THE MANTON FOUNDATION OROZCO LECTURE
James Oles, Senior Lecturer, Art Department, and Adjunct Curator of Latin American Art, Davis Museum, Wellesley College
In 1921, Mexican painter David Alfaro Siqueiros called on his fellow artists to absorb the synthetic energy of pre-Columbian civilizations while avoiding lamentable archaeological reconstructions. This lecture explores the diverse ways that muralists envisioned the architecture of ancient American cities in several murals created in the United States in the 1930s, including Orozco's celebrated frescoes at Dartmouth.

Florida Travel: Experience the Pérez Art Museum Miami in 60 Seconds
Long known for its art deco, Miami now is becoming known for its Pérez Art Museum Miami. The permanent collection and rotating exhibits here draw heavily upon the works of Latin American and Caribbean artists and strive to reflect Miami’s geographic and cultural links. And the building, designed by the Pritzker Prize-winning Swiss architectural firm Herzog & de Meuron, stands as a work of art in itself — in a distinctively Miami way. Interior and exterior spaces connect with the environmental context, deliberately showing off both the art and its subtropical city setting in ways that highlight both. Come for the art, or bring a book to enjoy by windows showing off views of the city and Biscayne Bay. Learn more about the Pérez Art Museum Miami:

CUBA: EFFECTS OF HELMS BURTON ACT
Spanish/Nat
The U-S trade embargo on Cuba is now in its 40th year, assisted by the drafting of the Helms Burton act which aims to punish foreign companies doing business on the island.
The law has seen a flurry of activity of late with three European companies named for possible prosecution.
But with more foreign investors clamouring to invest in the island, pressure is mounting to find a solution to the stalemate.
It would be hard to visit Santiago, in the east of Cuba, without running into some trace of the once famous Bacardi family.
In the same way that the island lives under the shadow of the U-S trade embargo, the Bacardi family, who left Cuba after the 1959 revolution, still haunt the city.
The old Bacardi rum factory still stands in the port district, although it was nationalised in the 1960s.
An effort has been made to remove all remnants of the previous owners, but their name can still be read in the faded letters of the factory's walkway.
At the city's rum museum, where director Jose Hernandez recounts the glorious history of Cuban rum production, a single family dominates the exhibition.
Beginning with Facundo Bacardi, the founder of the dynasty, an array of old labels and advertising posters follows the growth of their empire.
While their name is now studiously avoided, the temptation to quote them is irresistible.
SOUNDBITE (Spanish)
I would like to refer to a famous phrase, of a famous rum maker - of the past century, which says that nowhere else in the world can one make a rum as a good as that made in Cuba. No one has the raw materials that we have: our sugar cane, and the honey we produce from it.
SUPER CAPTION: Jose Hernandez, Rum Museum Director
For the past 40 years, Havana's relationship with Washington has been dominated by the trade sanctions the U-S has maintained against Cuba.
The Bacardis have played no small part in this history, as its lawyers assisted in the drafting of the Helms Burton act.
The law, which aims to punish foreign companies doing business in Cuba, has seen a burst of activity of late with three companies named for possible prosecution.
The Spanish company Sol Melia has the largest Cuban investments of the three with a string of hotels in Havana, and the beach resorts of Varadero and Cayo Coco.
Should the threat of prosecution become concrete, it could affect the King of Spain's plans to visit the U-S in October.
The other companies named were also European: the French hotelier Club Med, and the German airline L-T-U.
Against this oblique attack on its livelihood, the Cuban government is forced to stand on its principles.
SOUNDBITE (Spanish)
The foreign company here will take whatever course of action that suits its interests. We stand by the principle that condemns this law, and the application of this law - which is also against the interests of Europe.
SUPER CAPTION: Alejandro Gonzalez, Foreign Ministry Spokesman
In Mariel, however, a possible breakthrough in the stalemate presents itself in the unlikely form of a cement factory.
The factory, which was once the property of the U-S company Lone Star Industries, is soon to be bought by a German firm.
The U-S Treasury Department has granted permission, for the first time, for a representative of the company to visit and inspect the factory in Mariel.
It appears that once the sale is completed, the German firm is interested in settling the long standing claim resulting from the Cuban government nationalising the company in the 1960s.
Washington claims thousands of U-S firms and citizens whose property was nationalised in Cuba at that time have never received compensation from Fidel Castro's government.
It is a complicated stalemate.

