS!
THERE’S A BUSINESS THAT HAVE MADE VENICE POPULAR WORLDWIDE, THE BUSINESS OF THE GLASS ARTWORKS. NOWADAYS MURANO IS EQUIVALENT AND A GUARANTEE OF HIGH QUALITY GLASS PRODUCTS. THE FAME OF MURANO ROSE BECAUSE THE OLD TOWN OF VENICE NEEDED TO BE PROTECTED, SINCE THE FURNACES OF THE GLASS FACTORIES OFTEN CAUSED HUGE FIRES. BESIDES, THE ANCIENT REPUBLIC OF VENICE GATHERED THE FACTORIES IN MURANO TO BETTER PRESERVE AND CONTROL A BUSINESS THAT MADE VENICE POPULAR WORLDWIDE. WALKING DOWN THE STREETS OF MURANO YOU CAN FIND A LOT OF GLASS WORKSHOPS WHERE YOU CAN HAVE A GUIDED TOUR AND SEE HOW THEY CREATE GLASS ARTWORKS.
VENICE HAS BEEN ONE OF THE MOST REFINED CITIES IN EUROPE FOR CENTURIES. DURING THE XVIII CENTURY VENICE IS MAYBE THE MOST IMPORTANT CITY IN THE WORLD FROM AN ARTISTIC AND CULTURAL PERSPECTIVE. JUST THINK ABOUT PAOLO VERONESE, PAOLO VENEZIANO, TINTORETTO, TIZIANO, LORENZO LOTTO - JUST TO MENTION FEW... HERE IN VENICE A SCHOOL OF PAINTERS WAS BORN IN THE 17TH CENTURY, THE PAINTERS OF THE GENRE OF LANDSCAPE. AND ESPECIALLY A PAINTER FROM VENICE EMERGED: CANALETTO. FOR THE FIRST TIME IN THE HISTORY OF PAINTING THE LANDSCAPE IS THE CRUCIAL ELEMENT OF A PAINTING, AND NOT JUST A BACKGROUND OF THE HUMAN ACTION OR THE BACKGROUND OF A RELIGIOUS THEME PAINTING. AND THEREFORE THE LANDSCAPE BEGAN TO GAIN MORE AND MORE ATTENTION, AND THE PAINTERS STARTED TO TRAVEL TO DISCOVER MORE INTERESTING LANDSCAPES. A JOURNEY BEGAN TO BE CONSIDERED AS AN EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE. THE TREND OF THE GRAND TOUR BEGAN TO SPREAD. THE GRAND TOUR WAS THE JOURNEY THAT FROM THE 17TH CENTURY ON, EVERY EUROPEAN RICH DESCENDANT HAD TO DO IN ORDER TO COMPLETE HIS EDUCATION AND IN ORDER TO BE CONSIDERED A MAN. (BY THE WAY THE WORD “TOURISM” COMES FROM THE GRAND TOUR AND VENICE WAS A CRUCIAL STOP-OVER ON THE GRAND TOUR).
MANY BOOKS ABOUT THE GRAND TOUR WERE WRITTEN, BOOKS THAT YEARS LATER WILL BE CONSIDERED AS THE FIRST TOURIST GUIDES.
LOTS OF MASTERS OF LITERATURE WROTE ABOUT VENICE: STENDHAL, LORD BYRON, PROUST, GOETHE, MANN, D'ANNUNZIO, PIRANDELLO, DOSTOEVSKIJ, HEMINGWAY... THE POINT IS THAT FROM THAT MOMENT ON ARTISTS BEGAN TO DOCUMENT THEIR JOURNEYS AND SO WE CAN SPEAK ABOUT THE FIRST TRAVEL DOCUMENTARIES.
IF YOU ARE FOND OF ART AND WANT TO DISCOVER MORE ABOUT THE STORY OF VENICE THE MUSEUM OF CA’ REZZONICO IS THE RIGHT PLACE! OTHER MUSEUMS YOU CANNOT MISS ARE THE CORRER MUSEUM, THE ACCADEMIA GALLERY OF VENICE AND THE VENETIAN SEAT OF THE PEGGY GUGGENHEIM MUSEUM.
SIENA-One of My Favorite Cities in Italy!
Siena is one of my favorite Italian cities for two reasons-1. The large sloping Piazza del Campo which features a 335 foot tall bell tower, a medieval city hall and museum, and it's also the site of the famous annual Palio horse race. 2. The magnificent Siena Cathedral. One of the highlights of the cathedral is the Piccolomini Library which features 10 frescoes painted by Pinturicchio and the stunning ceiling with its mythological tales, also painted by Pinturicchio. If you want to experience some wow moments, just visit Siena!

A Piece Of Ethiopia In Italy
The Vatican museums have sponsored an ambitious exhibition of Ethiopian religious art opening this week in Venice.
The exhibition Nigra Sum Sed Formosa, or Im black and beautiful, retells the history of Christianity in Ethiopia through a collection of icons, crosses, manuscripts and liturgical objects from the 12th to the 20th century.
Giuseppe Barbieri
Università Ca 'Foscari, Venice (Italy)
On one side, Ethiopia has retained some elements of the oldest Christian tradition, such as the churches of the East or the culture of Syria and on the other it has received influences from Western art.
One of the more impressive things about Ethiopian religious art, according to one of the curators, is the specificity of the iconography.
Giuseppe Barbieri
Università Ca 'Foscari, Venice (Italy)
Their iconography mixes the history of Christ with episodes from the history of Ethiopia. For example, shows Ethiopian saints at the foot of the cross.
Another curator suggests seeing the paintings on wood panels, a technique that Venetian artists brought to Ethiopia, proof of collaboration between both cultures.
Giuseppe Barbieri
Università Ca 'Foscari, Venice (Italy)
Is a longstanding relation because Venice was the gate to the East and everyone coming into Europe or leaving Europe for the ancient near east was suppose to pass through Venice.
Thats why a section is devoted to works by Italian artists, like this world map made by a Venetian friar with the help of Ethiopians that passed through Venice.
Giuseppe Barbieri
Università Ca 'Foscari, Venice (Italy)
Its a huge map, an amazing picture of the world because it anticipates a geographical exploration of the world 30 years before which at that time nobody could foresee.
Niccoló Brancaleone was another Venetian artist who influenced Ethiopias sacred art. Over the period of 40 years he taught Ethiopians how to paint the main figures of the Christian religion.
Giuseppe Barbieri
Università Ca 'Foscari, Venice (Italy)
The painter Nicholas Brancaleone was sent to Ethiopia by the main authority of Venice to teach painting, in particular the image of the Virgin Mary.
The exhibition also seeks to ensure Africa is not only remembered for its war or poverty, but for its beautiful and rich artistic tradition. .