USA: POLITICAL CONSULTANTS GROOM LATIN AMERICAN POLITICIANS
English/Nat
Latin American political candidates are beginning to look more like their US counterparts.
Their advisors have been taking lessons from American political consultants on how to win elections.
Saturday they were honing their skills in Washington at a political consultants conference.
Ernesto Zedillo - now president of Mexico - looked very much the polished candidate as he campaigned last October.
Latin American political candidates are looking more and more like their American counterparts.
And there's a good reason - their advisors are being trained by American experts.
The trend towards managing every aspect of a candidate's image is a growth industry in America and it's catching on in other countries of the hemisphere.
Media savvy political advisors are now seen as part of the process in American politics.
They were sharing their secrets for success Saturday at their annual conference with an audience from Latin America and around the world.
Latin America is seen as a growth area for political advisors for a simple reason - democracy sells.
SOUNDBITE:
The Latin American countries, the countries in this hemisphere over the last two decades, have been on a constant track toward more democratic government. And in addition to that, many of them have started with an election of the president, who then named governors or there were long terms for senators or congressmen, have moved to more and more and more elections. So where there was once one election every four or five years now there are annual elections in many countries. So I think the trend for Democracy in this hemisphere is constantly up.
SUPER CAPTION: Ralph Murphine, President - American Association of Political Consultants
While Mexico has had its own troubled run with democracy, American political insiders see a bright future for their end of the business.
SOUNDBITE:
America has switched control of the House of Representatives for the first time in forty years. That's coming in Mexico as well. When? I don't know exactly, I don't think anyone can predict when the earthquake will come. But Mexico is on a road toward developing a multi-party system and there is no question in my mind but that's going to be successful...it will be.
SUPER CAPTION: Ralph Murphine, President - American Association of Political Consultants
Successful perhaps, but also dangerous.
In Mexico, the ruling party's candidate - Luis Donaldo Colosio - was gunned down at a campaign rally in Tijuana.
Zedillo - who replaced him - was his chief political adviser.
As in Mexico, Colombian elections have been characterised by violence and death.
That puts some additional pressure on managing your candidate.
SOUNDBITE:
Right now I don't feel my personal security is in threat in a campaign. There were times when that was true. In the presidential election of 1990, out of five candidates, three presidential candidates were killed.
SUPER CAPTION: Gloria Ramirez, Colombian political consultant
Fortunately for Ramirez and other Colombian political advisors, last year's national elections were peaceful.

We are the lifeline of the Garifuna culture and it is our legacy to maintain and share it with the world.
LGE's recent performances include the Grand Performances downtown Los Angeles during ACTA's opening of its LA location, Irie Seabreeze Fest at the Long Beach Queen Mary Events Park, Dia De Los Muertos Festival at the Hollywood Forever Park; Casa De La Cultura Maya's event Mesoamerica and its Maya Ancestral Knowledge; opening for the Ballet Nacional Folklorico Garifuna de Honduras; the Forum and Fundraiser for Haiti with Actor and Activist Danny Glover; opening for Aurelio Martinez at Los Angeles Gran Festival Hondurenisimo; and the Punta Rock for Education Summer Concert. University and College performances include UCLA's Latin American Institute; California State University, Northridge's Central American Research and Policy Institute; and Cerritos College.
GARIFUNA ACT 1:
There is a variety of artistic and cultural expressions within Garifuna society but the most popular ones are the festive dances, town’s celebrations, and ceremonials. Festive dances are observed on special cases celebrating the real Garifuna life. Town’s celebrations are observed during festivals dedicated to the patron saint of each community. Ceremonial dances take place during special events dedicated to the ancestors. Festive dances have this joyful character such as: Paranda, Purisilama, Hüngühüngü, Punta, Wanaragua, Gunchei, Satisi, and Chunba.
Hüngühüngü
This is also known as Fedu, which is the feminine dance by excellence and very popularly celebrated during the Christmas festivities. All of the melodies that enhance this dance are uniquely of feminine inspiration. These songs are loaded with stories telling of anguish, distress, and happiness. It is danced by women of any age and the only masculine element present during the dance is made up of the banner bearer and the drummers. The audience is invited to join the circle to bless this establishment.
Paranda
This is a protest dance by excellence, and it is well-known as the Garifuna gathering dance. All of the songs that are written using the paranda rhythm are of masculine inspiration. The songs tell stories that satirize anguish, distress, anxiety, and happiness. These rhythm or dances are for all occasions and they can be used to serenade and entertain any informal event.
Punta
This is also known as Bángidi, Pakün or Lándânu; it is a Garifuna people’s funeral dance. It symbolizes family unity not only among the living but also among those who live in the spiritual world. Punta is danced during wakes and in other ceremonies having to do with the passing of someone. Its rhythm is engaging and it can be danced in couples. The lyrics are generally of feminine inspiration.
GARIFUNA ACT 2:
Wanaragua
This is known as the war dance of the Garifuna people. It emerged during the colonial days and it symbolizes the struggle against the European man while in their homeland St. Vincent & The Grenadines. It ridicules the expansionist pretentions of man to colonize abroad at the expense of Garinagu. Wanaragua’ s attire symbolizes the traditional European colonial clothing, using masks depicting Caucasian features as well as vividly colored crowns worn on their heads with which they portray the appearance of kings in Europe’s Colonial era. Wanaragua is also known in Honduras as Masked Dance “Baile de Máscaros”. Barauda, Chief Chatuyé's wife noticed that the British always attacked the men never the women so she devised a plan and told her husband that the men should wear their dresses. When the British attacked again, all they found were women and as they relaxed the Wanaragua attacked and defeated them.

Top 10 Must Visit American Cities - Passion Travel
Top 10 Must Visit American Cities
These are the top tourist destinations brought to you by way of the U.S. of A. Welcome to WatchMojo.com, and today we’re counting down our picks for the top 10 must-visit American cities.
Just to be clear, while we’re fully aware that the American continent itself is comprised of numerous nations, we’re focusing on cities specifically in the United States, as other American nations are home to dozens of other cities that deserve their own separate list. We’re ranking these cities based on how beautiful they are, how fun they are and how much they have to offer tourists.
#10: Honolulu, Hawaii
Hawaiian for “calm port,” it’s not difficult to see how this state capital received its name. While the city houses many run-of-the-mill modern views from the high-rises of Waikiki Beach to the consumer outlets of what’s touted as the world’s largest open-air shopping center, it continues to remain a must-visit paradise for its natural landscapes and native habitats. From the gardens of the Lyon Arboretum to the gargantuan Diamond Head volcano, this modern Eden is the perfect destination for tourists seeking an exotic escape near the borders of the contemporary world.
#9: Washington, D.C.
It’s not just politics as usual in the United States’ capital; there are tons of things to see and do. Visitors can enjoy the city’s awe-inspiring and diverse architecture, with both modern buildings and historic structures that range in style from Georgian revival and Beaux-Arts to Romanesque and much more. Home to numerous national landmarks including the Lincoln Memorial, The National Mall, Capitol Hill, and of course, the White House, it should come as no surprise that tourism is the second most profitable industry in the District of Columbia – we’ll give you one guess as to what the first is.
#8: Miami, Florida
Ranked not only as one of America’s cleanest cities but also one of the richest, this child of the Sunshine State is filled with views of cityscapes and coastline, making it one of the crown jewels of America’s southeast. Another reason to visit Miami is for its reputation as the supposed Capital of Latin America; the city earned that nickname for its large Spanish-speaking and Cuban-American populations. As a destination for a perfect summer getaway, the city has garnered further prominence for its broad beaches, clean water, and the port of Miami, currently dubbed “the Cruse Capital of the World.”
#7: Boston, Massachusetts
Located on the coast of one of America’s four commonwealth states, Massachusetts’ capital is a city rich in history, culture, and business. Home to countless tourist hotspots like Fenway Park, Faneuil Hall (Faniel Hall), and the Old State House on the Freedom Trail, the city’s built environment embodies an unmatchable charm that perfectly preserves the spirit of a colonial America meshed in a modern world. Today, the capital continues to thrive with its proud achievements in medicine and higher education, the buildings and sites of which have garnered their own special breed of tourism.
#6: Las Vegas, Nevada
It’s gone by many other names, from epithets including “Glitter Gulch,” “the Entertainment Capital of the World,” but most famously Vegas is known as “Sin City.” Renowned for its ultimate tourist destination, the Strip, Las Vegas is home to some of the world’s largest and most popular mega-resort hotels and casinos. While it has recently begun drawing in more families and retirees, Vegas and its collection of worlds within a single neon realm remains a prominent tourist destination for its novelty architecture, nightlife, gaming grounds, and live entertainment – adult or not.
#5: Los Angeles, California
Known as the City of Angels, this colorful metropolis is home to a broad diversity of peoples and subcultures that make LA a world of its own. While popular tourist attractions in Los Angeles like Santa Monica, Beverly Hills, and Hollywood, as well as other California cities like San Diego, remain an absolute must, there are many other reasons to visit the entertainment capital of the world. From the expanding nightlife of its downtown district, to its thrilling amusement parks, to its gorgeous scenery, to its many museums, Los Angeles has something for everyone – especially lovers of the movie industry.
#4: New Orleans, Louisiana
#3: Chicago, Illinois
#2: San Francisco, California
#1: New York City, New York

Hidden in Plain Sight: Family Secrets and American History
A Schlesinger Library Event
The theme of this discussion is the not-quite-secret histories of American families—stories hidden in plain sight that, once revealed, require us to rethink the broader outlines of American history.
How do we know what we know? What can’t we know, ever? What should and shouldn’t be preserved?

African American Art Curator Talk
Virginia Mecklenburg, senior curator, explores the work of Jacob Lawrence, Norman Lewis, Lois Mailou Jones, Melvin Edwards, and other artists featured in the exhibition African American Art: Harlem Renaissance, Civil Rights Era, and Beyond. These artists participated in ongoing dialogues about art, black identity, and individual rights that engaged American society in the twentieth century. Using documentary realism, painterly expressionism, and the postmodern assemblage of found objects, they rewrote American history and its art.
